Satyrs And Erotomaniacs Are On The Prowl In All Nooks And Crannies. ---- 'Urban' India seems to be on a rape spree. Though my statement may sound a trifle frivolous, it's the reality at the moment. A young trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in the ' City of Joy ' that boasts of Bhadralok (urbane) culture. A medico, with the help of two assistants, raped a 20-yr-old 'Dalit' nurse in Moradabad, UP. A few dailies have reported that the doctor, who raped the nurse in Moradabad, is a Muslim (Dr Shahnawaz) and his both the assistants are also Muslims. The caste (Brahmin) of the young ill-fated doctor in Calcutta is being bandied about on social media and platforms. What do religion and caste have to do with a heinous and horrendous crime like rape? The perpetrators and victims could be from any caste and creed. We're missing the forest for the trees. Instead of condemning rampant rapes across the country, we're dwelling upon the caste and religion! Rape is no less than a felony. It defiles not just the victim but desecrates all women. Much more than a reprehensible act of individual subjugation, it's the collective humiliation and desecration of women of all hues and shades. Why's a woman so unsafe and vulnerable in India? What makes our men so disgustingly lustful and priapic? This 'culture' of rape, molestation and casting couch has seeped into all walks of life. Readers might be aware of the sex racket at Mollywood, Kerala film industry and how actresses are (s)exploited by the directors and producers. Women are still commodities for men. That she can be on an even keel with a man is not yet acceptable, nay digestible, to our disconcertingly patriarchal society. Unless we collectively change this pathological attitude towards them (women) and create a safe workplace for every woman irrespective of her social standing, rapes will continue to take place. All men must change their hinterland and backwaters perceptions about women. We need to educate our oversexed men to control their carnal desires that keep swirling in their sick minds all the time. Satyrs and erotomaniacs are on the prowl in all nooks and crannies. Of late, men seem to have become too lewd and libidinous! Or, have they been like that right from the beginning? I wonder.
