Why Islamic Exceptionalism Does not Serve the Muslim Cause

By Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

30 March 2021

Soon after Samuel Paty incident in France, something similar is happening in the UK. A school teacher, in a Religious Education class, decided to show the cartoons of prophet Muhammad. The incident has led to protests from Muslim parents, who mobilized other Muslims, gheraoed the school and are now demanding the dismissal of the teacher. In the wake of these protests, the Batley Grammar School has suspended the teacher, instituted an enquiry and even apologized to Muslim parents. While such Muslim outrage and mobilization led to the murder of Samuel Paty; in this case fortunately it has not come to such a pass. The teacher is currently in hiding and in police protection. But just like in France, Muslims in the UK are accusing schools of deliberate Islamophobia and being insensitive to their religious feelings. The underlying issues therefore, in both France and UK are the same: the Muslim community seems to be arguing from the position of being the victim but at the same time demanding a special and privileged treatment of their religion. In both places, there is a renewed focus about the place of Islam in modern democracies. And there is a wider concern about liberal democracy and how Islamic exceptionalism is in the process of whittling that away.

If the Muslim (or any other) mob gets the power to define what is taught in schools and how teachers should conduct themselves in class, then it is perhaps time to write the epitaph of liberal schooling itself.Muslims have argued against the use of such materials in class. But then, if one is teaching about blasphemy and free speech, one of the most important materials to do so would be the cartoons which have generated so much debate and violence worldwide. And in that sense, the use of such cartoons is legitimate and there is nothing wrong in what the concerned teacher did. Teachers often use challenging materials in lessons to explore ideas and provoke discussion amongst students. The freedom to use certain materials should always be with the teacher and should never be dictated from outside. But then, some Muslims, who might not even know the basics of the craft of teaching, become super charged and think it is within their domain to tell schools and teachers what should be taught and what should be avoided.

If such things cannot be discussed in a classroom, then where else can they be discussed? The boundaries of free speech cannot be circumscribed by the normative demands of a particular religion, in this case the Islamic blasphemy taboo. Moreover, if there is such reverence for one religion, then why should the sensitivities of other religions not be taken into account? And if there is an agreement that religious sensitivities should not be hurt at all, then what happens to the promise of liberal education? Because surely, even teaching evolution and heliocentrism is against the tenets of most religions.

One can certainly argue that the whole issue should have been handled sensitively. Those students who do not want to see such cartoons must be given the option of not being part of such a pedagogical exercise. But it goes without saying that teachers must have the freedom to explore hot button issues and enable students to think critically about them. Not doing so would amount to a religious veto over children’s mind. If this religious veto continues, then centuries of intellectual progress will be negated. There was a time when Christianity had this veto and now it is increasingly looking like Islam is exercising that veto even though it is no where as powerful as the Church once was. Muslims need to think if, in the name of ‘protecting’ their religion, they want their children to become unfit in negotiating the structures of modernity.

Parents can certainly protest about the content of education but then there are appropriate forums to do so. They cannot march on the school and force the school to suspend a teacher, which is what happened in this case. The response of the school in this case has been timid, to say the least. Instead of fronting this as an attack of the freedom of a teacher, it has miserably succumbed to the Islamist mob. Similar incidents have taught us that appeasing the fanatics only emboldens them. The only way to fight such tendencies is to call out this act of religious bullying and confront them. If the primary concern of the school is the feeling of the protestors, then certainly its priorities are misplaced. The real issue should have been the intimidation of the teacher rather than posing super sensitive to fanatical Muslims in order to be politically correct. If the school has withdrawn the lesson altogether, as appears to be the case, then it has already lost the right to be called as a center of learning.

