Curbing Extremism in the Muslim Community: A Call for Unity and Reform

By Kaniz Fatma, New Age Islam 31 January 2025 Addressing The Root Causes Of Extremism Through Religious Education, Unity, And Adherence To The Rule Of Law ---- The article discusses the rising issue of religious extremism within Muslim communities, emphasizing the need for greater awareness, proper religious education, and unity to combat these ideologies. It highlights the dangers of misinterpretation, the unchecked issuance of fatwas, and the glorification of violent figures. Additionally, it addresses the negative impact of political and sectarian divides, urging Muslim leaders to foster unity and respect among different sects. The article calls for the rejection of vigilante justice and stresses the importance of adhering to the rule of law, aligning with Islam's core values of peace and compassion. Introduction Religious extremism has become a significant issue affecting Muslim communities worldwide. Extremism not only distorts the true teachings of Islam but also undermines the fundamental values of peace, compassion, and human dignity. To curb extremism, it is essential to understand its root causes and adopt comprehensive strategies that align with the core values of Islam. Lack of Awareness and Misguided Information One of the main causes of extremism is the lack of awareness and understanding of religious teachings. Many individuals, particularly those with limited religious education, rely on distorted or incomplete information. This can lead to the misinterpretation of religious texts and the spread of extremist ideologies. To address this, it is essential to promote religious literacy. Islamic scholars and educators must prioritize the dissemination of authentic knowledge based on the Qur'an and Hadith. Muslims should be encouraged to seek knowledge from qualified scholars and credible sources to avoid being misled by extremists or harmful ideologies. Unchecked Authority in Issuing Fatwas Another major issue contributing to extremism is the growing trend of individuals—often with limited religious education—issuing fatwas (religious rulings) without proper knowledge or understanding of the context. This unregulated practice can lead to misguided judgments, often inciting hatred and violence. To combat this, religious institutions and scholars must take a stronger stance in regulating the issuance of fatwas. Only qualified scholars should be entrusted with such responsibilities, and fatwas must be based on thorough research and a deep understanding of Islamic principles, including compassion, justice, and respect for human life. Elevating Criminals to Hero Status A disturbing trend in some communities is the glorification of individuals who engage in acts of violence or murder in the name of Islam. Figures like Mumtaz Qadri, who assassinated a political leader, are hailed as heroes, despite their actions being in direct contradiction to Islamic teachings on the sanctity of life. The Muslim community must reject the glorification of such individuals and emphasize the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding the sanctity of human life. Scholars must openly condemn these acts and remind the community that Islam forbids vigilante justice and taking the law into one's own hands. Political and Sectarian Divides Extremism often thrives in politically and sectarian-divided environments. The exploitation of religious differences for political gain has exacerbated tensions within the Muslim community. The sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia Muslims, for example, is often manipulated by external and internal political actors, leading to violence and division. To address this, Muslim leaders and scholars must promote unity and mutual respect between different sects. The focus should be on the common principles of Islam, such as belief in one God, the Prophethood, and the Day of Judgment. Political agendas should not be allowed to overshadow religious teachings that promote peace and coexistence. Lawlessness and Vigilantism In some instances, individuals take the law into their own hands, believing they are enforcing Islamic law. This practice is not supported by the Qur'an or Hadith and is a distortion of Islam. The notion that Muslims have the right to enforce punishments, such as those for blasphemy, outside the legal system is a dangerous and misguided belief. Religious scholars must openly educate the community that Islam does not permit vigilante justice and that legal matters must be handled by the appropriate authorities. In non-Islamic states, Muslims must adhere to the laws of the land and respect the legal processes in place. Conclusion Curbing extremism in the Muslim community requires a collective effort from scholars, educators, leaders, and ordinary Muslims. By promoting religious literacy, regulating the issuance of fatwas, rejecting the glorification of criminals, fostering harmony among sects despite theological differences, and emphasizing adherence to the rule of law, we can begin to address the root causes of extremism. Islam, at its core, is a religion of peace, compassion, and justice. It is time to return to these fundamental values and work together to build a more harmonious and just society. --- Kaniz Fatma is a classic Islamic scholar and a regular columnist for New Age Islam. Humanism Is Perhaps The Default Philosophical Position For Millions Of People In The World Today

By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 31 January 2025 This is a rejoinder to Rasheed's morbid and monomaniac insistence that only those who're religious and believe in god are morally superior humans who've guided mankind. Referring to AI, this irascible man says, "AI chose ten figures from the last hundred years whose moral influence shaped societies. Notably, not a single atheist appears on the list." Very good! My question is: Has AI independently generated the names of these morally sound theists? Who fed the information? Obviously, humans. Remember, AI also chooses figures who never believed in god and religion but contributed to humanity. There are many atheist humanitarians from the last century, including social activists, politicians, and philosophers. Goparaju Ramachandra Rao Also known as Gora, he was an Indian social reformer and atheist activist who founded the Atheist Centre in Andhra Pradesh. He was a participant in the Indian independence movement. Bertrand Russell A prominent atheist, philosopher, mathematician, and campaigner for social, intellectual, and sexual freedom. He wrote Why I am Not a Christian, in which he argued that religions are harmful and untrue. Jawaharlal Nehru India's first Prime Minister, who disavowed belief in gods and was described as a "scientific humanist". Sahodaran Ayyappan Co-founder of the modern atheist movement in Kerala, India. He was also a minister in the Travancore-Cochin government. John William Gott An English trouser salesman and leader of the Freethought Socialist League. He was the last person in Britain to be imprisoned for blasphemy. Christopher Hitchens A British-American columnist, polemicist, and free-thought activist. He wrote the New York Times best seller God is not Great. And last but not least, the French existentialist and Nobel laureate Albert Camus who fought for human dignity throughout his life. His sublime morality, compassion and ethical values didn't stem from any sort of religiosity, spirituality or Christianity. The Dalai Lama has shown the way in his book, Beyond Religion. He argues that compassion is the most central instinct which enables human beings to survive and thrive. Compassion leads us to treat others as we would wish them to treat us—a central tenet of Christianity—that is, with concern, affection and warm-heartedness. The Dalai Lama—a lifelong Buddhist, of course—advocates, “an approach to ethics which makes no recourse to religion”. He argues for a secular ethics and sees no contradiction between that and his religious beliefs. Secular ethics, or humanism, is beyond religion, as the Dalai Lama suggests, not beneath or above it. By the way, was the Buddha morally unsound as he was an apatheist (one who goes beyond theism and atheism)? We now know from evolutionary biology and neuroscience that these values are innate in our biological nature. Humans survive and thrive only if they espouse these values. We need to promote these values within ourselves and in others. Many will say that they pursue ethical and humanist principles because of their religion. That's okay. Secular morality is not anti-religious, it is areligious. Of course, the areligious increasingly are the majority of adults all over the world, not in specific countries or pockets. If you want to teach morality on the basis that it conforms to the will of god and you know that three-quarters of the people you are teaching will lose their faith in god by the time they are 20, how are you expecting them to lead moral lives? What support do they have for leading moral lives in their adult life?” It is an interesting fact that if you look at the countries which all the research shows have the lowest number of people who believe in religion, you will find that they have the lowest crime rates, the lowest levels of infant mortality, the best education systems and the best social security systems. They are, of course, Sweden, Denmark, Canada to some extent, Estonia and countries of that nature. In the United States, the states with the lowest crime rates and the best systems of education and so on are in fact those which have the lowest number of people who believe in religion. I am not making a direct correlation between the two, but it is difficult not to. The fact is that that is what is happening. I am sorry, but I do not believe that somehow we are living in a worse society now than we did; we do not, we live in a much better world than we had in the past. Society has improved as religion has declined. Humanism is perhaps the default philosophical position for millions of people in the world today. Yet, the adamant theists, who love to make a fetish of their idiosyncrasies, will continue to assert that theistic morality and its adherents and proponents have made the world a better place to live in. Let those deluded individuals live in their delusional world. Atheism is already helping to free man from his dependence upon punishment and reward as the heavenly bargain-counter for the poor in spirit. True morality should not be contingent on fear of divine retribution but rather arise from rational, ethical considerations rooted in human experience. Atheism thereby liberates individuals to pursue virtue for its own sake rather than for potential cosmic favour. ----- A regular columnist for New Age Islam, Sumit Paul is a researcher in comparative religions, with special reference to Islam. Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha: A Paragon Of Faith And Devotion

