Deoband's battle for survival and relevance
Text and Photo by Luv Puri
December 2009

Given new security restrictions and internal obduracy, one of the region’s most important schools of Islam stands at a crossroads.

On a hot, humid July afternoon, 22-year-old Shah Alam is among the thousand-odd Muslim students squatting to work on their final exams in a madrasa in Deoband, in the northern tip of Uttar Pradesh. When he was 14, Alam (see pic) lost both of his arms in an accident; but he has since learned how to write with his elbows, and has enrolled in an eight-year course to become an alim, a religious scholar. He is among thousands of young Muslim men, from diverse ethnic, geographic and linguistic backgrounds, who have come to school in the small town of Deoband, to study various aspects of Sunni Islam, including logic, Islamic jurisprudence, Quranic studies, the history of literature and the hadiths. Yet despite a century and a half of crucial education work, today Deobandi seminaries find themselves struggling to continue to fund their work, and to prove to prospective students their continued relevance.

Their Islam versus Our Islam: Hasan Kamaal deplores Talibani Islam

Their Islam versus Our Islam: Hasan Kamaal deplores Talibani Islam
By Hasan Kamaal
These Taliban militants had been trained in the madrasas of the militant camps settled in Pakistan. In the initial days, the followers of Taliban were really very simple and of perfect Islamic character. Actually, the way they had fought against the Russian aggression, the second greatest military power of the world at that time, was really commendable. That’s now part of history. At that time, the U.S had patted their back, appreciated their “Jihad” whole-heartedly and provided the Mujahedeen all sorts of military and financial help.

Distinguished Pakistani scholar and columnist Pervez Hoodbhoy, in an article, “The Saudi-isation of Pakistan”, published in the latest issue of Newsline, laments how radical Islamism and mullah-driven Arabisation are furiously gnawing at the innards of a tottering Pakistani state. He says although the Government admits to the existence of only 13,000 madrasas with 1.5 million Taliban, the real number is likely between 18,000 and 22,000. That would mean millions of Taliban being indoctrinated by hate-mongers for whom Islam means being in a state of constant war with those who refuse to submit to oppressive Islamism that militates against human liberty, equality and dignity.

Don't mess with my madrasa: “A madrasa must not be rich enough to become corrupt”

Don't mess with my madrasa: “A madrasa must not be rich enough to become corrupt”

Maulana Madni cites examples from states like Bihar, West Bengal and MP where many madrasas joined the state madrasa boards. "Unqualified teachers who were more interested in drawing their salaries than teaching subjects like Islamic jurisprudence and Hadees (the Prophet's traditions) have bred a generation of ill-informed maulvis. Now the Centre wants to finish off the madrasas completely," says Maulana Madni who is leading a campaign against the modernisation of the madrasas.
