Al-Azhar deputy rejects call for women to remove their headscarves

A senior official at Al-Azhar, Egypt’s highest Sunni Islamic institution, on Monday took a swipe at a recent call for Muslim women to take off their veil, stressing that the head cover is a religious must for female Muslims once they reach puberty.
Abbas Shouman, deputy to Egypt's Grand Imam, made the comments, after writer Cherif Choubachy recently called on his Facebook page for veiled women to take off their headscarves at a rally he proposed to be held in Cairo’s Tahrir Square in early May.
Choubachy argues that the headscarf, which is common in Muslim countries, re-appeared in Egypt in the early 1970s after it had all but disappeared for 50 years, following rhetoric at the time that Egypt had lost the 1967 war against Israel because people had strayed from Islamic teachings.
“It’s unacceptable for anyone to ask a woman to quit praying, fasting,” or any other Islamic tenet, Shouman said, calling Choubachy's comments "an encroachment on women's freedoms".

Iraqi Air Strikes Kill Dozens of ISIL Terrorists

At least 100 terrorists of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group were killed in Iraqi air strikes on their positions in al-Dujail town in Salahuddin province on Tuesday.
Iraqi air strikes targeted ISIL positions in Southwestern al-Dujail town, killing over 100 terrorists, a security source said.
The ISIL Takfiri terrorists currently control shrinking swathes of Syria and Iraq. They have threatened all communities, including Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians, Ezadi Kurds and others, as they continue their atrocities in Iraq.
Senior Iraqi officials have blamed Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and some Persian Gulf Arab states for the growing terrorism in their country.
The ISIL has links with Saudi intelligence and is believed to be indirectly supported by the Israeli regime.

ISIS behead man over alleged blasphemy in Syria

New photographs emerged from Syria on Monday which purportedly shows the latest atrocity the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group.
The ISIS militants are shown beheading a man who was accused of blasphemy in the latest set of the gruesome photographs.
The man was reportedly beheaded in Hama in Syria by a masked executioner surrounded by several ISIS militants armed with guns.
A heavy meat chopper was used to behead the victim who was blindfolded and forced to kneel on the floor.
In one of the photographs, an ISIS militant is seen to read a paper – apparently a ruling by the terrorist group before the victim was beheaded.
The severed head of the victim is seen placed on his body in another photograph with each of the images similar to videos released of the foreign hostages beheaded by the terrorist group.
The photographs were released shortly after the group released a propaganda video threatening a 9/11-type attack on United States.
SIS calls on supporters to attack the US on its own soil in the latest video is 11 minute long and titled “We will Burn America”.
Featuring several mass beheading including the execution of of U.S. journalist James Foley and the horrific burning of Jordanian pilot Muadh al-Kasasbeh, the video claims the US citizens’ sense of safety is a “mirage”.

Car Bombs Kill Eight, Injures 23 In Baghdad Area

Car bombs in the Baghdad area, including one near a hospital, killed at least eight people on Tuesday, security and medical officials said.
One blast hit a car park across the street from Yarmouk hospital in the west of the Iraqi capital, killing at least four people and wounding 10.
The second struck a residential area in Mahmudiyah, south of Baghdad, killing at least four people and wounding at least 13.
Bombings and shootings in the capital were once a daily occurrence, but have declined since the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group spearheaded a sweeping offensive last June and overran large areas north and west of the city.
That has tied them down in fighting outside the capital that distracts from their ability to carry out attacks against civilians in Baghdad.
Iraqi security forces and allied paramilitaries have regained significant territory from ISIS in recent months, with backing from a U.S.-led coalition carrying out air strikes and training, as well as from Iran.
But large parts of two provinces -- Nineveh in the north and Anbar in the west -- remain under ISIS control.
On Monday seven people were killed and 31 wounded in a car bomb blast in Baghdad’s western neighbourhood of Bayaa, a police colonel said.
Another two people were killed the same day by a roadside bomb in Taji, just north of the capital, he said.

