Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan Marharvi (1927–1995 CE) was a distinguished Islamic scholar, Hafiz, Qari, Mufti, and Sufi saint of the Qadiriyya Barkatiya order, revered for his spiritual charisma, intellectual prowess, and commitment to the Maslak-e-Ala Hazrat. Born into a noble lineage tracing back to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), his life exemplified the synthesis of religious scholarship, Sufi mysticism, and social responsibility. According to Hazrat Sharf-e-Millat Syed Muhammad Ashraf Miyan Marehravi, the son of Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan, his birth was marked by divine signs. Born on 10 Shaban-ul-Muazzam, 1345 Hijri (13 February 1927 CE) in the household of Hazrat Syed Shah Bashir Haider Ale Iba Marharvi in Marhra Sharif, he emerged enveloped in a natural membrane with a crown-like formation on its upper part. The midwife broke her bangle to cut this membrane, revealing the newborn with a radiant presence, signifying his destined spiritual eminence. This extraordinary birth narrative underscores the reverence surrounding his early life and sets the stage for his later contributions.
Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan belonged to a distinguished lineage. His father, Hazrat Syed Shah Bashir Haider Ale Iba Qadri, was the son of Hazrat Syed Shah Haider Hussain Qadri and the grandson of Khatimul Akabir Hazrat Syed Shah Ale Rasool Ahmad. This noble ancestry connected him to the revered Barkatiya family, known for its contributions to Islamic scholarship and Sufism. His title, “Ahsanul Ulama” (The Best of Scholars), reflected his scholarly excellence and spiritual stature within this lineage.
Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan’s education was comprehensive, blending traditional Islamic learning with modern disciplines. He memorized the Holy Quran under the tutelage of his mother and Hafiz Abdur Rahman Marharvi. His initial Urdu education was provided by Munshi Saeeduddin Sahab, while he studied English under Master Samiuddin Sahab, achieving proficiency in both writing and speaking the language. His formal Islamic education, the Dars-e-Nizami curriculum, was acquired from eminent scholars, including his maternal uncle Taj-ul-Ulama Syed Shah Aulad-e-Rasool Muhammad Miyan, his elder brother Syed-ul-Ulama Hazrat Syed Shah Ale Mustafa Muhammad Miyan, Khalil-ul-Ulama Hazrat Allama Mufti Khalil Ahmad Khan, Hazrat Allama Maulana Ghulam Jilani, and Hazrat Allama Maulana Mufti Hashmat Ali Khan Pilibhiti.
His spiritual training in the Sufi path was guided by his maternal grandfather, Mujaddid-e-Barkatiyat Hazrat Syed Shah Ismail Hasan, known as Shahji Miyan. This rigorous training instilled in him the qualities of humility, piety, and devotion, shaping him into a leading figure of the Qadiriyya Barkatiya order.
Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan was an exemplary Hafiz, Qari, Alim, and Mufti. His mastery of the Quran was such that it remained etched in his heart until his final breath. He recited numerous Mehraabs (complete recitations of the Quran), including two Shabinas in Mumbai alone, demonstrating his devotion to the Quran. His inherited qualities from his ancestors included knowledge of Shariat, divine gnosis (Ma’rifat), contemplation, humility, simplicity, intellectual brilliance, generosity, and magnanimity. He distanced himself from political and governmental influences, emulating his ancestor Sahib-e-Barakatullah, and declined meetings with prominent ministers and governors, maintaining his spiritual independence.
Despite his extensive Khanqahi and missionary engagements, Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan authored several significant works, reflecting his scholarly depth and poetic inclination. His notable works include:
● Ahle Allah fi Tafseer Ghairullah, Dawa-e-Dil
● Madah-e-Murshid
● Ahle Sunnat ki Awaaz
● A detailed account of missionary tours in 1973 CE
Additionally, he wrote numerous articles and exhibited a refined taste for poetry, a trait shared with his ancestors. His literary contributions enriched the intellectual and spiritual discourse within the Ahle Sunnat tradition.
Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan’s spiritual prowess was evident in his ability to heal through divine means. His amulets were remarkably effective, relieving afflictions instantly by the command of Allah. He possessed the ability to summon and reprimand jinns and evil spirits, as illustrated by an incident in Badaun Sharif, where he expelled a malevolent spirit attacking a disciple’s household in the form of monkeys. His sister, Syeda Zahida Khatoon, noted his childhood seriousness and care for animals, reflecting his innate spiritual maturity and compassion.
His exemplary devotion to his parents, particularly his mother, is well-documented. He ensured her comfort by placing water for her every night, carefully closing the jug’s spout to prevent contamination. A poignant incident illustrates his obedience: when instructed by his mother to stand upside down on a stool, he remained in that position for hours until she permitted him to move, demonstrating unparalleled respect and compliance. This incident serves as a model of filial piety for future generations.
Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan’s intellectual and political acumen was evident during the partition of India. He co-founded the Jamaat-e-Aaliya Markaz-e-Ahle Sunnat, with Taj-ul-Ulama Hazrat Syed Shah Aulad-e-Rasool Muhammad Miyan as president, Syed-ul-Ulama Hazrat Syed Shah Ale Mustafa Syed Miyan as secretary, and himself as vice-president. The organization aimed to address the political and social challenges faced by the Muslim community during the partition. His support for the political stance of Sher Besha-e-Ahle Sunnat Hazrat Allama Mufti Hashmat Ali Khan Pilibhiti, particularly in endorsing the fatwa Ajmal Anwaar-e-Raza, highlighted his alignment with the faction opposing Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s leadership. His written endorsement, dated 22 Safar-ul-Muzaffar 1365 Hijri, underscores his political awareness and commitment to the Ahle Sunnat cause.
Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa Haider Hasan Miyan was a staunch follower of Mujaddid-e-Azam Ala Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Barelvi, whom he referred to as “Raza-e-Ale Rasool” and “My Ala Hazrat.” He also held deep reverence for Mufti-e-Azam Hind Mustafa Raza Khan Barelvi. His advice to his son, Rafiq-e-Millat Syed Najeeb Haider Noori, to remain steadfast on Maslak-e-Ala Hazrat, emphasized its continuity with the paths of Shah Barkatullah, Ghaus-e-Azam, Imam-e-Azam, and Siddiqi Akbar. He rejected any deviation from this path, considering it a betrayal of his spiritual pledge.
On 21 January 1946 CE, he married Syeda Mahboob Fatima Naqvi, daughter of Syed Ishaq Naqvi. They had six sons, Syed Muhammad Jamil, Syed Muhammad Khalid (both deceased in childhood), Amine Millat Hazrat Syed Amin Miyan, Syed Muhammad Ashraf, Syed Muhammad Afzal, and Syed Muhammad Najeeb Haider, and one daughter, Sayyeda Samina. Before his passing, he gave clear indications of his departure, reciting a Manqabat, listening to the Quran, and advising steadfastness on Maslak-e-Ala Hazrat. His final moments, reciting “Ya Allah, Ya Rahman, Ya Rahim,” reflected his spiritual readiness.
