"The myth about Muslim women not studying is being shattered," remarked a ministry official. As the Sachar Committee report had noted: "There is also a common belief that Muslim parents feel that education is not important for girls and that it may instil a wrong set of values. Even if girls are enrolled, they are withdrawn at an early age to marry them off. This leads to a higher dropout rate among Muslim girls."

A recent survey of Pakistani and Bangladeshi women aged up to 35 by the commission found that they had the same aspirations as their non-Muslim counterparts - to balance a career with having a family - and that their families largely supported them in realising those goals.

Rajkumari, a Hindu lady said: “On festivals like Raksha Bandhan and Holi, Muslim women join us and on Eid we participate in their happiness which strengthens the bond between the two communities.” Dr Rohiyeh, a member of the Bahai community, said that the Bahai community also joined hands with their Muslim brothers to mark the day by going to their friends’ houses. The Inter-religious Peace Council, an association consisting of members of all religions in the country, organised an Eid Milan Party. The party was attended by people from all religions, who work together for mutual harmony and peace. ali usman