Iraqi Artist Puts 'Yazidi Genocide' By ISIS To Canvas

Dohuk: A jihadist fighter slits a man`s throat, another brandishes a severed head spiked on his rifle while more militants dump bodies into a trench overflowing with corpses.
This is how painter Ammar Salim depicts the massacres the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group perpetrated against his Yazidi minority in northern Iraq last summer.
In his tiny apartment in the city of Dohuk in Iraq`s Kurdish region, Salim has attempted to put the collective memories of his community to canvas in a series entitled "The Yazidi Genocide".
This particular piece, his most recent, includes more than 100 characters and was inspired by mass graves found in the Sinjar area.
"Most people fight through weapons, writing, or the press. I said I`d fight through art," Salim says. "I want people to see what they haven`t seen."
The paintings, including many crowded and colourful scenes reminiscent of Renaissance depictions of hell, are intentionally shocking.

UAE shoppers continue to buy fake goods despite ‘terrorism link’

ABU DHABI // Shoppers looking for deals on fake goods have said they would continue to buy the products – despite a warning that some proceeds may be used to fund terrorism and organised crime.
Organised crime and terrorist groups are using illegal trade to launder money, Judge Jamal Al Sumaiti, director of the Dubai Judicial Institute, had said during a judicial workshop in Dubai on Monday. He urged the public not to purchase these goods, calling the problem a worldwide issue.
But as he was shopping in Al Danah area in Abu Dhabi for a fake watch, P N, 32, an Indian, was sceptical that the warning applied to stores that he visited.
“You can’t accuse these stores,” he said. “Yes, it is counterfeit and that is illegal, but organised crime?
“At the end, the purchaser knows what he is doing and it is his fault for buying that. This is the police’s work.”

KSA slams terror against civilians

The Council of Ministers has welcomed the decision by the Yemeni government to appoint a deputy president, saying it would help restore stability and security in the country.
The Cabinet meeting held at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh on Monday afternoon, chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, issued the statement in the wake of Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi appointing Khaled Bahah as his deputy.
In his statement to the media, Minister of Culture and Information Adel Al-Toraifi said the Cabinet condemned the Houthis for continuing to attack innocent civilians in various cities using heavy artillery and tanks.
Al-Toraifi said the Cabinet also welcomed the decision by leaders of various Yemeni military units and their affiliates to declare their loyalty to Hadi’s administration. This would help all Yemenis, he said.

BAGHDAD: Iraq’s prime minister said Monday his country needs greater support from the international coalition so it can “finish” the Islamic State group.
Haider Al-Abadi said the “marked increase” in airstrikes, weapons deliveries and training has helped roll back the extremist group, but that more is required to eliminate the group once and for all.
“We want to see more,” Al-Abadi told journalists as he boarded a flight to Washington where he will meet with President Barack Obama as part of his first official visit to the US as prime minister.
“We can finish Daesh ...and we can stop their advance in other countries,” he added, using the group’s Arabic acronym. “We are the only country with armed forces on the ground fighting Daesh. We need all the support of the world.”

FBI Accused of Whitewashing Saudi Connections to 9/11 Terrorist Attack

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is facing accusations that it has constantly whitewashed Saudi Arabian connections to the 9/11 terrorist attack in the wake a new update report on the Bureau's investigations, a report said.
Just days offer the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack the FBI began to look into a Saudi family residing in Florida who had fled precipitously — abandoning their luxury home, cars, and valuables — just days before the attacks, the New York Post reported.
But after years of investigation and an initial agent's report citing the family's “many connections” to “individuals associated with the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001,” the new 128-page report from The 9/11 Review Commission dismisses the initial investigation as a dead-end without thorough explanation.
The Review Commission was tasked with assessing the FBI's performance since the original investigation and to examine “any evidence now known to the FBI that was not considered by the 9/11 Commission.” The panel consisted of three members, appointed by FBI Director James Comey.

