Asra Nomani Defends Surveillance by NYPD, Says Some Muslims Use Religion as Cover

by Catherine Herridge

Asra Nomani talks of Muslims misuse of their religion and religious teachings. She defends NYPD surveillance against them in the following interview to Catherine Herridge.
“I think that there is a movement in America right now to claim this concept of Islamophobia, to say that people are hating on Islam," she said. "Let's be honest, there are people that do hate on Islam. But I think that (Police Commissioner) Ray Kelly and the New York Police Department have been targeted in this larger campaign to try to show that people are picking on Muslims.”
The New York Police Department's controversial surveillance program involved efforts to infiltrate mosques and Muslim communities on college campuses to gather intelligence on potential threat. News of the secret program has sparked strong reactions, both negative and positive.
Nomani said the Muslim community should take charge: “I think we would be better served by being more proactive rather than defensive.”

Violence, Mores and Morals

by Amina Jilani
Amina Jilani’s article shows how people of minority communities as well had taken part in the independence war of Pakistan. He writes:
“I relayed the news on to colleagues and students at the cafeteria table. Some looked glumly at their plates but, a minute or two later, normal cheerful chatter resumed.” So wrote friend Pervez Hoodbhoy in this newspaper on March 5, in an op-ed titled “Run for your life”.
What was the news? That those men, who claim to be good Muslims, of the terrorist outfit Jundullah, had on February 28 executed 18 men, who had been cruelly dragged off a bus in Kohistan after being singled out because of their sect.

Pakistan Teetering on the Brink

by Ajit Kumar Singh

Research scholar Ajit Kumar Singh presents his research and shows the danger of Pakistan getting collapsed as a nation, if preventive action not taken soon. He srites:
Pakistan’s continuing engagement with the production and export of Islamist extremism and terrorism continued to produce a bloody blowback at home, with a total of at least 6,142 persons, including of 2,797 militants, 2,580 civilians and 765 Security Forces (SFs) personnel killed in 2011. However, even this worrying total constituted an improvement of 17.75 per cent over the preceding year. 7,435 persons, including 5,170 militants, 1,796 civilians and 469 SF personnel, had been killed in 2010.
While civilian and SF fatalities increased by whopping 43.65 and 63.11 percent, respectively, the steep decline (45.89 percent) in fatalities among the militants, primarily due to Islamabad’s approach of going soft on terror, was the sole reason for the decrease in overall fatalities through 2011.

Paramount Significance of the Behavioral Paradigms of the Quran

by Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Columnist and an Islamic scholar Muhammad Yunus of New Age Islam beautiful conveys the message of Quran and Islam regarding behaviour in following lines:
-        “Thus We have made you a justly balanced community, that you may be witnesses to humanity…” (2:143).
Traditionally, Muslims restrict their religiosity to the five pillars of faith, and are known globally for their symbolic devotional gestures, like the height or shape of mosque minaret, external grooming in terms of style of beard, turban, veiling of a woman; exactness in the articulation of Qur’anic words, or in body movement during salah etc. but the forgoing paradigms of conduct hardly appear in Islamic discourses or even in the religious grooming of youngsters at family level. The Qur’an expects the Muslims to act as a witness to humanity as the Prophet was a witness to his immediate audience. They can hardly represent the noble Prophet if they, among other things, remain ignorant of the basic behavioral norms expected of them as listed above. The Qur’an, however, is a reminder to all humanity (6:90, 12:104, 38:87, 68:52, 81:27) (zikrul lil ‘alamin) and as such its behavioral paradigms are for all people, and if the Muslims look around with open eyes, they will find countless people of other faiths, who never read the Qur’an or even loath it, excelling in compliance with the Qur’anic paradigms.

Some Learned from Fukushima. Did we?

by Pervez Hoodbhoy

Physics Professor and columnist gives a through study of the dangers of nuclear tragedy like Fukushima specially in Pakistan and makes them aware of the dangers by writing as follows:
The world is still worried about Fukushima. But does Pakistan worry? Even as explosions tore through the nuclear complex, the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Commission flatly declared that a Fukushima could never happen here. It issued the following vanilla guarantee: “Due to geographical differences between Pakistan and Japan, the likelihood that similar extreme natural events may occur in the vicinity of the country’s nuclear plants is quite small”.
Since two extreme natural events are unlikely to be similar, this is technically correct. But how would Pakistan deal with massive radioactive release after deliberate sabotage, a terrorist attack, equipment failure, or operator error? Floods and earthquakes have shown that the country can make piteous calls for international aid but lacks the capacity to deal with disasters, natural and human-caused.