Those who are siding with the protestors in the name of combating Islamophobia and showing sensitiveness towards such Muslims are making a grave error of judgment. Such actions will only fuel a climate of censorship and exceptionalism around Islam which certainly does not do any favour to ordinary Muslims. It is rather patronizing to assume that all Muslims will take offense over the use of cartoons, no matter how insensitive they might be. It is gross to assume that such protestors are the representatives of Muslim community. And playing along any such assumption would only amount to strengthening the unhealthy stereotypes about Muslims. Mollycoddling to such protestors is nothing but trying to appease the most fanatical section within the Muslim community. The incident is perhaps the clearest example of how the school and the left-wing eco-system is privileging orthodox Muslims over the moderate ones.

It is heartening to note that some Muslimshave protested against this caricaturing of their community by the school. They have condemned the protestors who are demanding the sacking of the school teacher and have argued that as Muslims, they have nothing against the particular teacher. The school will do itself and others a favour if it listens to such saner voices within the community.

Pakistani Urdu Journalism: Columns That Spew Absurdities Like 'India Has Occupied Uttar Pradesh and RAW Has Relations with ISIS'

By New Age Islam Special Correspondent

29 March 2021

Pakistani Urdu newspapers publish dozens of columns every day. These columns are written on a wide range of topics but one thing is common in all the columns. They are written impromptu without any proper research. The so-called columnists write even on the topics they do not have any specialisation in. The result is that they spread misinformation and mislead the Pakistani Urdu newspaper readers.

Another common feature of these columns is that while writing on Pakistan's political issues or on terrorism, they hold India responsible for every issue facing Pakistan. These columnists are so afraid of Taliban that they do not mention its name. Taliban, Sipah-e-Sahaba, Lashkar-e-Taiba and terrorists like Masood Azhar, Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi and others are never mentioned in Urdu newspaper reports or columns.

One such columnist is Sikander Khan Baloch. In his column published on Monday (29 March 2021) he writes about India-China conflict, terrorism and Kashmir and holds India responsible for all the problems in the region. But while doing so he exposes his paranoia about India and his poor knowledge of the geography and history of India and of South Asia. His column opens with this observation:

"Unfortunately, India is a country that does not allow its neighbours to live in peace. According to his research, India interferes with the internal affairs of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China. However, he does not give details of the internal affairs of these countries in which India has interfered.

The Alexander of Pakistani investigative journalism writes:

"India has forcefully annexed China's Ladakh and some parts of Uttar Pradesh". He does not know that Uttar Pradesh is located at the heart of India and there is no dispute on its being part of India.

He gives another piece of valuable information that China has occupied 3400 sq. KM of India's territory.

While the world knows that Pakistan is the country that hosts a number of terrorist organisations like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and terrorists like Hafiz Sayeed, Masood Azhar, Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi, Tahawwur Rana and others, the columnist Sikander Khan Baloch writes:

"India has adopted terrorism as part of state policy and Pakistani is its main target. The most gullible country for India is Afghanistan where it spreads terrorism. India has taken Afghanistan into confidence and invested more than 3 billion dollars there. In return India has opened 16 consulates along Pakistan border. These consulates are nurseries of terrorism where Pakistani youth from Balochistan and FATA are lured with money and given training in terrorist activities and provided weapons. After that they are sent to FATA and Balochistan for terrorist activities.

Sikander Baloch also writes:

"RAW is hand in glove with the ISIS."

The entire column is filled with absurdities and false information. The Alexander of Pakistani journalism, Sikander Khan Baloch unfortunately belongs to the Baloch community which has been suffering at the hand of Pakistan's government and army. His people are victimised on a regular basis. The Baloch nationalist Akbar Bugti was killed by Pakistan army. Thousands of Baloch leaders and activists have been kidnapped and murdered by the Pakistan's government agencies and army. The people of Balochistan have been a victim of exploitation. Many Baloch activists have been compelled to leave Pakistan and seek asylum in Canada and other European countries. But this Baloch is a blot on the Baloch community who chooses to turn a blind eye to the sufferings of his community at the hand of Pakistani deep state because he knows that the day he writes about the forced disappearances of Baloch people, false terror charges against Baloch youth and unemployment and poverty of Baloch cimmunity due to the injustice and exploitation by Pakistan government, he would not be able to enjoy the luxury of writing columns in Pakistan.