Twelve years after the execution of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, a report published on a Middle-East news website points to alleged fabrication of details of Hussein’s capture by United States forces.
The report, which has been published on the al-Araby al-Jadeed website, quotes Firas Ahmad, a 41-year-old Iraqi interpreter saying that contrary to US claims of Hussein being captured in a hole, the Iraqi leader was actually discovered in a ‘reinforced underground bunker.’ However, the report adds at the end that the opinions expressed in the article are of the writer himself.

US Vets Return to Mideast to Battle Past and Present Demons

BAGHDAD — A decade after his first Iraq tour, former U.S. Marine Jamie Lane has returned to the battlefields of the Middle East to fight a still unvanquished enemy and wrestle with the demons of his past.
The 29-year old from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan served as a machine gunner from 2004 to 2008, mainly in the western Anbar province, where he saw fierce fighting against al-Qaida in Iraq. Now, as a private citizen suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, he is back in the region to battle its successor, the Islamic State group.
"In order to aid my recovery from PTSD, I have taken it upon myself to fight on my terms, against an enemy I know is evil," said Lane, who joined Kurdish militiamen in Syria. "It is redemption, in a sense."
He is one of a small but growing number of Iraq war veterans who are making their way back to the Middle East, not as uniformed soldiers, but as individuals waging their own personal battles.

Islamic State lost 25-30pc of Iraq territory, says Pentagon

WASHINGTON, April 14 — The Islamic State group has lost control of “25 to 30” per cent of the territory it holds in Iraq after coalition air strikes and an Iraqi offensive, the Pentagon said yesterday.
The radical group took control of large swathes of the north and western parts of the country months ago after an offensive and the collapse of Iraqi military units.
Following months of an air campaign by a US-led coalition and a rallying of Iraqi forces, the Islamic State (IS) grip on parts of the country is fading, the Pentagon claims.
“ISIL is now being slowly pushed back,” said Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren.
“Iraqi security forces and coalition airpower have unquestionably inflicted some damage on ISIL,” he said using another acronym for IS.

Troublemaker Tehran ‘trying to deliver missiles to militants’: WSJ

Pakistan will intensify diplomatic efforts to try to resolve the crisis in Yemen, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Monday, days after his Gulf allies criticized Islamabad for not joining a Saudi-led coalition conducting airstrikes there.
“Pakistan will intensify its diplomatic efforts in the coming days, in consultation with the leadership of Saudi Arabia, to resolve the crisis,” Sharif said in Islamabad, according to AFP.
“We believe that the restoration of President Hadi’s government will be an important step forward toward establishing peace in Yemen.”
He called on Iran to use its influence to help bring the Houthis to the negotiating table.
Meanwhile, an American defense official said that Washington was aware of Tehran’s attempt to deliver the game-changing surface-to-air missiles to the Houthis, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Blackwater guards get heavy sentences in 2007 Iraq killings

A former Blackwater guard was sentenced to life in prison and three others received 30-year sentences Monday for their roles in a 2007 mass shooting in Iraq that left at least 14 civilians dead.
The four ex-employees of the US private security firm were convicted last October on an array of charges ranging from first degree murder to voluntary manslaughter stemming from the incident in Baghdad's Nisour Square.
During a two month-trial in US federal court in Washington, a jury heard how the four defendants opened fire with sniper rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers in the bustling square as they escorted a diplomatic convoy.
A toll compiled by American investigators recorded 14 deaths and 17 injured. Iraqi officials say 17 civilians were killed, and 18 injured in the shooting.

Probe Real Motive Behind Shiv Sena Hate Agenda: All India Ulema Council

Mumbai: Strongly condemning the Saamna article written by Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, Muslim clerics Sunday demanded from the government a probe into the exact motive behind the "hate" and "divisive" agenda of the saffron party.
"It has now become necessary to thoroughly probe the origin of these people, and their exact motive behind issuing hateful and divisive statements", Mehmood Daryabadi, Secretary General of All India Ulema Council said.
In the article published in the latest issue of the Shiv Sena's mouth-piece Saamna, Raut, also a Rajya Sabha member, addressed All India Majlis-E-Ittehad ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Owaisi as "Owaisi bhai from Hyderabad" and said: "As long as Muslim votes are for sale, the community will remain backward and its leaders will become rich."
In the article written in Marathi, he said it was because of this that Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray had said "voting rights for Muslims should be taken away".
"Are they willing to divide the country again? It should be investigated on whose directions they are spewing venom against Muslims and other minorities every now and then", Daryabadi said.

Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday condemned Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut’s demand that Muslims be disenfranchised to end vote-bank politics.
“It is highly objectionable. The country works according to the Constitution, and not by anyone’s statement,” Mr. Nitish Kumar told journalists here. Mr. Lalu Prasad said: “It is a very dangerous trend… Shiv Sena leaders always make such controversial remarks to polarise voters and foment hatred in society.”
However, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said Mr. Raut’s opinion might reflect the Shiv Sena’s perspective, but “every Muslim born in this country considers himself its citizen.”

BERLIN: Against the backdrop of a row over Sanskrit replacing German in government run schools in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India's secularism is not so weak that it will be "shaken" because of a language and there was a need for having "self-confidence".
Addressing a reception for the Indian community here, Modi referred to a time decades ago when German radio used to have news bulletin in Sanskrit.
"In India, there was no news bulletin in Sanskrit at that time because perhaps it was thought that secularism would be endangered," the Prime Minister said.
"India's secularism is not so weak that it will be shaken just because of a language. One should have self-confidence. Self-confidence should not be shaken," he said.
Modi did not elaborate but his veiled comments assume significance as these came months after a row over replacing of German as third language in government-run Kendirya Vidyalaya schools with Sanskrit.

MUMBAI: Even as its demand for disenfranchisement of Muslim community has evoked sharp reactions from political parties, the Shiv Sena on Tuesday sought to know why the issue of voting rights of Kashmiri Pandits has not been raised in the same manner.
"There has been a furore across the country over the voting rights of Muslims. But have these people ever spoken about the voting rights of Kashmiri Pandits? How many Hindus were able to cast their franchise during the Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections? Did any Owaisi or one of his secular supporters speak up for the Kashmiri Pandits?" an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said.
Pointing out that not a single Hindu MLA was elected from the Kashmir Valley, it alleged, "No Hindu was left there who could vote. Only because the people who support Pakistan (separatists) could win there, the voting rights of Hindus were taken away, right? But there is nobody to speak about this."

Aerial Search Operation In Orakzai Agency Leaves Five Suspected Militants Dead

FATA: In an aerial search conducted by security forces in the Shakar Tangi and Safeel Dara areas of central Orakzai Agency five suspected militants were killed while two hideouts were destroyed, Express News reported Tuesday.
According to security personnel, the operation was carried out on the basis of a tip-off, killing five militants belonging to a banned outfit with the help of helicopter gunships.
During the operation, the forces were also successful in destroying two hideouts of the terrorists in the same area.
On March 27, Rangers recovered a cache of weapons packed in gunny bags during a search operation conducted at the Women Training College, Tilak Incline, in Hyderabad.
While the residents confirmed the raid at the College, the law enforcers of the region denied any such search operation.

Encounter In Karachi: Al Qaeda Commanders Among Five Slain

KARACHI: Five alleged militants, including two commanders of the regional branch of al Qaeda, were killed on Monday in an encounter with a law enforcement agency.
According to officials, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) carried out a raid on the basis of a tip-off in the suburban Khairabad area of Karachi’s Orangi Town.
CTD official Raja Omar Khattab said the raid was followed by a gunfight in which the militants used hand grenades and other sophisticated weapons that caused damage to the police’s armoured personnel carrier.
The counterterrorism force later claimed it killed al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) Karachi chapter chief Noorul Hassan alias Hashim alias Bhai Jan alias Babu Bhai, as well as the AQIS deputy commander Usman alias Irfan alias Abdullah.

