During the ongoing insurgency in Balochistan in Pakistan, at least four children were killed in a suicide blast in an army school bus in Khuzdar in Balochistan early in the morning today, 22 May 2025. The bus was reportedly carrying children and adults. After the early investigations, the police claimed that it was a suicide blast. Though no militant group has claimed responsibility for the ghastly attack targeting children, the attack bears the mark of the TTP. The BLA or any other Baloch insurgent group may also be involved in the attack but no Baloch group has yet owned the attack.
Pakistan's government was quick to blame India as it has been doing but India's foreign ministry rejected Pakistan's claim and said Pakistan was trying to hoodwink the world to hide its own failures. Pakistan has been saying that the insurgency was being funded and fuelled by India though the Baloch people have been fighting Pakistan since 1948 against what they call Pakistan's illegal occupation of Balochistan. Pakistan has suppressed a number of armed uprisings by Baloch nationalists and their fight has only intensified in the last two years due to Pakistan army's atrocities and unlawful activities in Balochistan.
The attack in Khuzdar has raised many questions and some political.analysts and retired army personnel are of the opinion that it might be a false flag operation of the Pakistan army itself. Major (retd.) Adeel Raja of Pakistan has said that the suicide bombing on the bus of Army Public School was a false flag operation. Another political analyst of Pakistan, andva MQM leader, based in London, Arif Ajakia also is of the view that the attack was staged by the Pakistan army itself to divert the attention of the global community from its atrocities on Baloch people and gain the sympathy of the world. The reason for his conclusion Mr Ajakia gives is that the army schools have closed on 17 May till 31st July on account of summer vacation. The children travelling in the Army Public School Bus were reportedly in school uniform with school bags. He raises the question as to why the children were in the bus with their school bags in their school uniform. The army has not yet presented any explanation for this.
The second question that Mr Ajakia raises is: why was the bus without any security vehicle when the entire area is under the control of the insurgents. The Baloch leaders Mir Yar Baloch and Razaq Baloch have claimed that 80 per cent of Balochistan is under their control and that the army does not come out of their cantonments during the night. The army has been pushed to cantonments in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan. Therefore, allowing a school bus of the army to run with students without security puts the role and intentions of the army in question.
The TTP has not claimed responsibility for the attack but they are known for attacks on school vans of Shia school children in Pakistan. They also attacked the army public school in Peshawar on 16 December, 2014 and killed 150 people of which 135 were children. The attacks were a response to the army's operation Zarb-e-Azab against the TTP and other militant groups up in arms against the army and the 'secular' government of Pakistan.
There have been clashes between the Pak army and the TTP in the tribal province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and they fight each other almost daily, inflicting casualties on each other. They have upped the ante against the Pak army since the ascent of Taliban in Afganistan in 2021. In 2024 alone, 702 clashes between the army and the TTP have taken place in which 1,363 terrorists and security personnel have died. In the first four months of 2025, about 300 attacks by militants have already been carried out against the security forces and 275 casualties from both sides have been reported. The TTP also attacks the Pak army in Balochistan where it has considerable presence.
Another important revelation made by Mr Arif Ajakia about the army's role in false flag operations is that the spokesperson of the TTP Ehsanullah Ehsan had told the media in Turkey that the Pak army itself used to provide them the list of targets and they had attacked the army school in Peshawar at their behest. If that is true then the role of the army and the TTP cannot be ruled out in Khuzdar attack with the objective of building a case against the Baloch rebels though the Pak army also killed children and women in drone attacks in Balochistan in March 2025.
It should be recalled that the army had lost 800 soldiers and officers during the Operation Zarb-e-Aab in 2014-15 and had virtually conceded defeat at the hands of the TTP and the operation had come to an abrupt end. The army has not been able to crush the TTP because a section of the Pak army is hand in gloves with terrorist and militant orgnisations.
Currently, Pakistan is going through a civil war as most of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are under the control of the separatists or insurgents. Out of 38 districts of KP, 28 districts are affected by insurgency. Now Sindh has also become restless. Yesterday, the house of the home minister of Sindh was attacked and set on fire by angry demonstrators. They were protesting a canal project and a corporate farming project undertaken by the Pak army. The Pak army occupies land in the name of projects and businesses. This has fuelled revolt against the army in Sindh.
Despite all this, the army generals and mullahs of Pakistan do not hesitate to claim that Pakistan is a gift of God especially carved out for them. Just two weeks before the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Gen. Asim Munir had boasted that God had created Pakistan for the Muslims and that the Muslims of Pakistan were different from Hindus (of India) in every possible aspect of life. His statement had drawn applause from the non-resident Pakistanis who have long abandoned their country because of the poverty, atrocities of the army, religious fanaticism which targets women for wearing clothes with 'Halwa' printed on it, sectarian violence and target killings that are a part of the daily life of the Pakistanis.