By Sahil Razvi, New Age Islam 31 January 2025 Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha, Mother Of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Rahmatullah Alaih, Was A Paragon Of Faith And Devotion. Known For Her Miracles And Unwavering Trust In Allah, Her Life Inspires Millions. Her Shrine In Delhi Continues To Attract Devotees Seeking Blessings And Spiritual Solace. Main Points: 1. Descendant of Imam Husain, daughter of Sayyid Arab Bukhari. 2. Renowned for piety, devotion, and miracles. 3. Trusted Allah in times of hardship, declaring, "Today we are Allah’s guests." 4. Her supplications, like the return of a runaway maid, were instantly answered. 5. Her shrine in Delhi remains a spiritual haven for devotees. ----- Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha, revered as Mai Sahiba Chishtiya Dehlavi, was a woman of extraordinary spiritual stature and the mother of one of India’s most celebrated Sufi saints, Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya (May Allah have mercy on him). Her life was a testament to unwavering faith, deep devotion, and an unshakable connection with Allah. Known for her piety and asceticism, she was often compared to Rabia Basri, the famous female Sufi saint, and was regarded as a ‘Waliyah-e-Kamilah’ (perfect saint) of her time. Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha, whose full name was Sayyida Zulaikha, was the daughter of Hazrat Sayyid Arab Bukhari (May Allah have mercy on him), a descendant of the noble lineage of Sayyids tracing back to Imam Husain (May Allah be pleased with him). Her father, a scholar and spiritual luminary, migrated from Bukhara (modern-day Uzbekistan) to Ghazni, Afghanistan, and later settled in Badaun, India. Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha inherited her father’s spiritual legacy and grew up in an environment steeped in Islamic scholarship and Sufi traditions. Her lineage is a remarkable chain of noble ancestors, connecting her to the family of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). She was a Sayyida, a descendant of Imam Husain, and her family tree includes illustrious names such as Imam Jaafar Sadiq, Imam Musa Kazim, and Imam Ali Raza (May Allah be pleased with them all). Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha’s life was marked by her profound devotion to Allah and her unwavering trust in His mercy. Her son, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, often recounted stories of her spiritual excellence and the miracles that occurred through her prayers. One such incident involved a maid who ran away from her household, leaving her in distress. With no one to assist her, Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha turned to Allah in prayer. She spread her prayer mat, uncovered her head, and recite Durood Sharif (blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) 500 times. She then made a heartfelt supplication, vowing not to cover her head until the maid returned. Miraculously, a voice from the unseen declared that the maid had been apprehended and brought back. Shortly after, the maid was found and returned to her. Another remarkable aspect of her life was her unwavering trust in Allah’s provision. Whenever the household faced scarcity, she would calmly declare, “Today we are Allah’s guests.” Her faith was so strong that her words brought immediate solace to her family. On one occasion, when there was no food in the house, she repeated this phrase, and soon after, a bag of grain was left at their doorstep. The grain lasted for an unusually long time, and her son, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, often recalled how her words filled him with peace and certainty in Allah’s mercy. Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha’s spiritual influence extended beyond her household. She was known for her ability to foresee events in her dreams and her prayers were often answered in extraordinary ways. Her son, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, frequently sought her blessings and guidance. He once shared that whenever he faced a difficulty, he would visit her grave and make a request, and his need would be fulfilled within a week Her spiritual stature was so high that even in dreams, she was seen as a source of salvation. Hazrat Khwaja Sayyid Amir Khurd (May Allah have mercy on him) narrated a dream in which his wife saw the Day of Judgment. Amidst the chaos, a man holding a flag called out, “This is the flag of Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha, the mother of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. Come under this flag.” She joined under the flag and found peace and safety. Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha passed away on the 1st of Jumada al-Thani. Her final moments were filled with profound spiritual significance. On the night of her demise, it was a moonlit night. When her son, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, saw the moon, he went to her as per his habit to congratulate her on the sighting of the moon. She asked him, “Whose feet will you place your head on from now on?” He understood that her time of departure was near. Overcome with emotion, he asked, “O my beloved mother, to whom will you entrust me?” She replied, “I will answer this tomorrow morning.” The next morning, she held his right hand and prayed, “O Allah, I entrust him to You.” With these words, she departed from this world. Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya often said that even if his mother had left him an entire house filled with gold and jewels, he would not have been as happy as he was with her final words of entrustment to Allah. Her Urs (death anniversary) is celebrated on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of Jumada al-Awwal, attracting devotees from far and wide who seek her blessings and intercession. Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha’s shrine is located in Adhchini village, on the Arvind Marg in Delhi. If you are coming from the All India Medical Institute, it will be on the right side, and if you are coming from Mehrauli, it will be on the left side. Her shrine remains a place of spiritual solace and inspiration for countless devotees. Hazrat Bibi Zulaikha, also known as Mai Sahiba Chishtiya Dehlavi, was a beacon of faith, devotion, and trust in Allah. Her life serves as a timeless example of how unwavering faith and reliance on Allah can transform ordinary lives into extraordinary spiritual journeys. May Allah shower countless blessings upon her and grant us forgiveness through her intercession. Between Hope and Despair: 75 Years of Indian Republic

By Ram Puniyani for New Age Islam 31 January 2025 The coming of Indian Constitution on 26 January 1950 was the major landmark in the life of our country. It gave us the core values of Liberty Equality, Fraternity and Justice. It was welcomed by all except the Hindu Nationalists, who said that there is nothing Indian about it, there are no values in it, which our Holy Manusmriti has given. They stated that Manusmriti is the law today (Savarkar). We were fortunate that forward looking Nehru and champion of democratic value Ambedkar were at the helm to steer the journey forward. The architect of modern India, Nehru ensured that on one hand the centre of Indian policy would revolve around the Public Sector, Education, Scientific research, irrigation and health service improvement among others. The directive principle of promoting scientific temper was being followed till late, though with lots of lacunae. Despite the massive tragedy of India’s partition and migration of lakhs of Hindus and Muslims across the border and terrible violence, the country was steered towards improvement in the basic necessities like, hunger, health, education and employment. This was the foundation which Indian leaders firmly planted in the country. The communal groups while doing their work behind the curtain and sometimes orchestrating violence still were a marginal force till 1980. The firmness in promoting social justice was appreciable, but it still could not eradicate the caste system and there was a deep-rooted bias against the Dalits. The other major flaw was the spread of misconceptions against religious minorities, mainly Muslims, and later Christians who were also drawn into the orbit of ‘Hate and consequent’ violence. After the Shah Bano fiasco the communal forces made big strides on the pretext of appeasement of minorities (particularly Muslims). The implementation of the Mandal Commission report giving 26% of reservations to OBC’s was used as an occasion for Hindu nationalists to show their deeper designs. They pushed forward the issue of Ram Temple being underneath Babri Masjid and so Ram Temple should be built there. On this issue massive mobilization of Hindus was done. The social perceptions about Ram temple being underneath the mosque was articulated and spread far and wide by the vast network of RSS Shakhas and its affiliates. This led to the demolition of Babri mosque and orchestration of violence against Muslims, particularly in Mumbai, Surat and Bhopal. This massive violence was to be followed by carnage in Gujarat (2002), Delhi (2019), UP (2013) and Kandhamal (2008). In Keonjhar Orissa Father Stains was burnt by Rajendra Pal (Dara Singh) of Bajrang dal and massive anti Christian violence was unleashed in Kandhamal later. The issues of Holy Cow, beef eating and love jihad and innumerable other jihads have been floated and the intimidated Muslims are forced to live under tremendous fear. Muslim ghettos are the order of the day in many cities. Post communal violence the phenomenon which was observed was that in these areas, where the violence had taken place, BJP became stronger in the electoral arena. A sense of fear is also building up among sections of Christian community. This trajectory from the beginning, where democratic values, pluralism were to be the core of the country, was gradually undermined. Last ten years in particular have seen the worst situation with the rule of BJP. Though nominally this rule has been under the cover of NDA, it is BJP and its agenda of Hindu Rashtra which has been ruling the roost. This period has seen the state institutions like ED, IT, Intelligence agencies, Election Commission and to some extent judiciary, have been internally fallen prey to the influence of Hindu Right and this has weakened the values of our Constitution to no end. The increasing poverty, income disparity, worsening of education and health is extremely disturbing. The minorities are being relegated to second class citizenship. The political representation of Muslims has fallen dismally. There is not a single MP from ruling BJP and no Muslim minister in the Cabinet. Scientific temper, the part of our directive principles of Constitution, has gone for a toss. The top academic institutions are organizing lectures on producing something like ‘Master race’ (Garbh Sanskar knowledge). Various such centres have come up dishing out such advice. Even IIT Madras director praised the use of cow urine as a panacea for many diseases. The rise of Babas dishing out all round wisdom is a worrying phenomenon. Many such Babas are promoted indirectly by the state. The values of the Constitution are being mauled subtly, with the claims that India got real Independence not on 15th August 1947 but on 22nd January 2024 when Ram Temple was inaugurated. The claims that the Constitution does not conform to our Civilizational principles is picking up and demand to scrap the acts like ‘Freedom of Places of Worship’ (1991) are becoming stronger by the day. This act states that the status of old places of worship will be retained as was on 15th August 1947. In this dismal scenario, where is the hope? The atmosphere of relief began partly with ‘Bharat Jodo’ and ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatras’. (Unite India for Justice) There is a growing realization amongst a large section of the population that the party which promotes and uses religion for political goals is the real danger to our democracy and our Constitution. This rising awareness is running parallel to many political parties trying to form INDIA coalition. To add on to these multiple campaigns to promote harmony and amity are being undertaken by social groups. Many of the social groups which have massively contributed to the rights of people are coming together as platforms to raise the popular awareness about dangers of misconceptions being promoted by communal parties and its parent organization. They are also trying to spread awareness about the real meaning of Constitutional morality and what it should mean for the country. The general awareness about these issues in the society is very heart-warming. These novel efforts which aim to promote fraternity and other core values of the Constitution are moving in the positive direction. Our neighbouring countries which have followed ‘fundamentalism-communalism’ have been in a dismal condition. The communal forces are trying to push us in that direction. Need is to reinforce the values of our Constitution today with greater vigor. Donald Trump's Historic Presidency: A Shift in Global Politics

