I am particularly more distressed with their brazen violation and distortion of the true Islamic behaviour with Christians as epitomised by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). I wonder what category of hell the Prophet pbuh would have suggested for the Al-Shabab killers of Christians, had he been a witness to their atrocities today. Obviously, the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) who is reported to have said that "anyone who kills a non-Muslim citizen will not smell the fragrance of paradise" (Nasai) must have taken an uncompromising stand against today’s self-styled Jihadists, warning them with devastating punishment in hell.  Speaking generally about all non-Muslims living in an Islamic country, the Prophet said: "He who hurts a dhimmi (non-Muslim citizen of Muslim state) hurts me and he who hurts me annoys Allah." (Reported by Imam Tabrani) The Prophet also declared: "Whoever hurts a non-Muslim, I am his adversary, and I shall be an adversary to him on the Day of Rising." (Reported by Al Khateeb). Another Hadith report quotes him as having said, "On the Day of Resurrection I shall dispute with anyone who oppresses a person from among the non-Muslims, or infringes on his right, or puts a responsibility on him which is beyond his capacity or takes something from him against his will." نرگسیت میں مریض کسی اصول کا پابند نہیں ہوتا۔ اسے اپنی خواہشات اور پیش قدمی کے لئے جو بھی موزوں لگے، کر گزرتا ہے۔ مثلاً اگر اسے اپنی طاقت پر اعتماد ہے تو وہ طاقت کو میرٹ قرار دے گا۔ لیکن دوسرے ہی لمحے اگر اس کا حریف طاقتور ہوتا نظر آئے تو وہ طاقت کے استعمال کو ظلم اور بربریت قرار دے کر اپنی کمزوری کو میرٹ قرار دے گا۔ یا اگر اس کا حریف وطن اور قوم کے تصورات کا پرچار کر رہا ہے تو وہ قومی وطنیت کو بدترین گناہ اور ابلیسی فلسفہ کہے گا۔ لیکن دوسرے ہی لمحے اگر اسے کسی علاقہ پر حکومت حاصل ہونے کی امید دکھائی دے تو وہ قومی وطنیت کے اصول کو حکمِ خدا وندی قرار دے گا۔ مندرجہ ذیل اسی فنکارانہ متلون مزاجی کی مثالیں ہیں:

Pakistani Media and the ISI: A Demon Devouring Freedom of Expression

The recent ban on the Jung group of publications’ TV channel Geo has brought to fore the power and influence Pakistan’s ISI has over the media. In April this year, the senior journalist of Geo Hamid Mir was shot by some unidentified assailants. Hamid Mir had suggested the hands of ISI in the attack as he has been very critical of the role of ISI in the country. Last month, his brother had said on the channel that ISI chief had ordered the attack on his brother. This invited the wrath of the ISI which is the intelligence wing of the Pakistan army.

Under pressure from Pakistan army, Geo TV was banned for 15 days. Just before that, it made another mistake. In one of its morning shows, it played the video footage of the wedding of Veena Malik and Asad Malik with a traditional song that suggested that Veena Malik was like Hadhrat Fatima (R.A) and her husband was like Hadhrat Ali (R.A.) This created a controversy as the PEMRA, the regulatory authority of electronic media got 5000 complaints about the programme. Though the GEO broadcast apology on its channel, people, religious and militant organisations demanded blasphemy case slapped against the channel.

ऐसी खबरें आ रही हैं कि बगदाद और आसपास के क्षेत्रों में शिया और कुर्दों ने आईएसआईएस के अभियान को रोकने के लिए शहादत की क़सम ले ली है और वो पवित्र स्थानों की रक्षा के लिए अपनी जानों पर खेल जाएंगे। ईरान ने भी संकेत दिया है कि अगर इराक़ के पवित्र स्थलों को विद्रोहियों ने नुकसान पहुंचाने की कोशिश की तो वो चुप नहीं बैठेगा। इन परिस्थितियों में इराक़ एक खतरनाक गृहयुद्ध के कगार पर खड़ा दिखाई देता है। लेकिन ये सवाल भी उठता है कि जिन क्षेत्रों में लड़ाकों ने क़ब्ज़ा किया है वहाँ शिया लोगों ने कोई प्रतिरोध क्यों नहीं किया।

چت بھی میرا پٹ بھی میرا

مریضانہ نرگسیت کی ایک اور علامت یہ ہے کہ مریض چت بھی میرا پٹ بھی میرا کے اصول پر عمل کرتا ہے۔ اپنے ارد گرد باصلاحیت شخص سے خطرہ محسوس کرتے ہوئے اس کے خلاف کردار کشی یا تذلیل و تحقیر کی مہم چلاتا ہے۔ اس عمل میں وہ عام اخلاقیات کے برعکس اپنی فضیلت اور صلاحیت کا طرح طرح سے بیان کرتا ہے۔ اس بیان کی نفاست یا کثافت کا انحصار فرد کی تہذیبی اور فکری سطح پر ہے۔ تاہم یہ واضح ہے کہ فضیلت کا یہ اظہار صاف دکھائی دیتا ہے۔ وہ کبھی اپنی کوتاہی ، کمزوری کا اعتراف یا اپنے کسی جرم کا اقبال نہیں کرتا۔ لیکن اگر اس کا حریف اپنی کوتاہی کا اعتراف یا جرم کا اقبال کرے تو یہ اس بات کو اخلاقی جرأت کے طور پر لائقِ تحسین ہرگز قرار نہیں دیتا بلکہ لپک کر اس اقرارکو اپنی پاکبازی اور مزید فضیلت کا ثبوت بنا لیتا ہے۔

