Sunni Barelvi's Dictate: Sons Nikah Re-performed For Participating In the Funeral of Their Father

By PNN January 19, 2023 Muslims Caste and Religion-Based Attitude of Discrimination Continues ----- The current situation of the country and the nation requires that we put aside caste and religious differences and live with unity and brotherhood, but perhaps Muslims are not ready to come to their senses hence their caste and religion-based attitude of discrimination continues. A recent case of religious prejudice has come to light in a village of District Varanasi where the marriage of three sons was renewed (Nikah performed again) due to their attending the funeral of their father who believed in Wahhabi (Ahl e Hadees) ideology and the sons belonged to the Sunni (Barelvi) school of thought. According to the details, this incident took place in the village Muhammadpur under Jinsa police station located on Bhadohi road, about fifteen kilometres from Banaras city where the Sunni (Barelvi) sect is in majority, and only a few families are associated with the Wahhabi (Ahl e Hadees) sect. The name of the deceased was Muhibullah. A few years ago, something happened to him because of which he was prevented from offering prayers in the Sunni mosque, so he started offering prayers in the Ahl e-Hadees mosque and got famous as a Wahhabi in the village. Other members of his family, including his sons, remained Sunni (Barelvi). Muhibullah passed away recently. The family and other relatives refused to offer his funeral prayers and the Wahhabis of the village were informed to perform his last rites (Namaz e Janaza and Tadfeen). People of the Wahhab (Ahl e Hadees) sect of the village performed the funeral prayers and the burial rituals of the deceased. Other villagers did not join the funeral prayer, but Muhammad Aslam, Sikandar and Jafar, the sons of the deceased Muhibullah, participated in the funeral prayer of their father. When this was reported to the influential Sunnis Hafiz Muhammad Musa Ansari and Maulana Laeeq Ahmad Ansari of the neighbourhood, they suggested his three sons perform their Nikah again. The above incident has become a topic of discussion among the people in other nearby villages. People are deploring this religiously biased attitude. People say that on the one hand, where non-Muslims are making all sorts of incitements against Muslims and Islam and are targeting Islamic rituals, teachers are being sent behind bars for only mentioning the name of Allah in madrasas and schools on the other hand religious biased Muslims are against Muslims themselves. This is a very deplorable situation. This heinous attitude of religious prejudice, which is preventing sons from participating in their father's last rites, does not seem to end soon.