This Alexander of Pakistani journalism perhaps does not (because of his poor knowldge of world affairs) that Pakistan is in the Grey List of FATF only due to its involvement in and patronage of terrorism. Pakistan has sentenced its own citizen Hafiz Sayeed to 35 years of imprisonment for his involvement in terrorist cases and a Pakistani court has issued arrest warrant against another Pakistani terrorist Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi. Pakistan government has acknowledged that Jamatud Dawa complex at Muridke is a terrorist camp.

Pakistai Urdu newspapers, however, will continue to give these ignoramuses space because they have to sell anti-India sentiments and because they cannot write on Taliban, Al Qaida, Sipah-e-Sahaba, Lashkar-e-Taiba and their terrorist leaders. They can not also write on the drug mafia that has infested all the departments of Pakistan's polity. They can not even write on the extremism that is being promoted in the religious educational system of Pakistan.

Therefore, to fill the pages of their newspapers, they will continue to publish such misleading and absurd columns. After all bread and butter comes first.

How Does Islam View The Institution Of Marriage? Do Husbands And Wives Enjoy Equal Status In Islam?

By Arman Neyazi, New Age Islam

29 March 2021

The husband-wife relationship is said to carry divine blessings with it. This is a relationship which weathers all seasons, no matter how harsh and keeps going on a journey of ultimate worldly love and affection, seldom spoken but always understood by the two concerned. It is a journey of trust and faith. This relationship cannot be strengthened by the words of agreement on a paper that is Nikahnama, unless it has divine blessings, which in most cases it has.

Thus goes a Hadees reported by Abu Hurairah (RA)

“Be kind to women, for they were created from a rib.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Above mentioned Hadees is in the background of the adage that says; Marriages are settled in Heaven, but celebrated on earth; the unity of two unknown souls is written right from birth.  And in local parlance, ' husbands and wives are the two wheels of a vehicle'.

The Institution Of Marriage Needs To Be Strengthened

To strengthen the institution of marriage society will have to play a positive role and be equal to both husband and wife and create a sense of trust and a feeling of being ‘made for each other’. In order to strengthen its ties through Nikahnamas and lengthy responsibilities to both the parties the society has unknowingly tried to make, both (husband and wife), understand that none of the two have to be believed by each other on the face of it. The worldly rules and regulations create confusion and doubts in the loving mind and make them believe that they are not bound by love, respect and trust but doubts and unfaithfulness.

This has not worked and will not work. Two people living together in a business-like manner or like  robots, without any sense of belonging, longing, love and trust towards each other have to decide one day on 'enough is enough' syndrome. Deeds work in businesses where one has to live with others for eight hours a day, not in a lifelong relationship.

To save the institution of marriage and make it fruitful for the husbands and wives and the generations to come, the heads of all the religious and social institutions will have to think and bring revolutionary changes in their approach towards the institution of marriage. It is better if this institution is understood and made all concerned understand the religious approach to a family, which ultimately transforms into a society and lastly, the world.

As far as Islam goes, the holy Quran says:

‘And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.’ (Quran 30:21)

The above mentioned Ayat says, Allah has created mate from among ourselves to find peace, love and tranquillity in each other's companionship.  Husbands and wives are the first cog of the society, which if wishes to remain peaceful and full of love and respect, has to practice kindness and mercy towards the institution of marriage by granting peaceful environment to the husband-wife relationship that at present is mired in controversies doubts and confusions of all kinds.

As far as the position of a wife in the eyes of Islam is concerned, let us reflect on the following Hadees:

“My brother Jibraeel has informed me and emphasized so much respect for women that I thought a husband does not have the rights to even utter ‘Ugh’ to her.” Mustadrak al-Wasaael, vol. 14, p. 252

No sane mind can say that a wife is not granted an equal place, if not higher, in the institution of marriage by Islam. It is the misunderstanding of the religions that has created controversies and has complicated and polluted this very pious relationship.