There is a Muslim in Evolution Class

by Ahmad Ali

Ahmad Ali criticises Muslim mentality of not taking into account the scientific research and trying to prove their point without understanding Islam and Quran. He writes:
Clearly, we must move beyond stereotypical divisions of ‘faith vs. reason’. This is a complex issue because the issue here is clearly not about intelligence, scientific curiosity, hard work or open enquiry. These British Muslim students have enrolled and successfully qualified for these courses beating thousands of other applicants by exhibiting these very qualities. So calling these individuals backward or insulting their intelligence in any other similar type of fashion is wrong.
Having said that, I myself, as a British Muslim student studying medicine deeply disagrees with this walkout; protest cannot be the way we engage with new scientific discoveries. Our faith cannot be so weak and so fragile that it shatters at the first sight of apparent contradiction and doubt. It cannot be held hostage to reactionary forces that channel emotional frustrations at the state of Muslim power in the world. Instead of seeking head on confrontation; dialogue must be sought for.

Muslim Vote: A product of Political Labs, Not Polling Booths

by Zia Haq

Columnist Zia Haq goes in detail of the Muslim voting pattern in the recently held election in Indian states and calls it a product of political lab. He describes it in the following lines:
While Muslims may not vote as a bloc, they do, however, seem to generally agree on who not to vote. This is especially true when they see an emerging threat from communal politics of Hindu nationalists that threaten their identity. “When there is no such threat, they tend to focus on the bigger issues, such as education,” Hasan says.
The BJP, which represents Hindu cultural nationalism, has essentially come to serve as some kind of a reference point in India’s larger electoral equation for Muslims. Statistics do show that Muslims are not very keen on voting the BJP. This may have a role in reinforcing the notion of an “all-important Muslim vote”.
Muslims seldom back a lame horse.

Ziauddin Sardar On Social Change And Islamic Reform: Can A Minority Of Muslims In Europe Shape New Interpretations Of Islam?

by Ziauddin Sardar

Ziauddin Sardar’s article is a fabulous one on the subject of Muslims in Europe. He writes, “The basic assumptions can be identified as: stratification of society (in classes), and the influence of economics on all spheres of society. Other cultures do not (necessarily) subscribe to these notions of society and hence sociology. In Islam, for example, society is structured not on the basis of class but piety (so the ideal theory goes). Furthermore, in western sociology change is itself a positive value. Again, other cultures do not see change itself as good. In Islam, change is not a value in itself. It can be blameworthy or praiseworthy and the society is supposed to exert and work towards positive change in Islamic terms. The value of change as perpetual and permanent is equated with the idea of progress; which is by definition good. All progress is progress and innately good. The binary opposite of progress is stagnation.”

Fearing Death as an al-Qaeda Captive

by Robert Fowler

Columnist Robert Fowler’s experiences in the al-Qaeda captivity are frightening as well as the picture of how they work. He writes, “In December 2008, I was making my third trip to Niger as the United Nations Special Envoy, attempting to broker a peace between the government and Tuareg rebel factions in the north.
One Sunday, two weeks before Christmas, my colleague, Louis Guay, and I were returning to the capital, Niamey, in a UN vehicle when a truck passed us, slewed in front and forced us to a stop.
Two AK47s were aimed at the face of our driver, and within the blink on an eye all three of us were torn from our seats and thrown into the back of their truck. The whole grab took perhaps 40 seconds.
Thus began our 56-hour descent into hell, a 1,000km off-road nightmare into the middle of the Sahara desert. Twelve hours into that appalling journey, we stopped
for a couple of hours rest.

75 Years of Bhonsala Military School Militarising Minds, Hindutvaising the Nation

by Subhash Gatade

Columnist Subhash Gatade describes the frightening aspect of Bhonsala Military School’s Hindutvaising of the nation in the following words:
To bring about military regeneration of the Hindus and to fit Hindu youths for undertaking the entire responsibility for the defence of their motherland
To educate them in the 'Sanatan Dharma', and to train them "in the science and art of personal and national defence"
This training is meant for qualifying and fitting our boys for the game of killing masses of men with the ambition of winning victory with the best possible causalities (sic) of dead and wounded while causing the utmost possible to the adversary.

