Apple-Pie Jihad: US Muslims Fight Domestic Extremism

They are named David. They are clean-shaven dental students and attendees of community colleges. They study hard, play sports, and open Facebook accounts. Their friends call them “normal Joes.” And they’re being arrested in ever-growing numbers, would-be terrorists plotting to kill their fellow Americans and conduct “holy war” at home and abroad. Wednesday’s arrest in Pakistan of five Muslim-American men attests to a growing phenomenon: the radicalization of young American Muslims on American soil.

When the New York Police Department first issued a 90-page report in August 2007 asserting that what it called “homegrown radicalization” was destined to become a major terrorist threat, many of the nation’s civil libertarians, self-proclaimed Muslim spokesmen, and even law enforcement officials were outraged. Civil libertarians warned that the NYPD’s conclusions would lead to religious and ethnic profiling in policing. Muslim groups demanded and got meetings with senior NYPD officials. FBI analysts and officials disputed the NYPD’s findings in interviews and congressional testimony.

But the department stood its ground, and police commissioner Raymond W. Kelly backed his troops. The department’s intelligence division continued its research, and the report gradually found supporters in Washington. With the arrest of the five young Americans in Pakistan, and with the charges filed last month against recruiters from al-Shabaab alleged to have enlisted Somali teens in Minnesota to fight in the Somali civil war, the report’s once-controversial conclusions appear to be all too true.

Islam and the West
Warriors and war-makers: US Marine Corps veteran reflects on Memorial Day 2009

For our warriors in uniform today, I have only praise. I do not support our current wars, and I understand that now as always there are rogues in uniform. But the great majority of our uniformed military personnel are exceptionally well-educated, exceptionally physically fit, and exceptionally committed to their service, whatever their branch, rank, race or gender. Indeed, having served in Vietnam in the Marines, I envy them. Justification for our current wars aside, they enjoy a measure of open, enthusiastic support from the American citizenry that I and my generation never had in our war. And their deaths are mourned openly in a way that never happened during the Vietnam War. I do not begrudge the current generation of service personnel that support. But in my heart of hearts, I would have given anything to have had even a small measure of it in my war, in my day.

The continuing tragedy, however, is that the appointed civilian leadership in the Defense department is even worse now than it was then, combining ignorance and incompetence with a predisposition to take America to war for the interests of a foreign country: Israel. The ignorance and incompetence are crucial, and it is by no means something new. For some odd reason, our political system increasingly has seen fit to put people in important positions, such as Secretary of Defense and the service secretaries and their subordinates, with little or no military experience themselves, and usually no expertise in military affairs. If Americans want to see the result of their handiwork, they need only note that Arlington National Cemetery and our other National Military Cemeteries are choked with the bodies of Americans in uniform who died needlessly because of the ignorance, amateurishness or outright incompetence of their elected and appointed civilian leaders. And if anyone doubts this, the next time someone you love requires emergency surgery, demand that the procedure be performed by the hospital's administrators, accountants and attorneys -- you'll doubtless be as pleased with the outcome as Americans in uniform have been with what has passed for their civilian leadership.

Digesting the Marriott blast

Digesting the Marriott blast

This “it-is-not-our-war” group is clueless about what the Americans and their European allies — and others stretching as far eastward as Japan — can and may do after they no longer have to regard us as an ally but face as an ally of their enemies. Why doesn’t this group make any reference to the alternative strategy — “eat grass honourably?” — in the presumed post-pullout phase? Who will face up to the trespasses made by the NATO-ISAF forces into Pakistan? How will trespasses by Al Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban in safe havens in FATA violate our sovereignty any less? Are we ready to trust the security of the state to Al Qaeda who will, if all goes according to its plan, of course be in charge of the armed forces and will control our nuclear capability? In fact it is this thought about nuclear weapons that inclines the “it-is-not-our-war” club to pre-emptively allege that the Americans are in Afghanistan to “grab our nuclear weapons”. But surely the global consensus on taking out the nuclear weapons acquired by Al Qaeda will develop much more dangerously than it is developing now.

US gloves are off against Pakistan: Crunch Time

US gloves are off against Pakistan: Crunch Time
By M Rama Rao

Whatever be the 'truth' on which the Americans are always economical, the US President's hands were forced by his military commanders who for long were talking about the Pakistan's double-crossing in the fight against terrorists. There was a clear sign of desperation when the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, told the House Armed Services Committee: 'Frankly, we are running out of time…..I am not convinced we are winning in Afghanistan….(but) I am convinced we can.' Both Admiral Mullen and Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Congress this week that for victory in Afghanistan the US needed to take the fight to the enemy inside Pakistan. And on September 9, in a speech at the National Defense University, President Bush all but called Pakistan a terrorist state, saying that terrorists were 'increasingly using Pakistan as a base from which to destabilize Afghanistan's young democracy'.

Tariq Ali: Has the U.S. Invasion of Pakistan Begun?

Tariq Ali: Has the U.S. Invasion of Pakistan Begun?
Tomgram: Posted September 16, 2008
As we head into our "next war," most Americans know almost nothing about Pakistan, the sixth most populous country on the planet with 200 million people, and the only Islamic state with nuclear weapons. As the Bush administration commits to playing with fire in that desperately poor land, it's time to learn. Ali, who posts below on the next U.S. war, has just written a new book, The Duel: Pakistan on the Flight Path of American Power -- published today -- that traces the U.S.-Pakistani relationship from the 1950s to late last night.

Reality check: The American-Pakistani disconnect

Reality check: The American-Pakistani disconnect

By Shafqat Mahmood

Pakistan's complaints do not end here. It accuses the Americans, who are the power behind the puppet Afghan government, of allowing anti-Pakistan activities to take place on Afghan soil. They have allowed the Indian government to establish consulates in various places near the Pakistani border that have only one purpose; to create trouble in Baluchistan and engage in sabotage and terrorism in other parts of the country. They have also through the puppet Afghan government provided sanctuary to anti Pakistan elements such as Brahamdagh Bugti and others.

Terror won’t stop till we fight it like a war

Terror won’t stop till we fight it like a war

By Vikram Sood

Bin Laden has often cited Nagasaki and Hiroshima in his speeches and said that possession of weapons of mass destruction to counter those of the "infidels" is a religious duty. And to carry on with the jihad, it is best to recruit the young and the unattached in the age group of 15 to 25. In February 1998, Osama exhorted Muslims "to kill all Americans and their allies, civilians and military… it is the individual duty of every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible..."

Return of the Taliban: What lies ahead?

Return of the Taliban: What lies ahead?

Nightmare revisited

A few days ago, a motorbike bomber blew himself up on a busy street in Oruzgan, taking down the local police chief, his four assistants and 20 civilians. One day before that, a bunch of heavily-armed Talibs launched a massive assault on a military post near the Pakistan border, leaving nine US soldiers dead. A week earlier, a suicide bomber rammed a car into the Indian embassy in the heart of Kabul, killing 58, including two high officials. So rattled were the Americans by the latest attack on their post that Gen David McKiernan, chief of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, revealed for the first time that the militants were crossing the border to attack his forces as well as firing at them from positions inside Pakistan, indicating that Afghanistan has replaced Iraq as the deadliest war zone for the US and its allies.