Punjab govt challenges Lakhvi's release in Supreme Court

LAHORE: In a petition filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the Punjab government has challenged the Lahore High Court's (LHC) release orders for Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, one of the key accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
The petition filed by the Punjab Home Department maintains that there was sufficient evidence against Lakhvi but LHC's Justice Anwarul Haq had ignored it and ordered his release on April 10.
The petition requests that the LHC's decision to release Lakhvi be suspended with the top court permitting to restore his detention under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

WASHINGTON: Pakistan is not facing a zero-sum option in the Yemen conflict, says a senior PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan, while stressing the need for caution in handling this very delicate situation.
“No, it is not a ’you-are-with-us-or-against-us scenario,” he said, when asked at a briefing if not supporting Saudi Arabia would put Pakistan in the enemy camp.
Senator Ahsan, who is in Washington to attend the first meeting of a US-Pakistan parliamentary forum, said that in the Yemen situation, the Pakistani parliament had sent two clear messages: Pakistan will maintain neutrality in any situation where Muslims are fighting Muslims. But if there is a threat to Saudi Arabia or to the two holy cities, then Pakistan may play a more pro-active role.

No end to it: As violence ebbs elsewhere, Balochistan continues to bleed

ISLAMABAD: Since Pakistan put its revised anti-terror policy in place after the Peshawar school massacre, the country has witnessed a dramatic decline in violence in all provinces but one. Balochistan continues to bleed.
More than 112 people, both civilian and servicemen, have lost their lives since December 16, 2014 – a number larger than the collective figure from three other provinces, where 79 people have been killed during the same period, according to statistics gathered by The Express Tribune from provincial home departments.
Last year, 240 people were killed and 1,190 were injured in the province.
A study of the 100-day performance reports prepared by officials assigned to execute the 20-point agenda of the National Action Plan (NAP) suggests the federal government has failed to execute the major points of the much-trumpeted anti-terror plan in Balochistan to wipe out insurgency.

New Militant Outfit Traced In Chittagong, Bangladesh

Police’s elite force Rapid Action Battalion yesterday claimed to have traced a new militant outfit named Shahid Hamza Brigade in the port city, members of which have military training.
Each of its wings comprises seven members – all trained up as “one man army.”
The group started operation in November 2013 by holding a meeting at a hotel near the Foy’s Lake of the port city in a bid to support the tormented Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar, Lt Col Mifta Uddin, commanding officer of RAB 7, told reporters at the battalion’s Chittagong headquarters.
They were planning to launch an armed revolution in greater Chittagong including the Chittagong Hill Tracts to protest against oppression on the Muslims across the world.
The information was gleaned from the four active members of the group, described as suppliers of arms and ammunition, arrested in a 24-hour-long drive since Sunday.
The elite force also found five AK 22 rifles with 10 magazines, five foreign-made pistols with five magazines, a single barrel gun, a light gun, 3668 rounds of different bullets, some smart phone sets, tabs and a motorcycle in their possessions. Documents on techniques to evade arrest and intelligence surveillance were also found.

Three Killed, Another Wounded In Explosion And Taliban Attack In Maidan Wardak

Three civilians have been killed and another wounded in a Taliban attack and explosion in Maidan Wardak province.
A statement issued by Maidan Wardak media office on Tuesday states that three civilians were killed in a landmine explosion in Marak area of Central Bihsud District. According to the statement the deceased aged between 12 to 35 years.
The statement further states that a civilians sustained injuries during a Taliban attack in Tangi area of Sayed Abad District. Izatullah is admitted to the emergency hospital in Kabul, the statement adds.

An armed attack left two people killed during daylight in capital Kabul on on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses say that the victims were driving in a corolla vehicle that came under indiscriminate fire around 09:00 AM near Hazrat Farouq mosque in the 11th police district of Kabul city.
According to eyewitnesses two people were killed in the attack.
Motive behind the attack is unknown. Kabul police have not officially released details of the attack.

