Islam and the West
‘Europe must learn from the Swiss ban on minarets as quickly as possible‘

Will Europe put its foot down?

By Hege Storhaug

The Swiss vote against the construction of any more Islamic minarets has forced Europe, increasingly awash with Muslim immigrants, to ask itself some difficult questions: How many minarets can Europe tolerate before its strong sense of communal connection is dissolved? What will happen, then, to democracy’s liberal values?

Either Islam will be Europeanised, or Europe will be Islamised.” In recent years this prediction has been made by many major experts, among them the American Bernard Lewis, the Syrian-born German Bassam Tibi, and the French Gilles Kepel. This is, without question, an uncomfortable and sensitive topic, but it’s one that is very pertinent now that the Swiss have put their foot down and said that they will not accept another minaret within their borders.

In recent decades, Islam has exploded in Europe. You can see the changes with your own eyes from year to year —whether it’s the increasing presence of hijabs on the street in a city like Oslo, or the bearded men with ankle-high baggy pants, or the new and resplendent mosques that are under construction. For my part, I’ve noticed an increasing insecurity and unease among ‘ordinary’ people who feel like aliens in their own country. People ask: What is the purpose of this project? Don’t we, as a nation, have a right to pass our own cultural legacy, our traditions and values, on to our children and grandchildren? Should we, in the name of tolerance, give in to the demands made by ‘others’ whose influence is growing, and whose voices are becoming louder, as their numbers increase? Or as a Norwegian Labour Party politician said to me in a private conversation: “On the day that most of the members of the city council are Muslims, what do you think will happen to the right of Oslo bars to serve alcohol?” Another leading Labourite with over a couple of decades’ experience in politics put it more bluntly when I asked him “What you think about immigration from the Muslim world?” The answer was so crisp, merciless, and genuinely felt that I gasped: “What have they contributed?” Period.

Olympics is degrading to women: Zakir Naik, Islamic World News, NewAgeIslam.com

Olympics is degrading to women: Zakir Naik

Mumbai: "Women's rights are protected in Islam. Our Prophet has talked about women being major beneficiaries for social, political, spiritual and legal rights," said Zakir Naik, president, Islamic Research Foundation (IRF).He was speaking at the Somaiya grounds in Sion (E) on Saturday, dispelling myths about the rights of Muslim women in Islam. Naik blamed the media for painting a distorted picture of the Islamic laws for women.

"A hijab doesn't subjugate a woman. The first Corithians Book of the Bible, in chapter 11, verse 7-8, states that if a woman doesn't cover her head, it should be shaved. There is a mention of covering heads in the Vedas too. In Rajasthan, women do not get out of their homes without a veil. So why make a big deal about Islam?"

When asked about women being stopped from entering mosques, Naik said, "Women are not prevented from entering mosques. Unfortunately, unlike the Gulf, in India, there's no separate prayer place for women. The problem is with Indian culture, not Islam. We segregate them because we stand shoulder-to-shoulder. Otherwise, how will one be able to concentrate on God."

Stressing on women's rights in Islam, Naik said, "A woman can own or disown a property without taking permission. Islam gave the right to do that 1,400 years before the Western world did. Islam also permits women to inherit. In Islam, men give dowry to women, called meher. Muslim men are influenced by the Indian culture to accept dowries. It is the culture to be blamed."

How Britain's mosques foster extremism

How Britain's mosques foster extremism
Most British Muslims are under 25. When, like me, they have questions about identity, belonging, values, and religion, their local mosque leadership is futile. Britain's mosques are run by men who are physically in Britain, but psychologically in Pakistan. They retain their village rituals and sectarianism, and prevent the growth of an indigenous British Islam. And for as long as young Muslims are confused about whether they belong in Britain or elsewhere, we risk handing them over to preying extremists in our midst.