By Hasan Kamal, Tr. New Age Islam Translated from Urdu by New Age Islam 31 January 2025 From a surprise victory to a ceasefire in Gaza, Trump's first days in office signal a change in U.S. foreign policy and international alliances, reshaping relationships with key leaders like Netanyahu, Modi, and Imran Khan. Donald Trump became the 47th President of the United States. His presidency itself is a miracle, because until the election results were announced, no one knew he would win, including the American media, the Indian media, and even ourselves, to be honest. However, we had said that in the end, Donald Trump would win. There are several historic moments in his becoming president. The first historic event was that the temperature in Washington was well below freezing, an extraordinary cold. As a result, Trump's inauguration, which was supposed to be held on a large scale in an open field, was moved indoors to the Senate chambers, which are enclosed on all sides, due to the cold. The interesting part is that it was previously said that those attending the inauguration ceremony had to pay between $25,000 to $100,000. Well, the public benefited by saving that money. But that was merely a coincidence. The real historic moment came when it was revealed that, at Trump’s insistence, a sudden ceasefire was announced in war-torn Gaza, which no one had expected—not even us. During his campaign, Trump realized that not only all Muslims in the U.S. but especially Palestinians and Arabs were ready to vote for him. It is also important to note that these Palestinian Arabs had met with Joe Biden as well as Donald Trump during the campaign. Their meeting with Biden had not been very hopeful, but since Trump had taken an anti-war stance, the Palestinians believed that he would not allow a war in Gaza. It should also be noted that Donald Trump's statement was not a press release, nor political rhetoric; rather, it was a political action. Before assuming the presidency, Trump had stated that the ceasefire in Gaza would last for six weeks, and if anyone violated it, strong action would be taken. This was not just a statement; you could call it a political stance because Trump had clearly said that the agreement would start on January 19, and he would monitor it for three months. What happens after that would be decided later. The agreement had been guaranteed by Sheikh of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, ensuring its implementation, and it was clear that work had already begun on this agreement. According to the terms, Israeli prisoners held in Gaza would be released, and it was also agreed that for every Israeli prisoner released, between thirty to fifty Palestinian prisoners would be freed by Israel. For Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump's attitude was completely incomprehensible. Historically, every U.S. president has stood by Israel. It was said about Barack Obama that he didn’t even want to see Netanyahu's face, but he also couldn't distance himself that much. For the first time, Netanyahu realized that the world’s greatest ally, the U.S., had now abandoned him. And not just abandoned him, but wanted him to provide proof of that abandonment. Netanyahu presented this agreement before the Israeli cabinet. The cabinet had a total of 32 members, and 24 of them voted in favour of the agreement. Only 8 members opposed it. In any case, the agreement was approved. Israel's most powerful intelligence agency had previously informed Netanyahu that his influence in Israel was waning, and that he was now a prime minister only on paper. There were several other historic moments in Donald Trump’s rise to the presidency. The committee that decides which heads of state will attend the inauguration had included Xi Jinping, the president of China, and a staunch adversary of the United States. It is said that he refused to attend, but he did have a phone conversation with Donald Trump. Interestingly, Trump did not send an invitation to his dear friend Narendra Modi. It is also strange that, just like all world leaders, the Indian government was formally sent an invitation. So, if Narendra Modi had wanted to, he could have easily attended, though he wouldn’t have been granted the status of a state guest. If he had attended, he would have had to strain his eyes to figure out which line he was in. In any case, Narendra Modi declined to attend, and we believe it was a wise decision. In these columns, we have written before that Trump’s arrival is good for some and bad for others. We also mentioned that the friendly relationship between Narendra Modi and Trump was about to end. We still believe that the relationship between the U.S. and India will not be negatively affected, but Modi, who has projected himself as a god-like figure in India, with millions of fans who share the same belief, must now realize that the absence of an invitation from the U.S. means that the power of his prime ministership has been diminished. Like his close friend Benjamin Netanyahu, he too is now just a prime minister on paper. Donald Trump's arrival is somewhat beneficial for Imran Khan in the sense that he congratulated Trump on his election victory and also stated that he did not want any help from him for his release. He wanted to be freed solely with the support of the Pakistani people. However, it is widely known that Trump likes Imran Khan. It's not that Trump would directly call the Pakistani government to ask them to release Imran Khan, but there are many other channels through which such a message could be conveyed, one of which could be the behaviour of the U.S. ambassador in Pakistan, which holds considerable influence. It is also said that it is highly possible that Zalmay Khalilzad could become the new U.S. ambassador to Pakistan. If that happens, it would be a shock to Pakistan's establishment, so much so that they might be left reeling. But all these developments show that the winds of global politics are certainly shifting. ------ Urdu Article: The Political Winds Are Changing In the World دنیا میں سیاست کی ہوا کا رخ بدل رہا ہے URL: https://www.newageislam.com/current-affairs/donald-trump-historic-presidency-global-politics/d/134481 New Age Islam, Islam Online, Islamic Website, African Muslim News, Arab World News, South Asia News, Indian Muslim News, World Muslim News, Women in Islam, Islamic Feminism, Arab Women, Women In Arab, Islamophobia in America, Muslim Women in West, Islam Women and Feminism

Need To Develop A Rational Mindset

By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 30 January 2025 At least seven people were killed and around 10 injured in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in northern India on Wednesday, said an official, as tens of millions gathered to take a holy dip on the most auspicious day of the six-week Hindu festival. Those who died will now directly go to heaven as they breathed their last during a pilgrimage or a very sacred event! I'm not making fun of this mishap. Nor is it black or grotesque humour of a frivolous person. I sympathise, nay empathise, with those who lost their lives. My point is: Don't people, particularly Hindus, understand that where there's an ocean of people, chances of happening such disasters cannot be ruled out. Are these people really educated? Do they have even a skerrick of scientific temperament? Proper and rational education is the key to empowering future generations and driving scientific advancements. Education equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities needed to understand and solve complex problems. By providing access to quality education, we empower future generations to become active contributors to society, enabling them to unlock their potential and create a positive impact in various spheres. Furthermore, education is crucial for driving scientific advancements and innovation. It cultivates a curious and inquisitive mindset, encouraging individuals to pursue scientific research and make ground-breaking discoveries. Education not only imparts knowledge but also builds a foundation for continued learning and encourages the pursuit of knowledge for the betterment of humanity. But education alone cannot foster scientific temperament. Even seemingly educated and rational people also entertain beliefs that have no scientific bases. They're also driven by their deep-seated irrationalities, called Sanskaar. To cut the matter short, we may be educated but we're not truly evolved or rationally sound. A rationalist's greatest asset is an open and inquisitive mind. A rationalist is not merely someone who has expertise in a specific field like a scientist, but someone who constantly asks questions, challenges assumptions, and seeks to expand their understanding. An open and inquisitive mind allows rationalists to approach problems creatively, connecting seemingly unrelated concepts and discovering new avenues of research. By employing this mindset, a rationalist or a truly intellectual person can break through boundaries, unravel mysteries, and make innovative contributions to their respective fields. Ultimately, it is the willingness to question, explore, and embrace the unknown that pushes the boundaries of rationalistic knowledge forward. Unless we all pluck out our embedded and engrained irrationality and embrace rationality at a collective and evolved level, irrational and superstitious people will continue to die during Kumbh or Haj. Lastly, the population of Allahabad or Prayagraj is approximately 60 lakhs. Nearly 2-crore pilgrims have assembled for the ongoing Mahakumbh. Will not such tragedies happen now and then? Why are devout souls so willing to dig their own graves at an apparently 'holy' place? Do they ask this simple question? Had they asked, they wouldn't have visited any such place and lost their lives. Alexander Pope rightly said , "fools rush in where angels fear to tread" (An essay on criticism). Let me paraphrase this with apologies to Alexander Pope, "Theists rush in where atheists and rationalists fear to tread! Work of Khwaja Hassan Nizami on Sri Krishna Promotes Communal Harmony in India