Gilgit Baltistan and Human Rights Violation

by Abdul Hamid Khan

Columnist and Chairman, Balawaristan National Front, Abdul Hamid Khan in his speech in UNHRC describes HR violations in Gilgit Balistan in the following words:
Human Rights abuses are widespread and common practice in Balawaristan (Pakistan and China occupied Gilgit Baltistan) since Pakistan took its control treacherously by using religion as its occupation tool. The absence or representation, Judiciary and free media and non access of Human Rights organizations and specially the failure of UN in implementation of its resolution have helped the Islamabad to hide its illicit practices.
The situation in Gilgit Baltistan is deteriorated, when about 20 Pakistani Army uniform terrorist killed 18 innocent Shia Muslims in Harban Kohistan Diamar border on 28th Feb. 2012 at about 8 AM after carefully checking their ID Cards issued by Pakistan. The terrorists stopped 4 passengers’ vehicles including one Bus and 3 other vehicle and asked the passengers to come down and show their identity. By identifying them as Shias and killed them on spot and some were handcuffed and slit their throats. Kohistan Police arrived on the spot but did not interfere this heinous act, after completion of this carnage the uniformed terrorist climbed on the mountain and disappeared.

Contemporary Muslims are in Need of Spirituality

by Tariq Ramadan

Columnist Tariq Ramadan, a scholar of Islamic studies writes on the necessity of Muslims spiritual teaching. He writes: “As far as Islam is concerned, it must be noted that Arab and Muslim majority societies are seriously lacking in spirituality. There is not a deficit of “religion” but of spiritual life. It can be encountered among Islamists, as well as among secularists and ordinary citizens. Religion refers to the framework, to the structure of ritual, to the rights and obligations of believers and, as such, lies at the heart of social and political debate. In the classical Islamic tradition, framework, reference and practices can — like all religions and spiritual traditions — be best seen in the light of their relation to meaning (here, to the Divine), to a conception of life and death, to the life of the heart and mind. Contemporary Islamic discourse has, however, too often lost its substance, which is that of meaning, of understanding ultimate goals and the state of the heart. Increasingly, it has been reduced to reactivity, preoccupied with the moral protection of the faithful, based on the reiteration of norms, rituals and, above all, prohibitions. But spirituality is not faith without religion; it is the quest for meaning and peace of heart as the essence of religion. Viewed in this light, Muslim majority societies are profoundly bereft of serenity, coherence and peace. The time has come for a spiritual and religious emancipation.”

Ram Puniyani on Terror Acts Investigations and RSS

by Ram Puniyani
Columnist Ram Puniyani explains the lackadaisical approach of the investigative agencies in the cases involving Hindu terrorists. He writes:
Supreme Court slammed the RSS Sarsanghchalak, Dr. Mohan Bhagwat for stating that Karkare had told him that he was under tremendous pressure to nail the RSS in unsolved cases of terror acts like, Malegaon, Ajmer, Samjhauta Express blast (Feb 28, 2012). As per the Chief of RSS, he knew Karkare well and Karkare had solicited his cooperation for solving these cases, and in the context of that had told him about the pressures being put on him.
One knows that Karkare was under pressure during that time. One also knows that the investigations in the acts of terror were leading nowhere and after every blast number of young Muslim boys were arrested, the blame was put on some affiliate of Lashkar, Al Qaeda etc. After Karkare took over as the chief of Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad, the things started moving. The turning point was the meticulous investigation by Karkare’s team which led to the unearthing of the motor cycle used in the Malegaon blast, the motor cycle belonged to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, the ex ABVP (RSS affiliate) activist, and the leads took the ATS to the whole set of terror group, which were called later as Saffron terrorism by the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

Muslims Elect Freedom From Fear

by Saif Shahin, New Age Islam

Saif Shahin, New Age Islam columnist takes a hard and factual look on the role played by the Muslims in the recent elections held in Uttar Pradesh and Indian state. He writes, “A new generation of Muslims is not content to be just kept alive; it expects a lot more from those it elects to office. Crucially, its expectations are not for Muslims as Muslims, but as citizens of a nation with which it is much more at ease than its parents and grandparents were. That is why tears of sympathy and promises of job quotas don’t cut too deep.
IN THE wild and eccentric world of Indian politics, there is one golden rule that always seems to hold: if you lose, blame it on Muslims. Mayawati trot down the well-worn path on Wednesday, holding the Muslims of Uttar Pradesh to account for the Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) humiliation in the recent assembly elections. Her logic: the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised the issue of Muslim reservation midway through the polls, polarising the electorate along communal lines and pushing Muslims into the arms of the Samajwadi Party (SP).”

