The Jamiat-ul-Ulema's regressive agenda has shocked the nation. Of late the Jamiat had acquired a rather positive image owing to its sustained anti-terrorism campaign, even though it did not go far enough and hence was not very effective.

But in its recent Deoband convention organised by the Maulana Mahmood Madani faction, it has practically served notice on Muslims, particularly women, to stay within the boundaries set by 8th century ulema who had endorsed the so-called ahadees (sayings of Prophet Mohammad) concocted two to three centuries after the demise of the prophet.

These ahadees contravene the progressive, even feminist teachings of the Koran specifically to degrade and humiliate women and uphold the pre-Islamic practices.

The Jamiat has asked Muslim men to ensure "sisters, wives and mothers wear burqa", and do not bring "disrepute to the community". Endorsing Jamiat's archaic thinking, a number of ulema told the large Muslim gathering that a woman's status in society should be "secondary and subdued". They should abstain from watching cinema or television or going to co-ed schools; restrictive Sharia practices would apply to them after the age of 10.

It may take weeks or months or even years, but one thing is certain: the unravelling of Iran's Islamic revolution has begun: there will be no return to the status quo. Both the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stand diminished and their capacity to deal with the world as much as with their own people inexorably weakened. What began as a protest over suspected rigging of the elections that are supposed to have re-elected Ahmadinejad as president for another term has now metastasized into a challenge to the very system of an unelected Vilayet-i-Faqih (supreme jurist or leader) ruling the country with the help of a president elected by people from among the choices approved by the Supreme Leader himself.

The United States intervened to free Afghanistan from the Taliban. It may end up handing Taliban a nuclear-armed Pakistan. In the battle for Pakistan, though the Pakistan Army seems to have joined the battle now, the Taliban have reached 60 kilometres from the capital, Islamabad. Yet until just a few days ago the impression was that Pakistan's newly-elected democratic government has been constantly ceding ground. First FATA, then Swat, now the nearby towns and the adjoining Buner district. Even now many objective observers both within Pakistan and outside have very serious doubts if the Army has really killed the 700-odd Taliban it claims to have. Journalists in press conferences in Islamabad have asked to be shown the bodies. They have been promised photos. Yet, the question persists: Will the march of Taliban stop there? By no means, it would appear. With great candour, born of their tremendous self-confidence, the Taliban have already announced their real intentions. They want to rule Pakistan and establish their so-called Sharia in the entire country.

They know that a compromised Pakistan Army, with nearly 40 per cent of its cadre Talibanised, and not prepared to listen to the democratic government's dictates, does not have the wherewithal to stop their march. Taliban's retreat from Buner under intense U.S. pressure on Islamabad is only a tactical ploy to be undone at a more convenient time. It is clear that if at all the Pakistan Army is fighting, it is doing so under US pressure so as not to jeopardise the massive injunction of American funds into the Pakistan economy and its own coffers.

Why Muslims returned to Congress?

The most heartening news is the decimation of all exclusivist trends among Muslims. Muslims have sealed the fate of almost dozen-odd Muslim outfits in this election. Not one of them has been able to even make a mark. Muslims have given thumbs down to the politics of exclusion, negativism and denial of our own shortcomings. Many of them were created just before the elections and tried to incite Muslim sentiments over what they claimed was "targeted harassment of the minority in the name of terrorism", thus seeking to deny the fact that some of our youth are indeed turning to terrorism under the influence of so-called Islamist terrorist outfits and their ideology of radical Jihadism in the name of Islam. The growing influence of Wahhabis in the community is helping the process. But instead of addressing these issues and making amends, some Muslims, notably some so-called ulema, sought to simply blame the government and try their hand at exclusivist politics. It is gratifying that the community has not heeded them and has instead returned to inclusive politics and has largely voted along with other communities for the greater good of the country, keeping the nation’s best interest in mind.

Mr. Mohammad Wajihuddin of Times News Network quotes Sultan Shahin, the Editor of liberal Islamic website New Age Islam as saying that he is battling Petrodollar Islam.