Two killed as Bangladesh Islamists protest execution of JI leader

DHAKA: Two student activists have been shot dead in Bangladesh, police said Monday, as the Jamaat-e-Islami party tried to enforce a nationwide strike to protest the execution of a senior leader.
There were also reports of protesters firebombing vehicles around the country as tensions ran high following the execution late Saturday of Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, a leader of the Jamaat.
Police said the body of a 22-year-old student supporter of the party had been found in the western city of Rajshahi on Monday. He had been shot at least five times.
Another student activist died in a hospital on Monday morning after he was shot during clashes between police and protesters in the northwestern district of Sirajganj on Sunday night, the district's deputy police chief Faruq Ahmed told AFP.

Interpol issues red notice against BNP Senior Vice Chairman

The Interpol has issued a "red corner" notice for the arrest of BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman on charge of murder and explosion of hand grenade in the Awami League rally in 2004.
The Interpol list of wanted persons carried Tarique's picture with details about the BNP chief Khaleda Zia's elder son.
Tarique has been in London since September 11, 2008 on medical grounds after securing parole in various cases.
He faces 14 charges, of which four, including the August 21 grenade attack case, are on trial and the rest are stayed. He is also facing a number of arrest warrants in several defamations cases.

Dangerous Liaisons: 70 Malaysians Suspected of Having Ties to ISIL

Police across Malaysia and in the capital Kuala Lumpur in particular tightened security after it was discovered that 70 people, including Malaysian Armed Forces servicemen, have ties with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group.
"I continue to remind my officers to be on alert at all times," Malacca Deputy Police Chief Senior Asst. Comm. Shahrizan Che Mat Din said, as quoted by The Star newspaper on Tuesday.
According to the Malaysian newspaper, security has been particularly tightened at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur.
Last week, 17 people, including two Malaysian Armed Forces personnel were detained by Malaysian security forces on suspicion that they had ties with terrorist groups, particularly ISIL.

Military Chief Challenges IS Militants to Come to Indonesia

Jakarta. The Indonesian Military (TNI) is not at all impressed by threats made by a man claiming to be an Islamic State fighter, to come and free convicted terrorists from the maximum security prison on Nusakambangan island, off Central Java.
“It’s not a problem, let’s wait for them. It’s even better if they do come and not just spew some threats,” TNI chief Gen. Moeldoko said on Tuesday, as quoted by Detik.com. “Let them come and we’ll take them all out, no problem.”
It has been reported that a video posted on YouTube video contained threats to break convicted terrorists Abu Bakar Bashir and Aman Abdurrahman out of prison.
Authorities believe the man in the video could be the Indonesian-born IS militant named Abu Jandal, who previously appeared in a YouTube video uploaded in December, airing threats to the TNI and the National Police’s counterterrorism unit Densus 88.
Police say they are taking the latest video — titled “Salim News alias Abu Jandal” — seriously and have started an investigation, involving also Densus 88 and the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT).

With Pota, new Sedition Act, Malaysia going back to ‘Stone Age’, DAP MP says

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — Malaysia is heading down a slippery slope to the Stone Age with Putrajaya enacting oppressive laws that give its enforcers more power to demand obedience from citizens, DAP MP Charles Santiago said.
The Klang MP cited last week’s passing of the Prevention of Tourism Bill (Pota) and amendments to the Sedition Act as examples, saying once these are gazetted into laws, Malaysians will find themselves living in a country with little or no democratic space.
“Where does this leave us as a nation? Not at crossroads for sure. We have long surpassed that to a slippery slope down to the Stone Age,” he said in a statement.
Pota, a new law that revives preventive detention without trial, was passed without amendment at the Dewan Rakyat at about 2.25am on April 7 after a debate of more than 12 hours.

Indonesian Islamic parties seek alcohol ban

Two Islamic parties have proposed legislation that would ban all consumption of alcoholic drinks and bring jail terms of up to two years for offenders in Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, the Jakarta Post said on Tuesday.
It was not immediately clear how much support there would be for the bill put to parliament, although previous moves to crack down on alcohol consumption have been seen as posturing to appeal to voters before the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
“Under the bill, consuming alcoholic beverages could land a person in jail as it will be treated similarly to drug trafficking,” the daily quoted Muhammad Arwani Thomafi, a member of one of the two parties, as saying.
The bill seeks to ban the sale, production, distribution and consumption of all beverages containing more than one percent of alcohol, according to the national newspaper.
The parties behind the bill and government officials were not immediately available to comment on the report.