Iran, Israel, the USA and World Capitalism

by John Reimann

Columnist John Reimann describes the present crisis between Iran and Israel in the following words:
US capitalism is committed to Israel because there is no other friendly regime in this all-important region upon which they can rely for any extended time
The turmoil over whether (or when) Israel and/or the US will attack Iran is far more than a conflict between the regimes of these nations, as important as that conflict may be; it contains within it, and it affects all the tensions and conflicts wracking world capitalism. This includes the ongoing economic crisis, the reordering of world capitalist powers, the rising revolutionary wave throughout the world, and even the environmental crisis and the issue of peak oil supplies.

Pakistan: Saleem Shahzad Case -Rule of Law or Rule of ISI?

by William Gomes

Columnist William Gomes mentions various investigation reports conducted to bring to light the murder of Saleem Shahzad. He writes, “Freedom of expression is one of the essential pre-requirements for the practice, protection and promotion of democracy. If we are to speak of a democratic Pakistan we need to examine, whether the media is free. Each and every day media professionals are facing threats of kidnapping or murder for telling the truth.
The truth about the life and death of media professionals in Pakistan is a shocking one. According to the New York based media watchdog ‘Committee to Protect Journalist’ (CPJ) from the year 1992 to 2012 42 journalists were killed in Pakistan. Of the reported 42 cases in 96 percent of the cases the perpetrators enjoyed complete impunity. Only in 4 percent of the cases were the perpetrators brought to justice. In murder cases involving the ISI the impunity was 100 percent.”

No Women on Bikes, Please!

by Ramzay Hayat

Columnist Ramzay Hayat has describes as to how women are being treated in the Muslim countries on the name of religion. He writes:
No rocket science needed to realise that the only way to save the bodies and souls of our brothers and sisters is to segregate the sexes completely — a feat so gloriously achieved, howsoever briefly, by our brother Taliban during their golden rule in Afghanistan
The orange-clad biker flew by me, like a solar flare, as I turned right on to the lower Mall. Refusing to believe what I appeared to have seen, shortly when I encountered the same biker tanking up at the petrol pump next to the Government College hostel, my fears were confirmed — it was a girl solo-riding a motorcycle. She was turning heads just doing her thing — not in Rome, Rio or any other hotbed of sin but right here in our holy city by the Ravi, where even simple pleasures like kite flying are banned. ‘Girls gone wild’, a la Lahore? Surely, no biker babes are to be tolerated in the Islamic Republic which — forget the original secular vision of Jinnah — today stands reincarnated in the image of Ziaul Haq?

Burn the Burqa, and the Beard

Burn the Burqa, and the Beard
by Saif Shahin, New Age Islam

New Age Islam columnist Saif Shahin has taken up an issue most misunderstood in
the Muslim community. This brilliant piece explains the issue in the following words;
pronouncements of Muslimness. You spot a woman in a burqa anywhere in the
“FOR some time now, the burqa and the beard have been the most telling
Muslim just yet, but the luxurious untrimmed ones, particularly when accompanied
world and you know that she is a Muslim. Beards are not quite as exclusively
by a clean upper lip, are close to becoming so.
There is nothing essentially Islamic about either of them. The Quran does not make it mandatory for women to wear the burqa: it simply asks all Muslims, men and women, to dress modestly. Nor does it insist on beards for men. The rationale often cited is that Prophet Muhammad used to sport a beard, and hence it is Sunnah to do so. But Sunnah is supposed to be what made the Prophet distinct, and his beard certainly didn’t. Even Abu Lahb and Abu Jahl, his biggest enemies, are known to have sported beards. In any case, many bearded Muslims care little about a number of other things the Prophet did, distinctive or not.”

IHEU reminds Human Rights Council of Churches’ Failure to Protect Children

by Roy Brown

Columnist Roy Brown in his speech in the United Nations Human Rights Commission highlights the pathetic condition of the children and writes, “We will be speaking in more detail under agenda item 4 about one particular form of child abuse that has become prevalent in many parts of Africa – namely accusations of witchcraft and demonic possession against children by priests and pastors of evangelical churches; accusations that are having catastrophic consequences for the children concerned, often resulting in the torture or death of the victims.
Our second point relates to States’ obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child to file full reports on their responsibilities under the Convention every five years, yet we note with concern that several States have failed to fully honour that obligation. We would cite just one example: it is now 20 years since the Holy See filed their last report.”