By Dr. Zafar Darak Qasmi, New Age Islam 30 January 2025 ‘Sri Krishna Jeevan’ is an ever- green work on the biography of the sacred deity of Hinduism Sri Krishna. Astonishingly, the book has been written by a Muslim mystic known as Khwaja Hassan Nizami. Being a laureate of Urdu, the author has composed the book in a very eloquent language. Khwaja Hassan Nizami ------ It should be noted that Khwaja Sahib was a Muslim Sufi. Hence, the impartiality employed by the writer is not only worth importance, but sends a message of solidarity and goodwill to the society. Though the target of the book was Muslims, but people of every religion and belief can benefit from it. There is no any other parallel book in Urdu of this style and glory. Every corner of Sri Krishna’s life has been recorded with such excellence and simplicity that even people of little knowledge can access to it easily. A careful reading of this book suggests that this book should be included in the curriculum of Madrasas. Even school students must be made acquainted with such books to instil in them a sense of respect and regard for the leaders of other religions which seems to be missing in them. In a plural society like India, the writing of such a book by a Muslim strengthens the spirit of Ganga-Jamani civilization and national unity. India has been a hub of spirituality since long. Its precedents may not be found in any other part of the world. This land has always been enriched by great Sufis and thinkers. But, the majority of people in India are Hindus. Hence, the composition of such a book by a Muslim scholar on the life of a Hindu leader becomes doubly important. By this book, the Muslims community of India will be able to know the real life of Sri Krishna and their minds will not doubt about them. Today, many troubles are being created in society on the basis of suspicion, ignorance, prejudice and narrow-mindedness. Such books certainly plays a fundamental role in removing misconceptions from society. It is not right to criticize Sri Krishna or any religious leader on the basis of unreliable sources. If this book is read without any kind of prejudice, it will certainly have a beneficial effect on society. Hatred and misunderstandings will be effectively removed, an atmosphere of harmony and tolerance will be created in society. The purpose and intention of writing this book is also to remove the misconceptions that have developed among Hindus and Muslims regarding Sri Krishna and the relations between the two nations will remain pleasant. It is a truth that when respect and sanctity of each other's religion and distinguished personalities are ensured in the society, it is inevitably easy to form the society on righteous and healthy lines. The great tragedy of today is that misunderstandings and hatred are spreading in society regarding religions. The reason for this is that we say something inappropriate without reading a religion and without understanding its spirit and teachings. Therefore, to maintain social and intellectual harmony and balance, it is necessary that we read religions and become fully familiar with their teachings and instructions, traditions and guidelines so that our words, actions, character and deeds do not hurt anyone. Following the example of Khwaja Hassan Nizami, even today, Muslim scholars and intellectuals should introduce Hindu religious and spiritual personalities in Urdu in large numbers and reach Muslim institutions and neighbourhoods so that the number of people with positive thoughts in society can increase. Similarly, there is a great need to highlight the religious books of Hinduism and their teachings so that positive thinking and ideology can flourish in society. Hatred can be eradicated. If small booklets are prepared and published, then its beneficial effects will be felt in the society very soon. Similarly, Hindu scholars should also write about Islam with their own pen and convey it to the Hindu people and youth so that the things that have been spread about Islam can be eradicated and those who are earning their political bread by cultivating hatred in the society can close their shops. It is absolutely true that no religion is against humanity nor does it teach its followers to be harsh or cruel. Therefore, those who are instigating violence in the society in the name of religion, regardless of their religion, the correct thing is that they are neither sincere for their religion nor for the society in which they live. Therefore, one should not curse the religion of an individual because of his mistake. Another message of Khwaja Hassan Nizami's book Krishna Jeevan is that such literature will also curb Islamophobia in a pluralistic and pluralistic society like India and will also strengthen the bond of brotherhood and love between the two nations.

His Family, Disciples, And Literary Works Left A Lasting Impact On Islamic Thought. His Shrine In Kakori, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Remains A Place Of Spiritual Significance. Main Points: 1. Hazrat Sheikh Nizamuddin Bhikari was a prominent Sufi saint from Kakori, Uttar Pradesh. 2. He authored important works on Islamic mysticism, jurisprudence, and Tasawwuf. 3. His teachings emphasized piety, contentment, and helping others. 4. His descendants and disciples were influential scholars in their own right. 5. His shrine in Kakori continues to be a spiritual centre. ----- Hazrat Sayyid Muhammad Nizamuddin Shah Bhikhari Badshah (RA) is one of the most notable figures and figures revered in the history of Islam, particularly the Qadriya Razviya Sufi Order. In the town of Kakori, Lucknow district of the state of Uttar Pradesh, Hazrat Muhammad Nizamuddin (RA) was born in 890 AH (1485 CE). This great scholar of Islam, spiritual leader, and pious character left a legacy which has merged his name into that of many great luminaries of Islam. In order to understand his character and environment, let us look at his early life and ancestry. Hazrat Muhammad Nizamuddin Shah Bhikhari (RA) born of noble stock. His family lineage traced its ancestry to Hazrat Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, who was the son of Hazrat Ali, the Lion of Allah. This distinguished family lineage comprised 21 generations of pious and learned individuals, comprising numerous notable scholars and Sufi saints. The ancestral homeland of Hazrat Nizamuddin's family was Sahram, a village near Baghdad, Iraq. During the time of Qari Muhammad Siddiq (RA), however, they migrated east due to political adversity and eventually settled in Kakori, Uttar Pradesh. Kakori became a vibrant centre of Islamic education and spirituality under the guidance of this esteemed family. Hazrat Nizamuddin Shah Bhikhari (RA) received his initial education directly under the supervision of his father, Qari Saifuddin (RA), who was a genius scholar and an expert in Qira'at-e-Saba. Under his supervision, Hazrat Nizamuddin Bhikhari studied various subjects relating to the Islamic sciences, including exegesis of the Quran, Hadith studies, Fiqh, and spiritual practices. His education in the Quran and hadith was strongly rooted both in Shariah or Islamic jurisprudence and Tariqa or spiritual path. With this background of both scholarly rigor and spiritual discipline, Hazrat Nizamuddin Bhikhari (RA) finally emerged in his lifetime as a source of guidance for the generations that passed and those yet to come. Hazrat Muhammad Nizamuddin Shah Bhikari Badshah (RA) became renowned for his spiritual excellence and dedication to the Qadriya Sufi tradition. Known by titles such as ‘Umdatul Asfiya’; (The Pillar of the Pure), ‘Sartaaj-e-Zumratul Asfiya’ (Crown of the Elite Saints), and ‘Rahbar-e-Deen-e-Azam’ (The Great Guide of the Religion), he stood out as an exemplar of Islamic knowledge and spiritual devotion. He was from the Hanafi school of thought, a Hafiz of the Quran, and master of the seven modes of Quranic recitation (Qira'at). He was a true advocate of Shariah and Sunnah, which placed him on the side of Islamic orthodoxy, while his deep association with the Qadriya spiritual tradition enriched his teachings with the light of Tasawwuf (Sufism). Among Hazrat Nizamuddin's remarkable aspects of his spiritual life, it was one thing to deeply feel a sense of closeness to Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam, the founder of the Qadriya Sufi Order. Hazrat Nizamuddin Bhikhari was graced with many visions of Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam. Sometimes these visions came along with other important spiritual personalities like Hazrat Shahabuddin Umar Suharwardy and Hazrat Sheikh Akbar Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi. Once, he had Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam (RA) in a dream during Ramadan. Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam (RA) brought Hazrat Sheikh Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi (RA) before him and said, "He is a devotee of Hazrat Nizamuddin's mission." He saw such a lot of visions, which became a source of spiritual affirmation and guidance for him, and he was further strengthened to serve the Muslim Ummah. It is narrated: Hazrat Makhdoom Sheikh Saadi Siddiqi Chishti of Kakori would spend all his earnings on the same day and would say: “Let nothing remain stale, nor let a dog eat it.” Upon hearing this, someone remarked: “It is better for something stale to remain so that even a dog may benefit from it because saving (resources) can potentially benefit others. Moreover, this practice instils a sense of contentment. For this reason, the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to carry dry pieces of bread in their pockets. Such actions are not contrary to trust in Allah (Tawakkul).” Hazrat Nizamuddin Shah Bhikari (RA) spent his entire life teaching and imparting Islamic knowledge. His house in Kakori became a center of education, and students and seekers of knowledge from other parts of India and beyond flocked to learn from their master. Those students, enriched by the teachings of their master, went back to their countries and disseminated that light of Islam. Besides his scholarly endeavours, Hazrat Nizamuddin Shah Bhikhari (RA) was much concerned with the spiritual well-being of his followers. His instructions were not limited to mere theory; he taught practical application of the principles of Islam in one's life. Nizamuddin Shah Bhikari (RA) was far from being a proud man as far as his servitude was concerned. He was the same as them, despite his towering height as a scholar and Sufi. His selflessness earned him the title of "Bhikhari," which incidentally means "beggar" in Urdu. This title reflects his profound humility that he was a total man far from dependence on Allah. Hazrat Nizamuddin Shah Bhikari Badshah (RA) was a paragon of Islamic scholarship and spirituality. Describing Hazrat Nizamuddin- Badshah (RA), Hazrat Shah Abdul Qadir Badayuni said he was an ardent follower of Shariah and no comparison could be drawn with any known scholar; he was like Imam Azam Abu Hanifa (RA) in piety. Hazrat Nizamuddin (RA) is also known as the 27th Imam and Sheikh of the Qadriya Razviya Sufi Order. His descendants and disciples have carried on his legacy to date, so his teachings remain a source of guidance for generations. Descendants The blessed marriage of Hazrat Sheikh took place in the town of Hargam in Sitapur district, Uttar Pradesh. From this union, six sons and four daughters were born. One of his daughters was married into a Sayyid family in the town of Kashur, and from this marriage was born Sayyid Pir Muhammad. Another daughter was married to Sayyid Jalaluddin, the son of Makhdoom Sheikh Saadi Chishti Siddiqi of Kakori. The third daughter’s marriage took place in Hargam, while the fourth daughter passed away. His sons were highly learned scholars, adorned with piety and devotion. Their blessed names are as follows, Hazrat Sheikh Alam, Hazrat Sheikh Suman, Hazrat Hafiz Sheikh Shihabuddin, also known as Sheikh Sundhan, Hazrat Sheikh Fitna, Hazrat Sheikh Abdullah, Hazrat Sheikh Khwaja Rizwanullah Eminent Disciples Among the prominent disciples of Hazrat Sheikh Nizamuddin were the following distinguished personalities, Hazrat Sheikh Abdullah bin Makhdoom Sheikh Nizamuddin, Hazrat Sheikh Qazi Ziauddin, also known as Zia, Hazrat Mulla Abdur Rashid Multani, author of Zad-ul-Akhirah, Hazrat Mir Sharafuddin Shikarpuri, Hazrat Sheikh Muhammad Khorjavi, Hazrat Sheikh Badiuddin Manakpuri, Hazrat Maulana Nasruddin Sambhali, Hazrat Muhibullah Khairabadi, Hazrat Mirza Shamsuddin Khan Koka, Hazrat Mulla Abdul Karim, grandson of Hazrat Muhammad Nizamuddin, also known as Shah Bhikari Badshah Writings Hazrat Sheikh Nizamuddin authored four works: Kitab Minhaj: Related to Islamic jurisprudence and principles, Kitab Ma’arif: Discusses the science of Tasawwuf (Islamic mysticism), Translation and commentary of the book Mulhimat Qadri: Written in Persian during his stay in Kalpi Sharif, as instructed by Hazrat Sayyid Ahmad Baghdadi, Tuhfa-e-Nizamiya: A treatise comprising detailed and well-reasoned answers to three important questions. A Critical Refutation of Maulana Maududi’s Concept of Hakimiyya