After the above mentioned Hadees which asks husbands for a high degree of tolerance towards wives, even if there is any mistake from their side, we should consider the following Hadees and understand how much this  institution of marriage has been kept on equal footing by Islam.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet said, “If I were to order anyone to prostrate himself before another, I would have ordered a woman to prostrate herself before her husband.” [At-Tirmidhi]

(There are similar Ahadees and on the basis of all of them some scholars have taken it to be Sahih, whereas some others take it as a weak Hadees. Tirmidhi has quoted the above mentioned Hadees in his Sunan but has qualified it as a weak Hadees.)

If this Hadees is Sahih, just consider how much equality has been brought in the relationship of a husband and a wife. Husbands are not given a right to even utter the sigh “Uff” on a mistake committed by a wife and on the other place a husband has the position of being prostrated, if allowed for a human being.

Islam has tried to strengthen the institution of marriage by giving equal place to both husband and wife and has left no place for any of them to lose trust.

The Quran and the Hadees are not difficult to understand if the intellect is not complicated and polluted with the wishes of earthly gains.

And Allah knows the best.

Turkey's Withdrawal from Istanbul Convention on Violence Against Women A Worrying Step Backwards

By New Age Islam Special Correspondent

29 March 2021

In a move that has delivered a severe blow to the human rights of women in Turkey, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Turkey's withdrawal from the historic Istanbul Convention on crimes against women through a Presidential decree on 21 March 2021. This has sparked large scale protests by the women of the country who believe that this withdrawal will undermine their fight for gender justice and to prevent crimes against women. Rights activists, lawyers and liberal opposition leaders have condemned Erdogan's move. They said that Erdogan cannot take the country out of an international treaty that was ratified by Parliament. UN experts on Human Rights tweeted that Turkey's withdrawal from Istanbul Convention 'is a pushback against women's rights and a very worrying step backwards'.

The Convention had sought to criminalise offences such as psychological violence, sexual violence, forced marriage, Female Genital Mutilation, forced marriage, forced sterilisation, sexual harassment and honour killing.

The Article 4 of the Treaty says:

"The implementation of the provisions of this Convention by the Parties in particular measure to protect the right of victims shall be secured without discrimination on any ground such as sex, gender, race, colour, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, associatiin with a national minority, property, birth, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, migrant or refugee status or other status."

The Convention had come into effect in 2014 and Erdogan had praised the participation of his country in the Convention by saying that Turkey had taken the lead in the fight for gender equality. But after 7 years, his political compulsions and Islamist ambitions have forced him to change his outlook. Hence Turkey's withdrawal. Erdogan's spokesperson Ferhettin Altun defended Erdogan's decision saying that under the guise of fighting for the rights of women 'a group of people was attempting to normalise homosexuality which was not compatible with Turkey's social and family values.

But is it the only reason for Erdogan's withdrawal from the Convention? A closer look at the provisions of the convention makes it clear that anti-LGBT stand was only a facade behind the real motive of protecting the tribal custom of honour killing, FGM, and forced marriage in the name of protecting family values of Turkey and political agenda of the suppression of Kurdish minority under pressure from the conservative leaders in his own AKP and his allies in the National Movement Party.

Of late there has been pressure from his allies to ban the pro-Kurd political party HDP. On 17 March the Turkish Prosecutor asked the Constitutional Court to ban the HDP and dissolve the party in Parliament. Erdogan had earlier claimed that the HDP was a political front of the banned Kurd militants. That the withdrawal decree came only 4 days later speaks about the main motive behind the withdrawal. The Convention is an obstacle in this way as the Convention asks the signatory countries to protect its minority communities and their social and political rights.

Honour killing is a major social evil plaguing the country. This evil does not have any basis in Islam but is rooted in the tribal cultural mores of the Turkish society. After joining the Istanbul Convention, Turkey had strengthened punishment for honour crimes. This was a severe blow to the patriarchal society of Turkey and there was a constant pressure on the government to ease the punishments for honour crimes. In Turkey, thousands of women are killed every year by their close relatives in the name of honour.

