The Whole Caboodle Of Karmas Is Sheer Garbage

By Sumit Paul, New Age Islam 18 June 2025 Why are superstitious people in India linking the recent plane crash tragedy in Ahmedabad to the passengers' collective karmas, lucky and unlucky numbers and the uncanny significance of the seat 11A on an aircraft? Kiran Bedi, an apparently intelligent woman, put this disaster down to the karmas of the passengers who died en masse. Rubbish, to say the least. If collective karmas of all those passengers, including kids and infants, worked in a confluence to cause this mishap, how on earth could one of the passengers on the ill-fated aircraft survive? Was his karma of different nature; immune to any deaths and disasters? Why didn't collective karmas or the fate of other unlucky passengers impact his destiny? The whole caboodle of karmas is sheer garbage. So is astrology. The dynamics of life and death are unpredictable and forever unexplained. Astrology is a hindsight insight. It's wisdom in retrospect. Humans can hardly predict anything in advance. Astrology is an after-event mumbo-jumbo. Someone vaguely predicted a few months ago that there could be plane crash/s in 2025. With this crash, astrology and its innumerable practitioners got a booster. Astrology is all guesswork and surmising. The Law of Karma in Eastern Philosophy is the most weird esoteric theory that links a person's present and future to the Karmas of his/her past life. How can it be logical? No rational person can accept it. If you've no memory of your last birth (if at all it exists) and no knowledge of the karmas you indulged in, how can those deeds influence and regulate your present existence? For accountability in this birth, there must be continual, seamless and conscious memory of the deeds of one's past life. Does anyone of us, even Hindus, Jainas or Buddhists, have any conscious memory of what we did before this birth? Since we've no answers to many enigmas related to life and death, we create bogus metaphors and hoaxes, viz, past life Karmas, Heaven, Hell, Afterlife and the biggest of them: god, that has created endless mayhem right from the advent of human civilization. Coming back to those who died in a plane crash, June 12 was their bad day and that's it. Former CM of Gujarat Vijay Rupani was killed despite his lucky number being 1206 cannot and shouldn't be explained numerologically. A so-called lucky number could be fatal for the same person. There's no assurance or uniformity in any aspect of astrology whether it's the study of a person's natal chart (Kundali or Janmpatrika in Hindi and Zaicha, زاﻳﭽﻪ , in Persian), Saamudrik Shastra (palmistry) or numerology. Everything is uncertain and unpredictable. No one knows when fate strikes and how intensely and forcefully it will strike. Remember, man appoints, fate disappoints. Humans are forever steeped in obscurantism and fatalism. Moreover, we all have enough time to indulge in all these preposterous pastimes and pursuits. ----- A regular columnist for New Age Islam, Sumit Paul is a researcher in comparative religions, with special reference to Islam.