By Grace Mubashir, New Age Islam 28 January 2025 Maududi’s concept of Hakimiyya is a flawed and rigid interpretation that ignores Islamic theological principles, historical precedents, and practical realities. The sovereignty of Allah, as understood by classical scholars, does not negate human legislative authority or participatory governance. Instead, Islam mandates ethical leadership, justice, and consultation, allowing for flexible governance within an Islamic framework. Major Points: 1. Abul A'la Maududi’s concept of Hakimiyya offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the relationship between Islam, governance, and society. By emphasizing the sovereignty of Allah, Maududi sought to create a vision for an Islamic system that upholds justice, morality, and divine guidance. 2. Moderate scholars offer a more balanced and practical approach to Islamic governance, combining divine guidance and human agency. Such an understanding of governance based on the deeper context of Islamic ethics in consultation would work as a viable alternative to the theocratic vision presented by Maududi. 3. It should thus not be Hakimiyya imposed in the most rigid, dogmatic fashion but a dynamic, inclusive, and adaptive model of governance, one that finds a balance between the eternal and timeless principles of Islam and the exigencies of modern society. ------ The concept of Hakimiyya is one of the central ideas in the thought of Abul A'la Maududi (1903–1979), a prominent Islamic scholar, thinker, and founder of Jamaat-e-Islami in South Asia. Hakimiyya refers to the sovereignty of Allah, a core principle in Maududi’s political and theological philosophy. This concept has profoundly influenced Islamic revivalist movements across the globe and continues to be a subject of extensive discussion and debate. This article explores the theory of Hakimiyya as explained by Maududi, analyzes his interpretations, and discusses its application in political and social spheres. By exploring its origins, implications, and legacy, we seek to offer a balanced understanding of Hakimiyya and its place in contemporary Islamic thought. Defining Hakimiyya: Sovereignty Belongs to Allah At its core, Hakimiyya means the absolute sovereignty and authority of Allah over all aspects of life—spiritual, moral, social, and political. Maududi argued that human beings, as servants of Allah (Abd), must live their lives in accordance with the divine law revealed through the Qur'an and Sunnah. He rejected any form of sovereignty or legislation that emanates from human authority, labelling such systems as Taghut (rebellion against divine authority). According to Maududi, Allah’s sovereignty manifests in the following ways: 1.Theological Sovereignty: Allah is the Sustainer and Creator of the universe, and His sovereignty is supreme. 2. Moral Sovereignty: Moral values and ethics should find their origin in God's commands. 3. Legal-Political Sovereignty: Society should be governed by laws that are derived solely from the Qur'an and Sunnah, with Sharia as the supreme legal system. This idea of Hakimiyya forms the foundation of Maududi’s critique of secularism, nationalism, and democracy as practiced in the modern world. Maududi’s Theoretical Framework 1. Critique of Secularism Maududi considered secularism a system that separates religion from public life and puts human authority over divine will. He thought that secularism results in moral relativism, where values and laws are determined by human caprice instead of divine guidance. According to Maududi, such a system is against the Islamic principle of Tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and weakens the concept of Hakimiyya. 2. Rejection of Western-Style Democracy Maududi critiqued Western democracy for placing ultimate authority in the hands of the people. While he did not oppose the principle of consultation (Shura) or collective decision-making, he argued that the legislative process must be subordinated to divine law. In his perspective, democracy could only be acceptable within an Islamic framework, where sovereignty belongs to Allah, and elected representatives act as trustees implementing Sharia. 3. The Islamic State Maududi proposed the establishment of an Islamic state governed by Sharia. In this state, the role of the government is to implement divine laws and ensure that society adheres to Islamic principles. The Islamic state, as envisioned by Maududi, is not a theocracy ruled by clerics but a system where governance is based on the Qur'an and Sunnah, with a collective commitment to uphold Allah’s sovereignty. 4. Distinction Between Divine and Human Authority Maududi highlighted the difference between the human and divine spheres. Although humans are given limited agency, their decisions and actions must be in accordance with the general scheme of divine guidance. He insisted that any effort on the part of humans to legislate outside of Allah's will is a usurpation of divine authority. Practical Application of Hakimiyya: Theory and Practice 1. Political Implications The concept of Hakimiyya shaped Maududi’s vision for an Islamic political system. He argued that Muslims have an obligation to strive for the establishment of an Islamic state where Sharia governs all aspects of life. This vision inspired the creation of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1941, a movement dedicated to promoting Islamic governance through peaceful and gradual means. Maududi’s political activism sought to address the challenges faced by Muslims in colonial India and post-independence Pakistan. He believed that only by adhering to Hakimiyya could Muslims achieve justice, equality, and moral integrity in society. 2. Social Implications Maududi applied the idea of Hakimiyya to social and cultural spheres as well, calling for the Islamization of education, media, and public life. He thought that Muslims had to counter the impact of Western ideologies and lifestyles, which he considered incompatible with Islamic values. Rather, he urged a return to the Qur'an and Sunnah as the foundation of individual and collective behaviour. 3. Economic Implications In the economic sphere, Maududi emphasized the importance of Islamic principles such as the prohibition of interest (Riba) and the equitable distribution of wealth. He argued that Hakimiyya demands a just economic system that eliminates exploitation and ensures the welfare of all members of society. 4. Global Implications Maududi’s concept of Hakimiyya resonated beyond South Asia, influencing Islamic revivalist movements in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. His writings inspired figures such as Sayyid Qutb in Egypt, who incorporated similar ideas into his critique of secularism and advocacy for Islamic governance. Legacy of Hakimiyya The concept of Hakimiyya continues to shape Islamic thought and activism. It has inspired numerous Islamic movements seeking to establish governance systems rooted in Sharia. At the same time, it has sparked debates about the role of religion in politics, the compatibility of Islam with democracy, and the interpretation of Sharia in modern contexts. Maududi’s articulation of Hakimiyya remains a cornerstone of Islamic revivalist discourse, reflecting the enduring tension between tradition and modernity in the Muslim world. While his ideas have inspired many, they have also sparked controversy and debate. The challenges of implementing Hakimiyya in contemporary societies highlight the need for nuanced and context-sensitive approaches to Islamic governance. Nonetheless, Maududi’s contribution to Islamic thought remains a vital part of the intellectual and political landscape of the Muslim world. A Critical Refutation of Maududi’s Concept of Hakimiyya The concept of Hakimiyya (sovereignty of Allah), as articulated by Abul A'la Maududi, has been a cornerstone of modern Islamist thought. Maududi’s interpretation posits that ultimate sovereignty belongs to Allah alone, and that human governance must strictly adhere to divine law, rejecting secular and democratic systems that vest authority in the people. However, this perspective has been widely challenged by moderate Islamic scholars, who argue that Maududi’s approach is a misinterpretation of Islamic theology, history, and jurisprudence. This article critically examines the flaws in Maududi’s concept of Hakimiyya, relying on theological evidence, historical precedent, and the arguments of moderate scholars who advocate for a more balanced and contextual understanding of Islamic governance. 1. Misinterpretation of Divine Sovereignty and Human Agency Maududi’s Hakimiyya asserts that divine sovereignty negates any form of human legislative authority, thereby making modern democratic systems inherently un-Islamic. However, this view misrepresents classical Islamic thought, which recognizes human agency (Ikhtiyar) within the framework of divine guidance. Qur'anic Perspective on Human Agency Allah's sovereignty (Rububiyya) doesn't dispossess human beings of governance participation. The Quran confirms human agency in various verses: "Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it." (Qur'an 33:72) This verse shows that humans are the rulers and have responsibility to govern morality rather than acting as a people in a rule of a theocracy. Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl is a prominent Islamic law scholar; he argues that The belief that divine sovereignty excludes human legislative power is not only unsupported but also incompatible with the principle of human stewardship (khilafah) espoused by the Qur'an. The role of man in government should be established in a framework of morality and ethics rather than as a mere expression of a theocracy. El Fadl, Speaking in God's Name: Islamic Law, Authority, and Women, 2001 Thus, divine sovereignty in Islam does not negate human governance, but rather establishes moral and ethical boundaries within which human agency operates. 2. The Prophet’s Political Model and Consultation (Shura) Maududi’s rigid interpretation of Hakimiyya is inconsistent with the governance model of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who engaged in consultation (Shura) and delegated authority. The Qur’an explicitly commands: "And those who have responded to [the call of] their sovereign and have established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend."(Qur'an 42:38) The Prophet (PBUH) did not establish an authoritarian system where divine command was imposed without human participation. Instead, he actively sought consultation from his companions, a practice that was institutionalized in the rightly guided Caliphate (Khulafa al-Rashidun). Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a leading contemporary scholar, refutes Maududi’s rigid approach: "Islam does not require a system in which rulers merely apply divine law, without human input. The principle of shura enables people to govern themselves according to the principles of Islam, rather than to an inflexible theocracy." (Qaradawi, Fiqh al-Dawla, 1997) Thus, a properly Islamic governance model would be consultative leadership rather than strict application of Hakimiyya as Maududi had proposed. 3. The Historical Reality of Islamic Governance Maududi’s vision of Hakimiyya disregards historical precedents from Islamic governance. Classical Islamic scholars, including Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, and Imam Al-Ghazali, did not advocate for a theocratic system where only divine laws dictate governance. Instead, they recognized a balance between divine guidance and human legislative discretion. Imam Abu Hanifa on Governance Imam Abu Hanifa (699–767 CE), the father of Sunni jurisprudence, refused to believe that God's rule abolishes human legislation. He said: "Rulers are duty-bound to rule with justice (Adl) and equity (Qist), even if certain rulings require independent human reasoning (ijtihad), as long as they are in accordance with the principles of Islam." (Kitab al-Kharaj) This view recognizes the requirement of flexible governance that portrays flexibility in response to changing social and political conditions rather than forcing an inflexible interpretation of divine sovereignty. Al-Ghazali on Leadership and Governance Imam Al-Ghazali (1058–1111 CE) also rejected the view that divine sovereignty eliminates humanity's governance: "A just ruler is one who ensures the well-being of the people and upholds Islamic principles. This does not mean that human law-making is illegitimate, but rather that it must serve justice and public interest (Maslaha)." (Al-Ghazali, Ihya Ulum al-Din) Maududi’s rigid framework contradicts these classical scholars, who recognized that divine sovereignty does not require the abolition of human governance and legislation. 4. The Danger of Takfir (Declaring Others as Un-Islamic) A major criticism of Maududi’s Hakimiyya is its tendency to delegitimize any governance system that does not conform to his interpretation of Islamic law. This has led some of his ideological successors, including Sayyid Qutb, to justify Takfir (excommunication) against Muslim governments and leaders who do not rule exclusively by Sharia. The approach has been criticized as dangerous and not based on the teachings of Islam. For instance, Sheikh Muhammad al-Ghazali (1917–1996) notes that: "The concept of an illegitimate government unless full Sharia is implemented brings one to extremism. Islam allows for gradual reform and realistic governance instead of trying to enforce a divine model." (Al-Ghazali, Fiqh al-Sirah) This concern is validated by the rise of extremist groups who misuse Hakimiyya to justify rebellion and violence. For example, ISIS and Al-Qaeda have invoked Hakimiyya to claim that Muslim-majority states are illegitimate and must be overthrown. Such distortions highlight the dangers of misapplying Maududi’s concept in contemporary contexts. 5. Compatibility of Islam with Democracy Many modern scholars claim that Islam is entirely compatible with democracy if it abides by Islamic ethics and principles. Dr. Rashid Ghannouchi, a prominent Tunisian Islamic thinker, argues: "The Islamic governance model allows for democracy within an Islamic ethical framework. There is no inherent contradiction between divine sovereignty and popular participation in governance." (Ghannouchi, Public Freedoms in the Islamic State, 2014) The concept of Shura follows ideas in democracy, such as representation, accountability, and public participation, which also run against the determination by Maududi that democracy is an unIslamic system. Conclusion Maududi’s concept of Hakimiyya is a flawed and rigid interpretation that ignores Islamic theological principles, historical precedents, and practical realities. The sovereignty of Allah, as understood by classical scholars, does not negate human legislative authority or participatory governance. Instead, Islam mandates ethical leadership, justice, and consultation, allowing for flexible governance within an Islamic framework. Moderate scholars offer a more balanced and practical approach to Islamic governance, combining divine guidance and human agency. Such an understanding of governance based on the deeper context of Islamic ethics in consultation would work as a viable alternative to the theocratic vision presented by Maududi. It should thus not be Hakimiyya imposed in the most rigid, dogmatic fashion but a dynamic, inclusive, and adaptive model of governance, one that finds a balance between the eternal and timeless principles of Islam and the exigencies of modern society. ----- A regular columnist for NewAgeIslam.com, Mubashir V.P is a PhD scholar in Islamic Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia and freelance journalist. Al Qaida Affiliate Ahmad Shara alias Al Jolani Head of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s True Face Exposed In Syria