The National Assembly of Turkey had published statistics on crimes against women. According to this official report, 1091 women had been killed for honour between 2000- 2005. In many cases deaths or murders were registered as accidents or suicides.

Many girls are killed because they oppose marriage with a boy she do not like. 29% girls or women were killed for honour, 29% were killed due to disagreement within the family, 15% were killed due to extramarital affair and 9% were killed due to sexual harassment.

These statistics showed the severity of crimes against women in Turkey. But instead of trying to launch programmes to bring about social reform and change in the general outlook of the society towards women's issues, Erdogan withdrew from Istanbul Convention to appease the allies.

The UN independent experts and social rapporteurs have urged Erdogan to reconsider its decision and engage in dialogue on tge issue on regional and international level. But the AKP has hinted that instead of staying in the Istanbul Convention, the government will bring about judicial reforms to address crimes against women and will bring an Ankara Declaration for the purpose.

In short, behind his withdrawal from Istanbul Declaration, Erdogan's narrow Islamist ambitions and weakening political base is responsible. To garner support of the conservative political forces he has succumbed to their demands. This will only further jeopardize the women and the minorities in Turkey.

From a conservative dress to becoming a global fashion statement, Burqas have come a long way

By S. Arshad, New Age Islam

29 March 2021

Even a decade or two ago, burqas were a black loose robe worn by married or elderly women as a sign of modesty. Wearing such a burqa was sort of a religious duty of Muslim women. There was no aesthetic sense or sense of beauty attached to it.

However, it has changed in India now. Burqas have become a global fashion statement after having gone a major makeover. Now designer burqas in many colours and designs have not only changed the way men look at burqa but also the way women look at them. Burqas are now available in many designs and styles like umbrella cut, fish cut, straight fit, waist-coat style, tight fitting with intricate work in sleeves or with leather patch work.

Because of their beauty and stylishness, burqas have now become a part of a Muslim woman's daily clothing. Women have different kind of burqas for different occasion. There are partywear burqas kept only for parties while heavy embroidered burqas to be worn in weddings. Simple and lighter burqas are meant for daily use like shopping, colleges or schools or to offices.

In Dubai, annual burqa ramp walk is also held. Dubai has become a major exporter of designer burqas.

Earlier burqas were worn only by married and older women and young girls would avoid burqas but thanks to the aesthetic appeal of the modern designer burqas, young girls are attracted to them and have started wearing burqas to schools and shopping. It also gives them a sense of security.

Thanks to the growing trend of burqa wearing among all age groups of women, the sales of burqas have gone up. Now women buy designer burqas along with their regular garments for Eid. The sale of burqas goes up by 30 to 50% during Ramadhan.

The burqas have also become a security shield for women in an age when mobile phones with sophisticated cameras have become a part of every man's personal accessories. It has increased the chances of women being video graphed or clicked by rogue men on the street. One reason for young girls and women going for is the protection it gives them from these rogue elements. Since non-Muslim women and girls don't wear burqa, they use scarf to cover their face. It protects them both from prying eyes and rogue cameras.

Now that burqas have become a global fashion statement, they may no longer be considered 'a sign of subservience' and 'debasement of women' as French President Nocholas Sarkozy had described it in 2006.

Hefazat-e-Islam Protests Against Visiting Prime Minister Modi Turns Into a National Crisis for Bangladesh

By New Age Islam Special Correspondent

27 March 2021

Hardline religious group of Bangladesh, Hefazat-e-Islam with the support of other religious and political organisations on Friday held a protest meeting against the arrival of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Dhaka as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the freedom of Bangladesh and the centenary celebrations of the birth of the architect of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The protests turned violent and the protesters clashed with the police and the volunteers and Student Wing of Awami League. Similar protests were held in Chatgram and Brahmanbadiya. 5 protesters were killed due to firing by the police. Dozens were injured. The police have rounded up dozens of students associated with Hefazat.