Saudi Bombers Strike School in Yemen's Ma'rib, Massacre Dozens

Saudi warplanes struck a school in a Sunni-populated district of Yemen's Ma'rib city, and massacred scores of defenceless students, a local source said.
According to the source, the Saudi fighter jets late on Monday staged massive bombing raids on a Sunni-teaching school in the city of Ma’rib, located about 120 kilometres (74 miles) East of the capital Sana'a.
There has been no report on the exact number of the casualties, but the source said the raids claimed the lives of dozens of schoolgirls.
More than 2265 housing units have been totally destroyed or severely damaged in the Saudi bombing raids across Yemen, a Yemeni military official said.
"Saudi attacks have left over 2265 housing units totally demolished," the Yemeni army Spokesperson Colonel Sharaf Luqman said in a press conference on Monday.
He said that his country will give a crushing response to the Saudi attacks in coming days.
"We advise the Saudi monarchy to stop these airstrikes. Riyadh should await the dire consequences of its aggression," Luqman added.

Iran calls for political solution in Yemen

ASTANA: Iran urged on Monday the formation of a new Yemeni government and offered to assist in a political transition.
The advance by Houthi rebels towards the Yemeni city of Aden forced President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee to Riyadh last month and triggered a Saudi-led campaign of air strikes to try to drive back the rebels.
“I had the privilege of participating in the Bonn Conference when we created the Afghan government. Actually we didn’t do it, the Afghans did ... We can do that in Yemen too,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a speech during a two-day visit to Kazakhstan.

Humanitarian fears grow as strikes, clashes shake Yemen

Aid agencies warned Monday of a growing humanitarian crisis including food shortages in Yemen as Saudi-led warplanes hit rebel positions for a third week and rival forces clashed.

Islam and Education in Ireland, a recent book by Ali Shehata Abdou Selim, and subsequent public debates, illustrate that Islam is something that has arrived in the midst of Irish society.
The publication of Muslims in Ireland: Past and Present (Edinburgh University Press, 2015), by myself and four colleagues, seeks to provide an in-depth knowledge of our growing Muslim population from a balanced and well-informed academic perspective.

Russia lifts ban on missile deliveries to Iran, start oil-for-goods swap

The moves come after world powers, including Russia, reached an interim deal with Iran on curbing its nuclear programme and signal that Moscow may have a head-start in the race to benefit from an eventual lifting of sanctions on Tehran.
The Kremlin said Putin signed a decree lifting Russia’s own ban on the delivery of S-300 anti-missile rocket system to Iran, removing a major irritant between the two after Moscow cancelled a corresponding contract in 2010 under pressure from the West.

'2014 saw militants use of rape, sexual slavery': Ban Ki-moon

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said 2014 was marked by harrowing accounts of rape, sexual slavery and forced marriage being used by militants, including the Islamic State and Boko Haram.
In a report released on Monday, the U.N. chief expressed “grave concern” over sexual violence perpetrated by armed groups, including those promoting extremist ideologies in Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Nigeria, Mali, Libya and Yemen.
“The confluence of crises wrought by violent extremism has revealed a shocking trend of sexual violence employed as a tactic of terror by radical groups,” Mr. Ban said.
The Secretary-General said efforts “to degrade or destroy” the Islamic State group, Boko Haram, al-Shabab, Ansar Dine and al-Qaeda affiliates “are an essential part of the fight against conflict-related sexual violence.”

Azerbaijan supports Saudi-led operation

U.N. to vote on Yemen arms embargo

The U.N. Security Council is due to vote on Tuesday on a resolution to blacklist the son of Yemen's former president and impose an arms embargo on Iranian-backed Houthi militias, diplomats said.
The vote is taking place as fighting escalates between the Houthis and supporters of Yemen’s legitimate President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi, as airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition aims to halt militia advances in the country.
It was unclear how Russia would vote on the draft by council member Jordan and Gulf Arab states. Russia has insisted on an arms embargo on all parties, including Hadi’s government.
The Russian U.N. mission declined to comment to Reuters news agency on Monday on whether it would support the resolution, abstain or veto.
The draft is aimed at ending the Houthis’ attempt to take over the strategic Mideast country.