By New Age Islam Staff Writer 28 January 2025 The US, Israel And Saudi Arab Helped ISIS To Rule Levant Main Points: 1. HTS killed 13 Shias in Homs on January 24. 2. HTS has killed 166 people in 83 attacks since January. 3. It forced locals to bray and bark. 4. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled Assad with help from Turkey, Israel and the US. ---- Al Qaida's break away faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled Bashar al Assad's government and ascended to power in Syria on December 8, 2024. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is a Sunni terrorist organisation headed by Ahmad Shara alias Al Jolani. He assumed the name Al Jolani to underline his association with Al Jolan in Syria. According to a former Al Qaida member Kamran Faridi, Al Jolani is a ruthless and cunning man who got many non-Syrian Al Qaida men killed to ascend to power. HTS was designated by the US as a terrorist organisation and it had declared a 10 billion dollar reward on Al Jolani's head. After forming his government with the help of Turkey, Israel and the US, Al Jolani had promised to honour and protect the religious and human rights of the religious and ethnic minorities of Syria but soon his government started showing its true ideological and sectarian face. On Friday 24 January, HTS fighters attacked a number of villages in Shia majority Homs province and killed 13 Shias. They destroyed tombstones and detained dozens of Shia men. That was not enough. The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham fighters forced some Shias to bark and bray. Al Jolani's men have unleashed a reign of terror in the areas of Shias and other ethnic minorities like Kurds, Christians and Yazidis since January. In the name of running a campaign against the supporters and sympathisers of Assad government, the HTS has been haunting Shias and torturing, killing and detaining them. Dozens have been killed for refusing to remove religious references or signs. Earlier on January 23, 4 people were arrested in Al Kanisa village. The UK based, SOHR (Syrian Observatory on Human Rights) said that since January, the HTS had carried out 83 attacks on Shias and other minorities and killed 166 people. It amounts to average three attacks and three killings per day. This is contradictory to the promise of the HTS that it will not target Shias and other religious minorities. Thousands of Shias of Syria have fled to Lebanon for the fear of violence and torture by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The HTS has created Shia-Sunni tensions in many villages of Syria. Recently, Al Jolani announced that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham forces would be trained according to the principles of the Sharia. This is another gimmick by this terror organisation. To the Sunni terrorist organisations, Shias, Kurds, Christians and Yazidis are kafir and therefore do not have the right to live. The fighters of such a force will not have sympathy for minorities. The predecessors of the HTS, the ISIS also followed the same ideology and killed hundreds of thousands of Shias during their so-called caliphate from 2014 to 2019. The terrorists of Al Qaida and ISIS have now joined HTS and follow the same sectarian and exclusivist ideology propagated by Syed Qutb and Ibn Taymiyya. The ISIS killed thousands of Shias and Yazidis in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan in the last ten years. With their ascent in Syria now, they have targeted the Shias of Syria. The gimmick of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham of training its forces according to the Islamic Shariah is aimed at winning the support of the Sunni fraternity, particularly, the extremist Sunni ulema like Dr Zakir Naik and cover the US- Zionist agenda of destroying the Islamic countries. Earlier, the extremist Sunni ulema of Egypt, India and Pakistan supported and issued fatwas in favour of the ISIS after it occupied a large part of Iraq and Syria and established its so -called caliphate in Mosul. It made Muslim and non-Muslim women slaves. The HTS has adopted the same strategy of using Shariah to win the sympathy of Sunni ulema, journalists and pseudo-intellectuals to fulfil the zionist agenda. The idea of jihad against the imperialist countries and the establishment of a caliphate in Islamic countries has been used as useful and effective political tools by the imperialist forces against the Islamic countries. The US and Israel have given birth to jihadi organisations like the Al Qaida, the ISIS, Al Nusrah, Al Shabab, Boko Haram, Taliban and now HTS in Asian and African countries and funded and trained them. These organisations espouse local or Islamic causes to gain support of the gullible Muslim youth and extremist Islamic clerics with little knowledge and insight of world politics. The Sunni Muslim countries have also fell in this trap as the US creates the fear of Iran and Syria among the rulers of the Sunni countries which compels them support and fund these Sunni terrorist organisations. Using this strategy, the US and Israel succeeded in bringing the ISIS to power in Mosul in 2014, bringing Taliban to power in Afghanistan in 1996 and 2021 and bringing the HTS to power in Syria in 2024. With the help of these terrorist organisations, the US and Israel have achieved their military goals without using their traditional army. The US has been able to easily destroy and bring about regime change in Islamic countries because of the support of the Islamic clerics to the terrorist and extremist organisations in the name of jihad against Shias or for the establishment of caliphate. As long as the ulema will support the extremist and terrorist organisations in the name of jihad and caliphate, the US and Israel will continue to ruin and destroy Islamic countries. On The Importance Of Moderation

