Tolerance and Patience: Fundamental Teachings of Islam

Sahafat (Mumbai)

(Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi, NewAgeIslam.com)

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “La Ilaha Illah”. All the members of the delegation got infuriated to hear this. Abu Ta’alib said, O’ my nephew; tell some other words (Kalma) as this Kalma gets your tribe disturbed and worried. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, my dear uncle I cannot repeat any other Kalma even if they give me the wealth of the whole world. This made them furious. They said they will also make fun of his God. It was here that this Ayat no. 108 of Sura al Enam was descended’ “And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allah, lest they insult Allah wrongfully without knowledge.”

This presents a brilliant example of patience and tolerance. On various occasions idols have been described in bad taste, such as, “these idols and their worshippers both are weak” and “You and the idols you worship are the fuel of hell”. So what does tolerance mean if idols are called evil in these Ayats. This has been answered in Rooh ul Ma’ani in detail. These Ayats do not talk of castigating the gods (idols) rather it says, evil begets evil. So it does not go against the values of tolerance. --Sahafat (Mumbai) (Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi, NewAgeIslam.com)
