Delhi encounter: SIMI's real face exposed

Delhi encounter: SIMI's real face exposed

20 Sep 2008

The findings come at a time the Centre is building a strong case in Supreme Court for reversing the order of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal lifting the ban on the group. The tribunal turned down the Centre's plea to extend the ban on SIMI, saying the home ministry had failed to back up its case with evidence. The Centre retorted saying the tribunal had not taken the volumes of evidence put up before it; Friday's encounter should more than strengthen the government's case.

Two faces of SIMI: While an ex-president of SIMI says it has ceased to exist, the Home Ministry links it with LeT, LTTE

Two faces of SIMI: While an ex-president of SIMI says it has ceased to exist, the Home Ministry links it with LeT, LTTE

KRISHNADAS RAJAGOPAL

NEWDELHI, SEPTEMBER 14

Probe agencies say Indian Mujahideen, reported to be behind the blasts in Delhi, is a front for SIMI. The author of the first description about SIMI, Shahid Badar, the organisation's president during the first ban in September 2001, stated on oath before the Tribunal that “SIMI has ceased to exist after the first ban”. “SIMI does not endure any illegal or violent activities and has issued strong press statements condemning illegal and violent activities,” the organisation says in its affidavit. But the Home Ministry's take on the SIMI has achieved the fourth ban for the latter in the Supreme Court, followed with an extension till October.

India: Rendezvous with SIMI

India: Rendezvous with SIMI

Jyoti Punwani

10 Aug 2008,

The cocky youngster who made this audacious comment laughs embarrassedly now at the memory. He left SIMI soon after it plastered the walls of Mumbai's Muslim areas with the infamous poster, 'Waiting for Ghaznavi' which had as a backdrop the Babri Masjid's domes dripping blood. This was to mark December 6, 2000. Why Ghaznavi, I'd asked him. "These have been printed by the central leadership, I can't understand why," he had replied, obviously ill at ease.

How SIMI goes about recruiting cadres

How SIMI goes about recruiting cadres

By Vicky Nanjappa in Bengaluru

The police say the best way to tackle SIMI is by cracking down on its financial network. Superintendent of Police, Belgaum district, Hemant Nimbalkar, says they are investigating into the source of funds behind the outfit. IB sources say a major chunk of SIMI's funding, which runs into nearly Rs 50 lakh a month, comes in from overseas.