By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 28 January 20 One of the most common sayings in Japan is 'Hara Hachi Bu,' which is repeated before or after eating and means something like 'Fill your belly to 80 percent.' This principle of moderation not only reflects wisdom in dietary habits, but also symbolizes a broader philosophy of moderation in life. It teaches mindfulness, encouraging individuals to be in tune with their body's needs rather than succumbing to excess. The ethos of 'Hara Hachi Bu' illustrates the interconnectedness of health, wellness, and the pursuit of Ikigai, highlighting that a conscious approach to consumption can lead to greater overall satisfaction and longevity. By the way, according to the Japanese, everyone has an Ikigai—what a French philosopher might call a raison d’être. Some people have found their Ikigai, while others are still looking, though they carry it within them. For many, criticizing and condescending might be an Ikigai strong enough to keep them alive. It's their Zehani Ghiza (mental nourishment!) to maintain the celerity of mind. Rumi says in Ottoman Turkish, "Hayatının Bir Amacını Bul Ve Ona Göre Hareket Et" (Find a purpose of your life and then act upon it; it's one of his only nine surviving statements in pre-medieval Turkish often translated from Pahlavi). Coming back to moderation, it's the key to a successful existence. We call it اعتدال (E'tidaal) in Urdu. The problem with all humans is that we tend to cross the limits in whatever we do. Moderation is a great virtue in Islam. The concept and virtue of moderation in Islam can be traced back to the Quran, where Allah says: وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَـٰكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا لِّتَكُونُوا۟ شُهَدَآءَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ ٱلرَّسُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيدًا “And it is thus that We appointed you to be the community of the middle way so that you might be witnesses to all humankind and the Messenger might be a witness to you…” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:143) But moderation comes only after one learns how to balance things in life. To quote, Raghupati Sahay 'Firaq' Gorakhpuri, "Har Saaz Se Hoti Nahin Ye Dhun Paida/ Hota Hai Bade Jatan Se Ye Gun Paida/ Meezaan-e-Nishaat-O-Gham Mein Sadiyon Tul Kar/ Hota Hai Hayaat Mein Tavazun Paida" (Not every instrument elicits this tune/ This quality comes only after rigorous practice and endeavours/ Tottering on the scale of happiness and sorrow for centuries/ Life develops a state of perfect balance). Remember, "Zindagi Mein Tavazun-O-E' Tidaal Ki Aamezish Ho Toh Insaan Khud-Ba-Khud Saleeqa Seekh Jaata Hai" (The right blend of moderation and balance creates good manners). ----- A regular columnist for New Age Islam, Sumit Paul is a researcher in comparative religions, with special reference to Islam. Mureed and Khalifa of Hazrat Shaikh Baha-ud-Deen Qadri. 3. Renowned as the 26th Sheikh of the Qadri order. 4. His shrine is within Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi. 5. The shrine opens on special occasions like Urs and Fatiha. ----- Bahre Ibrahim Hum Pe Nare Gham Gulzar Kar Bheek De Data Bhikhari Badshah Ke Vaaste “O Ocean of Ibrahim, turn our sorrows into blooming gardens, Grant alms, O Giver, For the sake of the king (SAW).” Hazrat Syed Ibrahim Irji, a revered Islamic scholar and Sufi saint, holds a prominent place in the spiritual and intellectual history of the Indian subcontinent. Known as "Irji" due to his ancestral connection with the place Iraj, his genealogy traces back to noble origins: Syed Ibrahim Irji, son of Hazrat Syed Moin, son of Syed Abdul Qadir, son of Syed Murtaza. His lineage reflects a legacy of spirituality and scholarship. Early Life and Education Hazrat Syed Ibrahim Irji was born in Iraj, a region that became synonymous with his name. From a young age, he exhibited a deep inclination towards Islamic sciences. He completed his traditional Islamic education under the guidance of Hazrat Sheikh Aleemuddin Muhaddith (Quddisa Sirruhu), mastering Sharia (Islamic law) and Tariqa (spiritual way). Seeking further enlightenment, he pursued the mystical sciences under Hazrat Sheikh Bahauddin Qadri Shattari (Quddisa Sirruhu), who also wrote the treatise Azkar-o-Ashghal later referred to as Risala Shattaria exclusively for him. Hazrat Syed Ibrahim was granted Khilafat (spiritual successorship) by Sheikh Bahauddin Qadri Shattari, marking him as a prominent spiritual leader. He became the 26th Imam and Sheikh-o-Tariqat of the Qadiriyya, Barkaatia, and Rizvia orders, further strengthening his influence in the spiritual domain. Intellectual and Spiritual Legacy Hazrat Syed Ibrahim was a beacon of intellectual and spiritual wisdom, excelling in both traditional and mystical knowledge. He was known for his ability to simplify complex theological and philosophical texts, making them accessible even to those with limited academic training. Historians and scholars, including Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dehlvi (Quddisa Sirruhu), have documented his unparalleled contributions. In his renowned book Akhbar-ul-Akhyar, Abdul Haq Dehlvi describes Hazrat Syed Ibrahim as an unmatched scholar and philosopher of his era. Despite the indifference and ignorance of some contemporaries, his dedication to scholarship and teaching remained steadfast. Hazrat Syed Ibrahim would often seclude himself to focus on his studies and writings, distancing himself from those who lacked sincerity in seeking knowledge. He shared his vast library only with devoted students. Many of his handwritten books, filled with valuable insights, were discovered after his passing, further highlighting his scholarly dedication. Prominent Disciples Among his notable disciples were Hazrat Nizam-ud-Deen Shah Bhikari (Kakori), Hazrat Sheikh Rukn-ud-Deen bin Abdul Quddoos, Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Hasan etc. These individuals carried forward his teachings and spiritual practices, ensuring that his legacy continued to illuminate the lives of future generations. A Memorable Incident One significant event exemplifies Hazrat Syed Ibrahim’s spiritual insight and wisdom. His disciple, Sheikh Rukn-ud-Deen bin Abdul Quddoos Gangohi, once requested him to attend the Urs of Khwaja Qutb-ud-Deen Bakhtiar Kaaki (may Allah have mercy on him) in Delhi. Instead of accompanying him, Hazrat Syed Ibrahim instructed Sheikh Rukn-ud-Deen to attend the gathering, perform Zeyarat, and focus on the spirituality of the saint. During the visit, Sheikh Rukn-ud-Deen witnessed a vision of Khwaja Qutb-ud-Deen Bakhtiar Kaaki expressing his displeasure with the disruptive practices during the event. Upon returning, Sheikh Rukn-ud-Deen shared his experience with Hazrat Syed Ibrahim, who smiled and affirmed the inappropriateness of such gatherings involving excessive music and distractions. This incident reflects Hazrat Syed Ibrahim's emphasis on sincerity and spirituality over ritualistic practices. Hazrat Syed Ibrahim Irji passed away on the 5th of Rabi-al-Thani, 953 AH (approximately 1546 CE). His shrine is situated within the sacred premises of the Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (Quddisa Sirruhu) in Delhi, a place of immense spiritual significance. Sacred Shrine Hazrat Syed Ibrahim Irji's blessed shrine is located in the sacred complex of Dargah Hazrat Sultan-ul-Mashaikh Mehboob-e-Ilahi Nizamuddin Auliya (may Allah have mercy on him) in Delhi. It rests at the feet of Hazrat Khwaja Abul Hasan Amir Khusrau (may Allah have mercy on him), reflecting a profound spiritual connection and reverence. The door to this sacred shrine often remains closed and is typically opened during special occasions such as Fatiha (prayers for the departed soul) and Urs (commemoration ceremonies). During these moments, devotees gather to offer their respects, recite prayers, and seek blessings from this revered site. His contributions to Islamic scholarship, his spiritual teachings, and his commitment to preserving and propagating the true essence of Islam continue to inspire countless followers to this day. Hazrat Syed Ibrahim Irji remains a guiding light for those seeking knowledge and spiritual growth. Rejoicing The Spirit Of 76th Republic Day Aspiring For A Powerful Nation

