The Liberhan report on Babri Masjid demolition: No point in revisiting the past

Let us Focus on the Future

By A.M. Jamsheed Basha

Whether Advani, Uma And Murali Manohar Joshi Would Be Indicted? Minorities Wait with Anxiety.

A period as long as 17 years was just sufficient enough for Justice Liberhan to submit the Liberhan Commission Report to the PM on 30.6.2009. The contents were not made known, but the timing of the report has sent chills into the nerves of the BJP leadership, who are taking stock of the situation in an emergency meet in the Capital.

Why it took so long for the Liberhan Commission to compile the report remains a mystery as much as the demolition of the Babri Masjid itself a bigger mystery.

The bigger question arises, whether Mr. L K Advani would be indicted or not? According to information available that the Commission held hundreds of hearings but there were no direct evidence produced against Advani during the entire 17 years of tenure of the commission. It has been left entirely on judge's discretion to interpret the sequence of event, quotes, speeches and interviews of Advani and other co-accused and their public actions to 'judge' their actual role behind the demolition of mosque. The minorities will wait with anxiety till the contents were made public.

Kamal Farooqui, a member of the Babri Masjid Action Committee, says, "If the commission gives a clean chit to Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti over their role in demolition then the report will lose its credibility. We are not so forgetful. All of us have seen what happened in Ayodhya -- right on the site -- for a full three days. How tension was built up, how people were bought and how the leaders rejoiced when the mosque turned into dust."
