Over 2m Perform Haj: Muslims Urged To Shun Terrorism

JEDDAH, Nov 26: Saudi Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah Al Sheikh asked the Ummah on Thursday not to compromise on the issue of terrorism and urged Muslims to unite against suicide attacks.

“There is no place for terrorism in Islam…Muslim intellectuals should address this menace and should take measures to root out this menace, eradicate misunderstandings about Islam and its teachings,” the grand mufti declared in his Haj sermon at Masjid-i-Nimra in Arafat where over two million Muslims from across the world had gathered for waqoof, the main pillar of Haj. He said that hostile forces were hatching conspiracies against Islam and Muslims across the world, and doubts were being created in the minds of Muslim youths through modern communication tools.

He urged the Ummah to unite to face the challenges of the contemporary world.

He said it was because of the non-Islamic economic principles that world’s largest companies were going bankrupt and the world was looking for refuge. The only refuge, he said, was Islam.

He urged the media not to broadcast programmes that were against moral principles.

The sermon also called upon Muslims to focus on education and learning.

According to some reports, a large contingent among the Iranian pilgrims held a peaceful protest in their camp at Arafat, ignoring Saudi government’s warnings against political activities.

They chanted slogans for Muslim unity and against the enemies of the faith.

“Death to America, death to Israel,” they chanted inside a huge tent.

The Saudi security forces did not intervene.

Islam and Pluralism
Towards Muslim-Christian understanding

Pope Benedict's visit to the Middle East last week has accentuated the need to improve relations between Muslims and Christians at multiple levels. Despite sharing a common Abrahamic lineage, both faith communities have a chequered history of relations going back to the Crusades. While the Koran recognizes Christians and Jews as "people of the book," some verses of the book are often taken out of context as well by some Muslims to advocate an exclusionary theology that marginalizes other faiths.

The pope visited the Holy Land at a time when there is a major migration of minority Christian communities from the Muslim-majority region to other parts of the world. In his recent book about the "Middle East's vanishing Christians," Charles Sennott raises the significant question of why this is occurring. In areas such as Palestine, the population of Christians has declined from 7 percent in 1948 to around 2 percent in 2009.

What are the factors for such a decline? Some may argue that Christian communities have historically had higher education levels allowing them to migrate more easily during times of economic stress or political instability. However, there is perhaps also an issue of feeling marginalized in Muslim dominant countries that may need to be addressed. For example, in addition to the Christian exodus from Palestine, there is the problem of mass migration from Iraq, where the United States-led invasion has left long-standing Christian minorities prone to the threats of extremist groups.

US gloves are off against Pakistan: Crunch Time

US gloves are off against Pakistan: Crunch Time
By M Rama Rao

21 September 2008

Whatever be the 'truth' on which the Americans are always economical, the US President's hands were forced by his military commanders who for long were talking about the Pakistan's double-crossing in the fight against terrorists. There was a clear sign of desperation when the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, told the House Armed Services Committee: 'Frankly, we are running out of time…..I am not convinced we are winning in Afghanistan….(but) I am convinced we can.' Both Admiral Mullen and Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Congress this week that for victory in Afghanistan the US needed to take the fight to the enemy inside Pakistan. And on September 9, in a speech at the National Defense University, President Bush all but called Pakistan a terrorist state, saying that terrorists were 'increasingly using Pakistan as a base from which to destabilize Afghanistan's young democracy'.