By Nava Thakuria, New Age Islam 28 January 2025 Defying all odds, including a boycott call by some armed militant outfits, the people of far eastern Bharat celebrated the 76th Republic Day unfurling the Tri-colour paying homage to the known and unknown martyrs of India’s Freedom Movement against the colonial British forces. Resentments against the governments in respective State capitals as well as in New Delhi, anti-India rhetoric and even the diktats from separatist militants could not deter in joining the celebrations aspiring for a powerful nation, which is definitely a Biswa Mitra (if not immediately can emerge as Biswa Guru), a guiding light for the human race with its legacy, culture and environment-friendly natures. The auspicious occasion passed peacefully except some unfounded reports of bomb blasts in the prehistoric city of Guwahati, which the authorities had out rightly rejected. Many areas of Imphal valley in Manipur looked deserted as the marketplaces were closed and a few people seemingly came outside their residences on 26 January 2025. As the Kartavya Path in the national capital witnessed a series of events showcasing the military might of Bharat along with the vibrant cultural heritage in the gracious presence of President Droupadi Murmu and her Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto, the respective Governors across the country unfurled the national flag at the State capitals. Most of the north-eastern States accorded the spirit of democracy, integrity and patriotism even though alerted with the anti-national statements issued by north-eastern armed insurgents who have been waging a war against New Delhi for various homelands. The militant groups, who once unanimously dictated the residents to boycott R-Day and Independence Day functions, have now split to different factions even in urging the people to avoid the celebration. Manipur-based six banned outfits under the banner of 'Coordination Committee' called for a total shutdown on 26 January starting from midnight to 6 pm to boycott any celebration related to R-Day. The outlawed organizations namely Kangleipak Communist Party, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, PREPAK-Pro, Revolutionary People’s Front, and United National Liberation Front (UNLF) also criticized New Delhi to convert Manipur into ‘a militarized state’ and nurturing ‘proxy insurgency’ to divide & suppress the voice of indigenous people. In a separate statement, another banned outfit named Socialist Revolutionary Party Kangleipak imposed a shutdown on Sunday from 4 am to 5 pm asking the people to boycott the celebrations in Manipur. On the other hand, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland/Government of the People’s Republic of Nagaland and the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) called for boycotting relevant functions in Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, where they imposed a general strike from 1 am to 6 pm on Sunday. Opposing the ‘colonial Indian Republic Day’, the outfits asked all political & non-political, community organizations and freedom-aspiring people to refrain from attending any celebration during the period. However, essential services like healthcare, electricity, fire-brigade, water supplies, media, etc were exempted from the shutdown. Denouncing the boycott call by the militant outfits, a forum of nationalist citizens appealed to everyone settling in the region to observe the R-Day unfurling the Tri-colour in both individual and community level observation. Patriotic Peoples’ Front Assam also reminded that a number of brave-hearts including Kanaklata Barua, Mukunda Kakoti, Kushal Konwar, Tilak Deka, Bhogeswari Phukanani, Nidhanu Rajbangshi, Kamala Miri, Lerela Boro, Madan Barman, Rauta Kachari, Hemoram Patar, Gunavi Bordoloi, Thagi Sut, Balaram Sut, etc laid down their lives for the honour of Tri-colour, adding that the national flag does not belong to the government alone (but the citizens of Bharat) and hence it should be a moral responsibility for each and every Bharatiya to pay tribute to the martyrs honouring the Tri-colour on R-Day and I-Day. Assam Guv Lakshman Prasad Acharya, while unfurling the national flag and paying tributes to the martyrs, commented that the State government is committed to maintain the law & order situation with effective actions against social evils like drug abuse, child marriage and human trafficking. In the trouble torn Manipur, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale unfurled the Tri-colour in Imphal West locality, where he emphasized on nurturing the unity and responsibilities among the citizens of Bharat. Focusing on 75 years of enactment of the Constitution, Sarkaryavah Hosabale opined that every Bharatiya should strengthen and develop the nation not only a responsibility but a fundamental duty too. Reciting the story of Lord Ram, who sacrificed his fundamental right to the throne in Ayodhya with an aim to fulfill fundamental duty by accepting a 14-year exile, exemplifies the precedence of duty over rights. Highlighting the spirit, Guwahati-based popular news channel Da News Plus organized a talk show after saluting the national flag at its premises, where new generation Indians were appealed to reaffirm their understanding about the Vedic knowledge system while accepting the modern scientific discourses. Moderated by its chief editor Professor Dayananda Pathak and joined by journalist turned academician Paresh Baishya and this writer, the live discussion also comprised other pertinent issues including due electoral and diplomatic reforms in India. While it was reiterated that the people remain the ultimate authority of a democracy, they should also possess the duty & responsibility in accordance with various constitutional rights. At the same time, the electorates should get a proper road map for selecting their representatives to the Parliament, legislative assembly, local urban & rural bodies with distinctive mandates with a high participation. Moreover, the status of diplomats representing India across various nations must be decided on the basis of national interests and definitely not to fulfil any criteria imposed by international forums like the Commonwealth. The participants were unanimous in their views that New Delhi should engage a diplomatic mission to cater the needs & aspirations of billion-plus Indians first for asserting its identity as a sovereign nation. ---- Nava Thakuria is an official representative of PEC in South & Southeast Asia URL: https://www.newageislam.com/current-affairs/rejoicing-spirit-republic-day-nation/d/134450 New Age Islam, Islam Online, Islamic Website, African Muslim News, Arab World News, South Asia News, Indian Muslim News, World Muslim News, Women in Islam, Islamic Feminism, Arab Women, Women In Arab, Islamophobia in America, Muslim Women in West, Islam Women and Feminism

When Did India Get Independence? In 2014 Or 22 January 2024

By Ram Puniyani for New Age Islam 27January 2025 Kangana Ranaut, the actor and MP was the first who spelt her understanding about India’s Independence when she stated that India became Independent in 2014; when Modi came to power. It was the first time that BJP got majority on its own strength. The hint was India was a slave country earlier; slave of ‘foreign rulers’ or was ruled by Governments which wanted to pursue the path of secular, democratic values. She meant that with Modi in power; full Hindu Nationalism will be unleashed. Not to be left behind recently another actor Vikrant Massey claimed that India got freedom in 2014, when ‘we’ got free expression of Hindu identity. To cap it all now the new date has been thrown up for the real freedom of the country by none other than RSS Sarsanghchalak, Mohan Bhagwat. While addressing in Indore he stated that 22 January 2024 was the day when we got Independence, “the date should be celebrated as "Pratishtha Dwadashi" as the true independence of India, which had faced "Parachakra" (enemy attack) for several centuries, was established on this day. The ideals and life values presented by Lord Ram, Krishna, and Shiva are included in the "self of India" and it is not at all that these are the Gods of only those people who worship them, he said. Bhagwat further said that the invaders destroyed the temples of the country so that the "self" of India also perishes. Projecting Ram Temple Pran Pratishta (Life installation) as the panacea of all our social problems he further added, "I used to ask those people that despite talking about socialism after independence in 1947, giving slogans of 'Garibi Hatao' (eradicate poverty) and worrying about people's livelihood all the time, where did India stand in the 1980s and where have countries like Israel and Japan reached?" The RSS chief said he used to tell these people that "India's livelihood path goes through the entrance of Ram temple and they should keep this in mind." Bhagawat's constructs are taking the story further and he wants to legitimize the criminal act of demolishing the Babri Mosque. Overarching the diverse cultural and religious traditions he wants to present only Lord Rama as the sole cultural symbol of this country. Even in the broad spectrum of Hinduism there are Lord Shiva, Lord Shrikrishna, Goddess Kali among others. Then we have the glorious traditions of Lord Mahavir, Gautam Buddha, Nanak and Kabir as the part of the great canvass, which India is. While the population genetics studies clearly show that Aryans were also the migrants, before them there were other natives here. And diverse people coming here can either be seen merely as aggressors walking the path of ways of Kingdoms. Chola Kings ruled in Srilanka, or Alexander tried his best to win over India. Different dynasties and people like Shaka, Hun, Ghulams, Khalji and Mughal rules were ‘part’ of the subcontinent. This is seen by sectarians as an attack on ‘our’ civilization while those who struggled for Independence of India from the British saw it as an intermixing of historical process; leading to the foundational diversity of the country. Jawaharlal Nehru most aptly describes it as, “some ancient palimpsest on which layer upon layer of thought and reverie had been inscribed, and yet no succeeding layer had completely hidden or erased what had been written previously.” As per RSS chief the aggressors wanted to demolish our soul by demolishing our temples. The temple destructions in Medieval and late early India were purely for the sake of power and wealth. The earlier attacks and conversions of Jain and Buddha places of worship were due to reaction from Brahminism. To demonize particularly the Muslim rulers, this formulation of temple destructions and many other myths have been propped up. Two examples will suffice while Aurangzeb destroyed nearly 12 temples; he also gave donations to nearly hundred Hindu temples. The eleventh century ruler of Kashmir, Raja Harshdev, appointed a special officer to uproot the idols of Gods and Goddesses, which were made of Gold and Silver or studded with diamonds and rubies. Bhagwat and his ilk see the country through a narrow Brahminical prism. It was during the colonial period that Indian boundaries emerged. It was the Colonial period which was a period of slavery. The previous conquers who ruled settled here and became a part of our national and cultural life. The British ‘Policy of Divide and rule’ planted the notion of earlier rulers being the plunderers and temple destroyers. The previous rulers who ruled did not take away our wealth outside, while the British plunder project led to impoverishment of India. The slavery was imposed by the British and the struggle against them was the freedom movement which culminated in Independence on 15th August 1947, with our Constitution being implemented on 26 January 1950. Those deviating from this date are the followers of nationalism under the garb of religion, who are uncomfortable with the values of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity of the Constitution which emerged from the freedom struggle. He needs to introspect what the countries like Japan and Israel achieved through demolishing old holy places and building the one’s of their religion. He also needs to know that after the Ram Temple movement has picked up India’s growth and unity has seen a downward trend. There is a consistent fall in the various indices related to health, nutrition, educational status with increase in poverty levels. The massive foundations for economic, educational, scientific and industrial prosperity were laid much before the divisive politics of Ram Temple got a boost in the decades of 1980 and 1990s. Bhagwat’s statement totally ignores the massive anti colonial movement. The reason for this is that those who stood for Hindu and Muslim nationalism were not the part of it. In a way his statement is a great insult to all those who sacrificed their live for the freedom of the country from the clutches of colonialism, the period of our slavery.
