Finally, Pakistan launched a full-scale crackdown against the domestic and foreign terrorists in the country after the Taliban killed more than thirty people in an attack on Karachi airport last week.  The Pakistan army has killed more than hundred terrorists so far in operations in North Waziristan where the terrorists have bases and sanctuaries.

As Rana Banerji reports in Mail Today two press releases issued by Maj Gen. Asif Saleem Bajwa, Director General, Inter- Services Public Relations ( ISPR) on June 15, 2014 confirmed that the Pakistan Army has started the long- awaited, full- fledged military operation called ‘ Zarb- e- Azb’(“ sharp & cutting” — a reference to Prophet Mohammed’s sword used in the Battles of Badr & Uhad, 623 AD), which will involve aerial strafing, ground deployment through infantry encirclement, artillery and armour movements to seal off selected areas in North Waziristan( NW). The press release emphasised, the action was being taken ‘on the direction of the government’ and would not discriminate ‘between foreign and local’ terrorists, eliminating them ‘regardless of hue and colour’ and wiping out their sanctuaries.

All the opposition political parties including Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf and Altaf Hussain’s MQM have supported the crackdown except Jama’at-e-Islami and Maulana Fazl ur Rahman’s Jamiat ul-Ulema-e- Islam.