Geert Wilders Mocks Angela Merkel at German Anti-Islam Rally

DRESDEN, Germany (Reuters) - Far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders attempted on Monday to boost the German anti-Islam movement PEGIDA with a speech that mocked Chancellor Angela Merkel for saying Muslims "belong to Germany", but the demonstration failed to draw huge crowds.
Wilders offered to take Merkel back to the Netherlands with him, provoking chants of "Merkel must go!" from the audience of mostly middle-aged and elderly white men. Some waved flags and held banners saying "Stop the Islamization of Europe!".
"Your chancellor, Frau Merkel, has said Islam belongs to Germany and I ask you, is she right? She's not right," he told the crowd in Dresden that local media estimated at about 10,000 - far short of the 30,000 PEGIDA had announced.

HRW slams Palestinian kids’ abuse on settler farms

JERUSALEM: A rights group on Monday slammed the alleged abuse of Palestinian children working on Israeli settlement farms in the occupied West Bank.
Hundreds of children, some as young as 11, have been working for low wages and in “hazardous” conditions on settler farms in the Israeli-occupied sector of the Jordan Valley, Human Rights Watch said in a 74-page report.
The head of the Jordan Valley’s settler community dismissed the report outright as “lies.” The report, entitled Ripe for Abuse, added that Europe and the US were significant export markets for agricultural produce grown on Israeli settlement farms.
“Israel’s settlements are profiting from rights abuses against Palestinian children,” HRW’s Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson said in a statement.

Nigerian president-elect makes no promises on missing girls

Nigeria's president-elect Muhammadu Buhari cautioned on Tuesday that he could not make promises on the return of 219 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram exactly a year ago.
"We do not know if the Chibok girls can be rescued. Their whereabouts remain unknown. As much as I wish to, I cannot promise that we can find them," he said in a statement.
"But I say to every parent, family member and friend of the children that my government will do everything in its power to bring them home."
Buhari's statement on the first anniversary of the girls' abduction from the northeastern state of Borno on April 14 last year contrasts markedly with that of outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan and his government.

The United Nations Security Council pressed Libya's warring factions to urgently form a unity government and threatened sanctions against those behind spiraling violence.
In a declaration adopted by consensus, the 15 council members urged the parties taking part in peace talks to "agree on arrangements on the formation of a national unity government to end Libya's political, security and institutional crisis."
A meeting attended by political party leaders and activists took place on Monday in Algiers under UN auspices, with participants hoping to reach an accord to end the chaos and violence that has engulfed Libya since the 2011 uprising that toppled dictator Moamer Kadhafi.
"Expressing deep concern about the continuing violence in Libya, the members of the Security Council reaffirmed that there can be no military solution to the crisis in Libya and called on all parties to cease hostilities to create a peaceful and conducive environment for an inclusive dialogue," the statement said.
The council also warned it was "prepared to sanction those who threaten Libya's peace, stability or security or that obstruct or undermine the successful completion of its political transition."

UNICEF: Boko Haram Insurgency Displaces 800,000 Children in N. Nigeria

Some 800,000 children have been displaced in Northeast Nigeria due to Boko Haram's mounting violence, according to UNICEF.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) released a new report, dubbed “Missing Childhoods” on Monday. It dwells on the humanitarian situation in Northeastern Nigeria that is deteriorating alongside the rising violence of Boko Haram Takfiri group, RT reported.
The report estimates that the number of displaced youth stands at about 800,000. They have been made to leave their homes, fleeing to safer regions of Nigeria or neighboring Chad, Niger and Cameroon – in a figure that has more than doubled in just less than a year.
“The abduction of more than 200 girls in Chibok is only one of endless tragedies being replicated on an epic scale across Nigeria and the region,” said Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, in a press release.
