Shia Cleric Maulana Javed Haider Zaidi: Surveys of Religious Sites a Threat to India’s Unity

By Shia Cleric Maulana Javed Haider Zaidi 3 December 2024 Prominent Shia cleric Maulana Javed Haider Zaidi has strongly opposed the ongoing surveys of religious sites, stating that such actions pose a threat to India’s communal harmony and the secular fabric of the nation. Expressing discontent over the recent surveys of mosques and Dargahs, including incidents in Sambhal and Ajmer, Maulana Zaidi appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government to intervene immediately to prevent further discord. "Surveys Destabilizing Social Harmony" Highlighting the potential repercussions, Maulana Zaidi warned that targeting religious sites repeatedly under the guise of surveys could lead to civil unrest in the country. “The surveys are being used as a tool to single out a particular community, which can tarnish India’s global reputation and further polarize the society,” he said. "Ajmer Dargah: A Symbol of Unity" Referring to the revered shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer, Maulana Zaidi underscored its significance as a beacon of communal harmony. He emphasized, “Ajmer Dargah has been a symbol of unity and brotherhood for centuries, attracting people from all communities. Dragging such sacred sites into political or communal controversies is detrimental to the nation’s interests.” "Is the Goal to Convert Every Mosque into a Temple?" In a sharp critique of the government’s intentions, Maulana Zaidi questioned, “Is there an agenda to transform every mosque into a temple? India has ample land for new temples, and such provocations against religious sentiments are against humanity. These actions must be stopped immediately.” "Preserve India’s Syncretic Culture" The Shia leader reiterated the need to uphold India’s Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb—a unique blend of Hindu-Muslim cultural traditions—and called for mutual respect among all religions. “Efforts that harm India’s cultural and traditional values must cease. Peace and harmony should be our foremost priorities,” he added. "A Call for Government Action" Maulana Javed Haider Zaidi’s statement has sparked fresh debates over the implications of religious site surveys and their impact on communal tensions in India. The onus now lies on the government to address these concerns and ensure that the country’s secular ethos remains intact. The cleric’s comments reflect growing apprehension over the politicization of religious sites and the potential fallout on India’s societal fabric.