What’s Inside Muslim Minds?

by Ishtiaq Ahmed

Columnist Ishtiaq Ahmed in his article, “What’s Inside Muslim Minds?” writes, “Multiple meanings and interpretations of Islam are possible. The two main interpretative approaches are those of the apologists who strive to reconcile Islam with modernity and the Islamists who fiercely oppose it
John Locke famously postulated that the human mind is a tabula rasa...a clean slate... with nothing written on it. Whatever is fed to the human mind become its frame of reference and a source of values and beliefs. Hence what is in the mind is what has gone into it.
With regard to the doctrine of jihad, the author shows that it has multiple meanings and not just holy war. Primarily it means a “struggle against unbelievers to convert them to Islam” (pg 104). It includes peaceful persuasion as well as the use of force. The former is considered the greater jihad and the latter smaller jihad. “

The Classical Sharia Law of Islam – a Western Perspective: the Diabolic Face of Islam

by Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

New Age Islam columnist Muhammad Yunus writes, “The truth remains, scores of rulings of the Classical Sharia Law are in direct conflict with the Quranic paradigms. Hence a recent article posted on this website on the subject referenced below concludes: “It is time that the Muslim elite and leadership put their act together to achieve a gigantic paradigm leap - from the Classical Sharia Law of Islam to a Modern Islamic Law (Sharia), accommodating Western secular values - within the broader framework of the Qur’an. Their complacence and inaction may lend strong credence to Khaled Abou El Fadl’s agonizing concern: "Is it possible that the day will come when ours will be designated a "vanished civilization."”

What Dr Hoodbhoy got Wrong

by Danielle Sharaf

Danielle Sharaf writes, “This essay deliberately excludes Hindus, Christians, and Parsis. The reason: these communities were never enthused about India’s partition (even though some individual members pretended to be)…
While Dr Hoodbhoy painted a factual picture on the general state of affairs, he conveniently made some very disturbing assumptions on behalf of people, that to date, are fighting for their right of “Pakistaniyat” just as Shias or Ahmadis, thanks to the Pakistan studies books we were fed on.
With all due respect sir, I expected better of you.

OIC Should See the Difference between Promoting Homosexuality and Fighting for the Human Rights of Gay People

by Roy Brown

Columnist Roy Brown in his speech at U N says, “We deplore however the opposition expressed by some member states to the panel discussion on these issues to be held here on 7th March.[2] These states are either unaware of the genetic and biological basis for differences in sexual orientation or are prepared to ignore such evidence for religious reasons. No doubt they also wish to shield their own appalling human rights records from too much scrutiny.
The opposition to the discussion expressed by the OIC is a timely reminder that, for them, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights do not apply universally.”

The Finest Hour of Bangabandhu

The Finest Hour of Bangabandhu
by Syed Badrul Ahsan
Columnist Syed Badrul Ahsan says Bangabandhu’s finest hour was when he spoke to millions of listeners at the Race Course in Dhaka on March 7, 1971. He writes, “IT was his finest hour.
As Bangaban-dhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman rose to speak before the million people gathered at the Race Course in Dhaka, indeed before the seventy five million people of Bangladesh on March 7, 1971, something of the electric was in the air. Over the preceding few days, reports and rumours had been making the rounds about an impending declaration of independence by the man whose party, the Awami League, had secured a clear majority of seats (167 out of a total of 313) in Pakistan's national assembly at the general elections of December 1970.
What should have been a journey to power as Pakistan's prime minister on Mujib's part had by early March 1971 been transformed into a movement for Pakistan's eastern province to prize itself out of the state created through the division of India in 1947. The reasons were all out there. They had to do with the intrigues which had already been set in motion to thwart the assumption of power at the centre by the Awami League.”

A Pakistani Modernity

by Rafia Zakaria

Columnist Rafia Zakaria writes, “Pakistan was to be a modern Muslim state, a country where democratic and Islamic values gelled to produce a polity that felt no discomfort with either its religious identity or its democratic one.
The generation that awaited it with hushed anticipation saw no confusion in the recipe; their leaders were the likes of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Maulvi Chiragh Ali, Nazir Ahmed — brave men with a clear vision for South Asian Muslims.
They had fought the decrepit ignorance that kept Muslims submerged in old ways in the name of tradition; they believed in the necessity of making inroads with modern education and scientific knowledge. The modern state they pined for in those early and middling decades of the 19th century did not yet exist, but they could see it, imagine it with great accuracy as the repository of free minds that would engage the novel, promote the revolutionary.”
