Rational Muslims should speak against the obscurantist, medieval and irrational ideas of Zakir Naik, Letter to the Editor, NewAgeIslam.com

Letter to the Editor
Rational Muslims should speak against the obscurantist, medieval and irrational ideas of Zakir Naik

It is surprising that the process of development of rational thinking among Muslims is very slow. Most middle class Muslims also treat this issue as that of identity. This is high time that educated, rational and secular Muslims should come out and speak against the obscurantist, medieval and irrational ideas being propounded by the likes of Mr. Zakir Naik. Otherwise, the hands of those anti - Islamic forces will be strengthened who treat Islam as an intolerant, dangerous and barbaric ideology out to capture and enslave the world! It is specially important as more people are turning atheist or, non-religious and an impression has been created that people not believing in God will be killed/exterminated in Islamic societies.

This kind of Fascist and inhuman/barbaric interpretation is un-Islamic and incompatible with modern civilisation. Why should people be forced to believe in something which they do not want or, require? After all, people who do not believe in God also live happily and can be good citizens. Why should anybody force them to change their thinking and lifestyle if they are not harming others? Why should human robots be created in the name of religion who are not permitted to think or, analyse? Who gives these fanatics such authority? It is the silence of majority Muslims who do not want to confront them. Even if some fanatic interpretation provides them with such self-proclaimed authority, it has to be condemned and opposed by all rational Muslims.

Olympics is degrading to women: Zakir Naik

Mumbai: "Women's rights are protected in Islam. Our Prophet has talked about women being major beneficiaries for social, political, spiritual and legal rights," said Zakir Naik, president, Islamic Research Foundation (IRF).He was speaking at the Somaiya grounds in Sion (E) on Saturday, dispelling myths about the rights of Muslim women in Islam. Naik blamed the media for painting a distorted picture of the Islamic laws for women.

"A hijab doesn't subjugate a woman. The first Corithians Book of the Bible, in chapter 11, verse 7-8, states that if a woman doesn't cover her head, it should be shaved. There is a mention of covering heads in the Vedas too. In Rajasthan, women do not get out of their homes without a veil. So why make a big deal about Islam?"

When asked about women being stopped from entering mosques, Naik said, "Women are not prevented from entering mosques. Unfortunately, unlike the Gulf, in India, there's no separate prayer place for women. The problem is with Indian culture, not Islam. We segregate them because we stand shoulder-to-shoulder. Otherwise, how will one be able to concentrate on God."

Stressing on women's rights in Islam, Naik said, "A woman can own or disown a property without taking permission. Islam gave the right to do that 1,400 years before the Western world did. Islam also permits women to inherit. In Islam, men give dowry to women, called meher. Muslim men are influenced by the Indian culture to accept dowries. It is the culture to be blamed."

World's Greatest Showman: Zakir Naik

Ali Sina on Zakir Naik: A review of

The Qur'an and the Bible in the Light of Science

In 2000, a televised debate between Dr. William Campbell representing Christian view point and Dr. Zakir Naik representing Islamic view point took place.

Pakistan Daily Times wrote:

On December 7, 2005, a TV channel (QTV or Al-Noor) showed a debate between William Campbell and Zakir Naik, which showed the other side of the polemic. In the past it was Zakir Naik trying to prove other religions wrong; this time it was William Campbell rebutting his arguments.

This was fair enough. If you don't want your religion criticized don't do it to other religions. When Dr. Campbell criticized Muslims for claiming scientific discovery in the Quran one had to listen.

The TV channel took a fair decision, but when Dr. Campbell began cutting close to where it hurt, the program was suddenly taken off in favor of na'at. If this was done out of fear it was not a good decision and showed Dr Naik in a bad light. (Later news is that Dr Naik won the debate.)

Muslims are convinced that Dr. Naik won that debate. In fact once you watch the video, unless you know the Quran and Islam fairly well, this is the impression that you get. Dr. Naik was so confident and so boisterous throughout the debate that anyone watching would think the same.

Or did he? I went through this debate and have analyzed the talk of Dr. Naik paragraph by paragraph. In this paper I have shown that Dr. Naik misrepresented every statement he made on the Quran. There is not a single claim that Dr. Naik has made about the Quran being miraculous or scientifically accurate that is true.

I have entitled this paper, World's Greatest Showman, because after watching his performance, in my opinion, it describes him best. Dr. Naik is a magician. Magicians make you believe they cut people in two, make objects disappear and reappear and make rabbits come out of an empty hat.

Jihad is the most misunderstood word in Islam: DR. ZAKIR NAIK tells NDTV

Jihad is the most misunderstood word in Islam: DR. ZAKIR NAIK tells NDTV
A.M. Jamsheed Basha
On the question of his interpretation of Quran based on Hadith, Dr. Zakir Naik said that he goes to the original sources before commenting on anything. He cited a verse from Quran to justify that Allah has directed Muslims to first verify before you comment on anybody or anything concerning human life. While clarifying his stand on Osama bin Laden, he said that he did not know him but learnt about him only through newspapers and television channels. He said he could not say whether he was a saint or a terrorist, as he had no source to verify the facts. On the 9/11 attack by Al-Qaida, he denounced it as unislamic as Allah never approved of killing of innocent people whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims.
