As for someone who issues a religious verdict that this (what the terrorists do) is Jihad – who says this is Jihad? Are the people who issue such rulings dependable, respectable or are they simply supporters and defenders – ignorant people? They are definitely not scholars. Has a single, dependable and respectable scholar ever said that this is Jihad? Never. It is a lie. This (the actions of the terrorists) is not Jihad. Rather, it is sinning against Allah and His Messenger, a violation and transgression against what Muslims hold sacred, and opposition and rebellion against the obedience to the leader of the Muslims.

On this chilly evening he had on a woolly, brocade-trimmed bisht, the cloak that Saudi men wear on formal occasions or in cool weather, which gave him a slightly imposing air. But behind his thick glasses, his eyes shone warmly as he surveyed the classroom.

Finally, someone answered: “We do jihad to fight our enemies.”

“To defeat God’s enemies?” another suggested.

“To help weak Muslims,” a third offered.

The Pakistan army today, according to all informed sources available to me, has a majority of captains and colonels who owe allegiance to the Taliban and Islamist fundamentalism. In another five years, these middle ranks will reach, through normal promotions, the corps commander level. We know that the government in Pakistan has always been controlled by the seven corps commanders of the army. Therefore a Taliban government in Pakistan five years hence seems a highly probable outcome. Jihad, that is, war against India will be the logical consequence of that outcome.

Police sources said militants visited mosques during prayer times and asked people to listen to them for a few minutes like that of a Tablighi group.

“They have adopted the same method like Tablighis, but the only difference is that they focus on importance of ‘jihad’ and ask people to register their names for the purpose if needed,” a source said.

The concept of jihad has shifted to refer to infidel encroachment rather than an ethical struggle to be more human. The word has had a topsy- turvy journey. Its beginnings were in imaan ( faith), but over the centuries, jihad has come to be associated with external sacrifice rather than an inner struggle to understand Islam.”

The spokesman said the TTP came into existence in the name of jihad and its aim was to fight a holy war against India and the United States forces in Afghanistan. Maulvi Umer said the TTP had damaged India’s interests in Afghanistan in many actions. He said the TTP could not even think of taking financial assistance from India, an enemy, to create chaos and law and order problems in Pakistan. The spokesman said India was the worst enemy of Pakistan. He said a responsible person like Rehman Malik should avoid issuing statements that were not based on facts as such statements were not in the interests of Pakistan.