Students and youth have also reportedly vandalised a police station and a railway station.

Today, on Saturday, Hefazat held protests in Dhaka to condemn the police attack on protesters and demanded investigation into the killing and punishment to the police personnel found guilty. They also demanded compensation to the kin of the dead.

The Hefazat-e-Islam has announced a strike on Sunday in protest of the police action. Hefazat leader Junaid Babunagari has threatened to launch continuous protests if the government tried to suppress the strike.

The violence and the deaths that followed the protests have turned the celebrations into a crisis. The situation may aggravate further if the government uses force to disturb the strike on Sunday.

---------

On Saturday, a number of representatives of religious and cultural organisations participated in the protest meeting at the National Press Club in Dhaka. Mr Zafarullah Choudhury, the founder of Ganaswastha Kendra was the most critical of the Hasina government. Addressing her he said, "You are forcing the people of our country to greet the man-eater, the beast the most communal person Narendra Modi. Hefazat-e-Islam whom you tried to silence by trying to bribe them has come forward in protest against Modi.

General Secretary of the Bangladesh Biplabi Party, said that by creating a curfew like situation, Hasina government has turned the national celebration into only a celebration of Modi and the government.

The Convenor of the Ganasamhati Andolan Junaid Saki said, "Communalism is a curse that divides citizens. We have witnessed this how India is burning due to communalism. Now this is coming to Bangladesh. We are protesting the communal forces like BJP that spreads communalism and hatred in India.

Another speaker Nurul Haque Nur said, "We condemn Sheikh Hasina government's actions. They have accepted the servitude of the Indian imperialism and to appease Narendra Modi whose party BJP attacked mosques and slaughtered Muslims in India, attacked the protesters."

However, the General Secretary of the ruling party Awami League, Obaidul Qadir held BNP responsible for the violence and deaths. He said, "Hefazat indulged in violence on Friday to sabotage the Golden Jubillee Celebrations of Independence with the support of the BNP because the success of the celebrations has caused heartburn to them"

However, going by the mood of the general public, Hefazat-e-Islam which has always tried to exploit religious issues to prove itself the champions of Islam and the Muslims, used the anti-Modi sentiments to create anti-Hasina mood in the country. Last year, it had staged similar protests against French Prime Minister Macron after he had made 'Islam in crisis' remark. Moreover, it had also opposed Hasina government's decision to install statues of Mujibur Rahman in Dhaka and other parts of the country as part of the celebrations.

To appease them, Hasina government had recognised the certificates of the Qaumi madrasas. Under their pressure, Hasina government passed Digital Security Act which is used for blasphemy cases against activists.

Still the Hefazat loses no opportunity to put the Hasina government on the back foot.

The invitation of the Hasina

Government to PM Modi to join the Golden Jubilee celebrations provided the Hefazat with another golden opportunity to prove Sheikh Hasina the enemy of Islam and Muslims.

The death of five youth has definitely turned the popular sentiments against Hasina government.

But at the same time the Hefazat also cannot be absolved of the responsibility for the violence and deaths on a diplomatic issue. Hasina government had every right to invite the head of a neighbouring country in the national celebrations. Hefazat may not like the invitee and had the right to protest peacefully and make its opinion known to India and to the Hasina government. According to Islamic principles, a momin has to obey the Ulil Amr, the decisions of the democratically elected government. Indulging in violence leading to deaths comes under the definition of fasad according to the Quran.

PM Modi is in Bangladesh on a two day diplomatic visit. India being a major political and military power in Asia may hold special importance for Bangladesh and so the government of Bangladesh may seek India's co-operation in economic and defence matters. In the past, India has helped Bangladesh in fighting terrorism. Therefore, Hasina government's inviting India's Prime Minister should have been seen from political and diplomatic point of view. By turning it into a national crisis Hefazat is  furthering Pakistan's agenda of destabilising Bangladesh as friendship of Bangladesh with India is not in the interests of Pakistan.
