Babri Masjid: Opportunity for Muslims

A group of young college students planned to commemorate the second anniversary of the demolition of the Babri mosque on December 6, 1992 by going to the site in Ayodhya and holding prayers. But the Babri Masjid Action Committee and the Muslim personal Law Board as well as the Imams of Delhi’s Jama Masjid very wisely declined to take the path of agitation. I hope they would go further, rethink the entire Muslim agenda and decide to follow the Islamic principles of generosity in settling the Babri Masjid dispute once and for all.

The Supreme Court’s judgement on the Presidential reference was widely acclaimed. But few people realise what it has actually meant for the Muslims. It has given them the greatest stake in the Indian democracy, a stake they appeared to have lost with the infamous demolition of the mosque in full view of the world. But it has also brought them to the crossroads.

Would they strengthen their stake in the system, reinvest their trust in Indian democracy or squander the tremendous opportunity gifted to them quite miraculously? These are some of the weighty questions facing them. On their answer to these questions will depend their fate for years to come.

A very thin line divides an opportunity and a disaster. In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling to return the Presidential reference on the Ayodhya issue. Things are said to have gone back to square one. Which presumably means, we will once again witness the futile course of dialogue between the Muslim leaders and the Hindu sadhus and sants.

Outsourcing of Religion

We adopted the practice of outsourcing of religion 14 centuries ago, something that all other religions used to follow before us and Islam had come to finish off. Allah may have His own verdict on the demolition of a 464 year old deserted Mosque. But the so-called Muslim leaders immediately became hysterical after the launching of ramjanamsthan movement by the divisive, fascist forces in the country. They created a ruckus (hangama) by abandoning the lawful course and spreading a fuss by creating a Babri Masjid Action committee. They should have known that what they were doing was against the dictates of Islam and the Will of Allah. But they had made a mutual friendship society with the devious politicians of the country.

The Babri masjid demolition episode is inextricably linked with the Supreme Court judgment in the famous Shah Bano case. I sometimes wonder about the whole drama that started when the Supreme Court ordered her lawyer husband to pay a petty amount as alimony to a divorced Shah Bano, a woman in her Seventies, with no source of income. How many Mullahs, who claim to be the sole arbiters of Islam and Muslims in this country, had appreciated the Human Rights aspects of the judgment, notwithstanding the fact that giving this right to a woman was the duty of the Muslims themselves?
