He was connected to was Chishti Order, and he was brought up in an environment that stressed both the acquisition of knowledge in worldly matters and attainments for the hereafter. His former tutor during his formative years was his father, Hazrat Syed Shah Sultan Ahmed Danapuri. After the death of his father, Fani was brought up by his paternal grandfather Hazrat Syed Shah Ghulam Hussain Danapuri.
Hazrat Fani had received extensive education in religious as well as secular subjects. His spiritual mentor was his uncle Hazrat Syed Shah Qamruddin Munemi who introduced him to the Chishti Khizriya Monami order. With great dedication to his studies and an innate spiritual aptitude, Fani gained Ijazah, or spiritual license, under his uncle.
Hazrat Fani was under heavy influence from the notable Sufi saints, such as Hazrat Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, Hazrat Baba Fariduddij Ganjshakar, Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya, and Hazrat Shaikh Sharfuddin Ahmed Yahya Maneri, whose spiritual perception coined his understanding of the Divinity. His lifestyle as a Sufi was one of extreme devotion, prayer, and reflection, namely the purification of the heart, submission to God, and practice of love and humility.
Spiritual Journey and Institution of the Khanqah in Gaya
Hazrat Fani went on a long and tiresome journey to Mecca on foot when he was just 28 years of age. The five-year journey proved to be not only a test but also a spiritual pilgrimage that made him decisively steadfast for the purpose of Sufism. After returning from Mecca, Fani was spiritually guided by Prophet Muhammad Mustafa Sallalahu Alayhi Ta'Aala Wassalam to go back to India and become the Qutub (spiritual axis) of Gaya. In 1850, Fani went to Gaya and started spreading the teaching of Sufism and infusing the atmosphere with peace, love, and devotion to God.
The coming of Hazrat Fani into Gaya marked a new age of spiritual transformation in this region. He established his Khanqah (spiritual centre) at Ramsagar in Gaya, from where he emerged as an important figure in the region. Khanqah was a centre of spiritual education, from where the seekers of all walks of life came to learn about Sufi mysticism, and perform their prayers and meditations and seek proper guidance for eternal light. Fani’s teachings were inclusive, emphasizing the oneness of God and the unity of all spiritual paths.
The Razzaqi Sufi Order and Its Legacy
One of the most significant contributions of Hazrat Syed Shah Ata Hussain Fani was the establishment of the Razzaqi Order, which grew out of his own spiritual lineage. His followers, referred to as Razzaqi Sufis, continued his message throughout India and beyond, carrying the word of love, devotion, and spiritual awakening. Hazrat Fani's impact was extensive; there were 60,000 active followers all over Asia. Some of these followers were rather influential figures in their own right as Sufis, continuing the fundamental principles of Fani's spiritual philosophy.
Prophet Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa Sallalahu Alayhi Ta'Aala Wassalam conferred on Fani the title Abdul Razzaq (Servant of the Provider) during a spiritual encounter in Medina, marking him as a spiritually elevated figure. Coupled with other titles such as Shah-e-Ata, Qutb-e-Gaya, and Murshid-e-Aala, Hazrat Fani solidified himself as one among the most respected saints in the Sufi direction of his time.
The Razzaqi Order is thriving until this day, with most of its descendants playing an active role today in the propagation of his teachings. The legacy of Hazrat Syed Shah Ata Hussain Fani also lives through some of his literary contributions, most of which are still central to the field of South Asian Sufism studies.
Literary Contribution
The literary contribution of Hazrat Fani was quite broad and varied, covering prose and poetry works. His works are a wholesome blend of mystical wisdom, philosophical reflections and spiritual insights. Among his notable works is the Urdu travelogue "Hidayat-ul-Musafireen" which has remained celebrated for its depth and spiritual guidance. His Persian "Kifat-ul-Arfeen" and "Kanzul Ansaab" again established him as a scholar of Sufism. His Masnavi and Sher composed during his mystical verse writing, continue to be read and revered by the practitioners and scholars of Sufism.
Hazrat Fani’s poetry, marked by intense spiritual yearning, often delves into themes of divine love, the soul’s journey toward God, and the purification of the self. His verses express the Sufi ideal of transcending the ego and seeking union with the Divine through love and devotion. One of his famous couplets (sher) beautifully encapsulates this sentiment:
"Sajda Ho Tare Dar Pe Marā Us Ghaḍī Qubūl,
Ro Ro Ke Apne Ashk Se Jis Dam Vuzū Kareñ,
Sharminda Huuñ Gunāh Se Apne Maiñ Is Qadar,
Kyā Chashm-E-Pur-Gunah Ko Terī Dū-Badū Kareñ."
Translation:
"My prostration at Your threshold was accepted in that moment,
When I performed ablution with my tears,
I am ashamed of my sins, so much so,
How can my sinful eyes be worthy of Your divine gaze?"
This couplet reflects the Sufi sentiment of deep humility before God, identifying the purity of divine mercy that accepts the devotee despite the faults contained within them.