تہذیبی نرگسیت میں اس کی صورت اس طرح سے ہے کہ ہم اپنی ثقافت، اپنے مذہب، اپنے آباؤ اجداد غرضیکہ جس کا بھی تذکرہ چل پڑے، ہر ایک کی فضیلت بیان کرنے میں کسی احتیاط یا انحصار کو ضروری نہیں سمجھتے۔ آئے دن نئے نئے حضرت اور مولانا اور پیر اور مرشد پیدا ہوتے رہتے ہیں۔ اپنی تعریف میں ہمیں کوئی دوڑ کوئی واقعہ افسوسناک نظر نہیں آتا۔ اگر ہم نے دنیا فتح کی ، قوموں کوذمّی بنایا، غلام رکھے، لونڈیاں رکھیں، اگر ہمارے محترم عرب رہنما آج بھی دنیا بھر سے غلام اور لونڈیاں خریدتے اور حرم بھرتے ہیں تو ہمیں کسی خفت کا سامنا نہیں۔ مگر ہم امریکہ، یورپ ، بھارت اور اسرائیل کی عریانی ، بے حیائی، بدکاری، ظلم، وحشت و بربریت کی مثالیں گنواتے بس نہیں کرتے۔ اگر امریکی ڈرون طیاروں کے حملوں میں چند معصوم قبائلی مارے جائیں تو اس کے انتقام کے طور پر سینکڑوں بے قصور پاکستانیوں کا قتل اس لئے جائز قرار دے دیا جاتا ہے کہ یہ ہماری تہذیبی مظلومیت کا انتقام ہے۔ اس میں پاکستان کے مظلوم کم مظلوم ہو جاتے ہیں کیونکہ ان کے مقابلے میں مجاہد قبائلیوں کا مقام بالاتر ہے۔ تقدس اور مظلومیت کی طویل داستان گوئی کا اندازہ لگانے کے لئے صرف چند اقتباسات یعنی دیگ میں سے چند چاول ملاحظہ ہوں (یہ اقتباسات ڈاکٹر اسرار احمد کے مضمون ’’علامہ اقبال، قائد اعظم اور نظریہ پاکستان‘‘ سے لیے گئے ہیں جو نوائے وقت 23 اکتوبر 2008ء میں شائع ہوا)

The Medieval Era Rooted Qur’an Conflicting Muslim Personal Law (Sharia Law) Must Be Reformed To Avoid Injustices to Muslim Women – An SOS to the Indian Ulema Fraternity

Having intensively researched into the Qur’an and secondary sources of Islam spanning over a decade, and co-authoring a focused Tafsir work (Essential Message of Islam), the author has absolutely no doubt in his mind that the traditional interpretation of many gender related Qur’anic verses are not consistent with the holistic message of the Qur’an. His joint research work has also established that the traditional translations / Tafsir are rooted in the Tafsir works of early centuries of Islam and are accordingly informed by the civilisational paradigms and gender dynamics of the era. Since the civilisational paradigms and gender dynamics of human society have seen a sea change over the last century, the traditional interpretation of many gender related Qur’anic verses stand unjust and oppressive to the Muslim women today in civilisational relativism.

Unless these verses are reinterpreted in line with the Qur’anic holistic message that espouses gender equitability, and mercy and compassion in man-woman relationship, the Indian Ulema collectively may stand as criminals in divine court for doing injustice to their own women – a matter that is drawing the concern of their Hindu brethren who have already reformed their own laws and thus mitigated the injustices to which their women were historically subjected. The author therefore lists the links to a set of his articles with concluding remarks drawn on his joint research work (ref. above) that was published by a leading American Islamic publication house, Amana Publications (2009),following approval of its manuscript by al-Azhar al-Sharif, scrutiny and restructuring by a Syrian origin Canadian scholar, Afra Jalabiand endorsement and authentication by Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, the Alfi Distinguished Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law, who is, among other things, an internationally recognized authority on Qur’anic exegesis, Islam’s secondary sources and Sharia Law. The work focuses on clear commandments of the Qur’an and is based primarily on the Qur’an’s internal vocabulary and illustrations and attempts to expound its universal message including the detail of its personal laws. It is designed to be a focused Tafsir e Qur’an by the Qur’an which is regarded as the highest form of Tafsir. Therefore, its insights and interpretations as tabled selectively in the articles indicated below are worthy of serious consideration.
