It
is the crisis of authority in the Muslim world due to which random groups
pining for the return of Muslim glory make bold claims as to what constitutes
Shariah law and give their own misconstrued versions tracing them back to
sacred texts or early Muslim culture. Those who got together to condemn Boko
Haram’s actions as un-Islamic must also with a single voice present a blueprint
of Islamic law that is relevant, practical and applicable today, in tune with
contemporary cultural and socio political context. It is a long haul, but
unless such a juristic magnum opus is initiated, twisted, grotesque and
soulless versions of ‘Shariah’ will keep haunting us like a spectre. Authority
as to who interprets religious law and how has to be won back.

New
dynamic, feminist activist and religiously committed Western women are
reinterpreting old texts, including the Qur’an. They are coming up with
interpretations that radically challenge old, male-centred
interpretations. Many such women, most of whom wear hijab, are very
active today in seeking positions of leadership in Muslim organisations,
including positions of religious leadership. Some too are rereading old
texts on the hijab and, while they remain committed practicing Muslims,
they are concluding that hijab is not after all mandatory. Certainly in
any case it is clear that for those who do wear hijab, the meanings
that hijab has in a Western democratic context where women are free to
dress as they wish, are no longer the patriarchal meanings that this
dress still has in most Muslim majority societies........
This is an instance of how the self-styled Jihadist scholars and radical
zealots are beginning to deny the established Islamic doctrine of
greater Jihad blaming the Sufis for preaching it as a campaign against
the rampant murderous Jihadism. They have now started to totally deny it
to the extent of declaring all the Prophetic traditions (Hadees) in its
favour as Maudu (fabricated) or Daeef (technically weak). Not only
this, they are also rejecting or misinterpreting the Qur’anic texts
establishing the beautiful concept of jihad al-nafs, while the holy
Qur’an has exhorted this spiritual Islamic Jihad against one's negative
ego in various places. Some of them are as the following
